Lampard lost 23 out of 84 in his first spell, then 8 out of 11 after Potter. His first spell was during the Abramovic regime, so his 4th place finish and FA cup runner up were pretty mediocre for the club at the time. They won the Europa League the season before he came and the Champions League the season he got sacked.

To be fair he has done a very good job at Coventry in the Championship. Taking over a club in 17th in late November and leading them to 5th is great, very similar to what Carrick did at Boro when he started, although he didn't progress from there at all.
His record screams that the Championship is his level as a manager.
It doesn't scream that at all.
I'd say doing well in the championship and overall fucking terribly in the premier league screams championship level talent.

Carrick would reinstall some core West Ham values and discipline back at the Club, as well as command the respect of everyone. I reckon he'd also believe in the Academy players and give them a fair crack of the whip to prove themselves unlike what has been happening. Can't imagine him doing a worse job than Potter ignoring them most of the time.

We're in the relegation zone playing dogshit Football with the fans enthusiasm for it all on the floor and can't see him doing a worse job than gormless Potter, so I'd role the dice as it's toxic as fuck anyway.  🎲🎲

You also have to consider that Nuno or any other currently unemployed manager may not be available in January, or even next week. Obviously other managers can and will be put out of a job at any time but they may not want to start again immediately and also they have the stench of recent failure on them.

Everyone must know by now that it's a case of when not if for Potter getting the boot. Sullivan's got to bite the bullet and put him out of his misery asap or it's just going to cut down on our available choices for replacement week by week.

Heard a horrible rumour that Gary O Neill would be the choice if Potter goes. This would be Sullivan all over and would be the final nail in the coffin for me in terms of going over there anymore. 25 years a season ticket holder and never thought I'd consider giving it up

But Scorch is right: all these discussions are a little irrelevant while Sullivan remains in charge. He’ll employ a grateful yes man.

Look at the list of managers employed by Sullivan:

Avram Grant - Free - Out of contract
Sam Allardyce - Free - Out of contract
Slaven Bilic - Free - Out of contract
David Moyes - Free - Out of contract
Manuel Pellegrini - Free - Negotiated free release from contract
David Moyes - Free - Out of contract
Julen Lopetegui - Free - Out of contract
Graham Potter - Free - Out of contact

The list is both startling in its averageness (if that's even a word). Also the blatantly clear obvious profile that Sullivan goes for. Managers out of contract. Only one of that list was in contract at time we hired and that was Pellegrini. But he negotiated  a free release from his contract at Hebei China Fortune through goodwill and in recognition in the success he had brought to the club and its development.

Now, I am not saying they were out of contract because they were poor managers. But there is a whiff of picking from the current scrap heap about it. And when we have had a chance to get managers who would've cost us money, we backed away - Amorim and Frank. Probably more we don't know of.

Once again, its the reality. Sullivan deliberately avoids success. That list of managers proves it. If god forbid we ever did get close to qualifying for the CL, Sullivan would be shitting himself. His view of success is PL status with minimum spend.

Sadly, with him as owner, we deserve to go down.

The timing will dictate the choice. Mid season and in a relegation battle Sullivan’s focus will be about immediate impact/PL experience and any long term vision is out of the window.

If Potter goes now it will offer the next manager a lot less pressure, time to learn about his squad and time to prepare for a January window.

I’d rather Carrick as a long term vision for the club now  than Nuno come in around January in a scramble to survive.

We ain't getting anyone any better. The only hope really is that he at least does a Moyes and keeps us up and steadies the ship to prepare us for making a good, long term next choice at manager and putting us firmly in the right direction before he leaves- the kind of one Sullivan completely and utterly failed at when appointing Lop after Moyes. That was pretty much a sliding doors moment. The right man in with 150 million to spend could have ushered in a great new dawn. But he employed Lop and sanctioned 40 million quid and 7 years on Kilman.

The only way we'll move away from walking into catastrophe after catastrophe is removing the maker of all these fucking terrible top level decisions with manager and player recruitment.
Agree with all of that - except the Nuno bit. I don’t  rate him. Did well at Forest, granted. But he won’t stop the revolving door.

He absolutely won't. His record and our record both absolutely scream that. It's yet another short term appointment to apply a sticking plaster. As I said best hope is that he gets us at least to a slightly better place and still in the division before Sullivan gets another chance to fuck up choosing his successor to finally end this cycle of shit.

And at least with his record of short stays he's probably not going to be too interested in trying to get his feet under the table like Dyche would do- plus he might look at younger faster and more skillful players re: Forest to get us up the table unlike cloggers and shithouses like Dyche will.

He did well at Boro, ED. Turned a doom-laden side into play-off contenders. Then had to deal with little money, player sales and an injury list as long as your arm. In a league where everybody beats everybody.

With better resources, he’d have got them up. Know quite a few Boro fans from my WSC days: they rated him.

He’s likely to get it right somewhere. I’d rather it was with us. Mind you, he’s a bright lad: not sure what he’d make of a Sullivan and co. Not sure what any manager would make of Sullivan and his interference, really.

I don’t want Nuno.

IMHO, he’s a bang average manager - who has failed at as many places as he succeeded - and would be just another of the revolving door bosses at the club since the appointment of Glenn Roeder.

We’ve got to get off that interminable doomloop.

Looks like Mourinho is off to Benfica, which rules out the guy who absolutely would keep us up.

In that absence, I’d like to see us take a punt on a slightly more cerebral boss who nonetheless has some experience at a big club.

Our issue will be Sullivan’s ludicrous restriction to free agents.

Of those, Carrick (caretaker at Man Utd, boss at Boro) or Terzic (Dortmund) fit the bill perhaps a little better than most. Maybe let either of them rebuild?

Personal preferences, of course. But there’s a very high chance Nuno is in and out of West Ham within 2 years. Possibly less if we don’t stay up. He doesn’t really hang around anywhere particularly long. Out at Spurs in less time than Potter was out at Chelsea.

Here you go Chutney son.  I've made the important letter in my sentence all big and bold for you.
But that was as a caretaker when they were all over the place.

So what makes him second rate?

We're all over the place.  It's exactly the same situation.  What makes you think Lampard would come in and do better than Potter with the same tools?

Chelsea made same mistake in appointing fatty after Potter.  1 win in 11.  I don't want us doing the same, and there's absolutely no romance in him coming back to us, like there was with him and Chelsea.
Lampard would be a disaster

With Sullivan and co ruling Mourinho out ( due to him possibly challenging Sully, Brady and Board on their duplicitous natures ) , Nuno is imo the least worst choice of all the out of work managers available.

The compromise / trade off will be another “flip flop” in style  back once again to low possession and counters etc but he should hopefully organise the defence and make us hard to score against. He should also hopefully insist money is made available in Jan for a striker and even CB.  All in all he seems to represent the best svailsble option to avoid relegation which is where we have been headed, slowly but surely theee last 3 seasons.
