Re: Covered songs better than the original.
Breaking down the walls of heartache The Bandwagon (Northern Soul anthem and classic) but for me The Dexys Midnight runners cover was better.

Because the night - Patti Smith
To be fair Bruce Springsteen’s original wasn’t finished and he gave it to Patti Smith who added some lyrics

Copy Cat
Tbh the original would be better if not sung in Danish. This is the original writers version.

Proud Mary - Ike and Tina Turner
Rocking all over the World - Status Quo
One - Johnny Cash
I Put a Spell on You - Nina Simone
Definitely not Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence, or any cover of Tainted Love.

Re: Covered songs better than the original.
That song still terrifies me.
I was once in a pub cover band that used to play it. I had probably played and heard it a few hundred times at that point. Bass and drums had started the song and I was supposed to come in on guitar however many bars later.
My mind went completely blank. I hadn't just forgotten how to play it, I couldn't even remember how the riff went so I couldn't even fudge it (badly) on the spot.
I went over to the singer and explained and he sang the riff in my ear, then it all came back to me.
Not a fun moment on stage but the crowd who had clocked what was happening probably due to my look of absolute terror were pissing themselves.

Whisky in a Jar - Metallica, which is the definitive version. I won’t have anyone say otherwise.
Mike Flowers - Wonderwall.
Reel Big Fish - Take on Me
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
Whetus - A Little Respect
Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver
Bruce Dickinson - The Zoo
Placebo - Running up that Hill

I think that pretty much ANY cover of All Along The Watchtower is better than the original...

Re: Covered songs better than the original.
Blondie had plenty of great covers ;
Denis, Denis - Randy and the rainbows
The tide is high - John Holt
Hanging on the Telephone - The Nerves
.
Nick Heyward did a great version of 'Sounds from the Street' , by The Jam
