Yeah, it's pretty telling that in the last 15 years, we've made a loss on nearly all the 1st team players we've bought except Payet and Kudus, while young players that cost us nothing like Fletcher, Diangana and Rice have paid off. Yet for years Sullivan didn't want to invest anything in the academy because he thought it was a complete waste of money.

Yep, it does seem that way but since it's low risk, I like the idea of it. We can have an almost unlimited number of these and only one has to come good to fund all the others.

Yeah, maybe so. Hard to tell. The fact that he's only on a 1 year contract with 1 year option suggests that the club don't have much faith in him though.

Much as I admire the positivity, being released at 20 is quite a bit different to being released at 14. I don't imagine anyone's expecting him to end up as a premier league player, but we needed a replacement when we loaned out 2 of our other U21 keepers. We also brought in another 20 year old keeper, Reece Byrne.

I don't imagine Macaulay had anything to do with either signing, unless he's been scouting non league matches.

I get your point about being released at 20 rather than 14 but another way to look at it is that Manchester United saw first team potential in this kid for 6 years in a row after he was 14 and it was only at the very time he should have been knocking on the first team door that they drew the line.
