Toffees Everton vs West Ham | PL | 29.7.25 | Predictions and Match Thread

Post stubbo-admin »

Until West Ham find out mojo again,  a game against a David Moyes managed side will always have some kind of extra significance.

Layer on the pressure on Potter who looks like a dead man walking, and this game is under intense scrutiny.

It looks for all the world like Potter has two games, not to save his job, but to buy a stay if execution, against Everton and Arsenal, made none the easier by these two being amongst the best set piece side in the league....the Hammers clear achilles heel.

The stats this far have backed up the eye test...West Ham ARE terrible at defending the box, none of the keepers help out on crosses, and we give up corners willy nilly.

But if Potter is to cling on, nothing but a win here will do.

Interesting. As after the game a few Everton fans came on Talksport and although weren't screaming for Moyes head, they were disgruntled. Comments like "We should be more offensive at home" and "As soon as West Ham got into the game Moyes went defensive" and "Why are we looking like we are playing for a draw at home to West Ham". All sounds very familiar.

Then next day, cue Jeff Stelling and Allu McCoist swiping at the Everton fans - Saying they should be grateful and if it wasn't for Moyes they would be playing Championship football in their new stadium. And the worst comment from Stelling "Moyes has done so much for Everton, he should not be getting criticised".

I mean, fuck me, turn it in. Talk about the old pals act. The Everton fans were making very intelligent and balanced comments about one game. Yet, apparently they aren't allowed to do that. Fucks me right off. What is it about Moyes where he is seemingly bullet proof in the media?

Having read one of their forums last night it was a carbon copy of this place under the last season and a half under Moyes tenure.

Also, the player he put in Potts place, after starting him throughout pre season, was Rodriguez, not JWP.

That wasn't done because of his ego, that is pure fear and lack of bravery.

I don't think it's ego or arrogance, in the sense they are the main factors, not in the slightest. The man is a flake for fuck sake.

It was ultra caution, and a lack of bollocks. I called that about hom when he said the Chelsea job affected his mental health. If managing a football team on £10mil a year affects your mental health, go and stack shelves for £20k a year.

In my opinion (I said a few weeks back as well), it’s ego and ultimately arrogance, and then its fear. He has bet on a plan and he feels if he doesn't double down on it he looks weak. It’s a tragic way to live life mentally. In life you will be wrong, people will see you are wrong, how you adapt to those realities in leadership says a lot about you.

Potter has blind belief in his philosophy but didn't have any evidence to back up that belief. The more time went on it became obvious the emperor had no clothes. So it just ended up being ego driven madness rather than resilience or powerful thinking. He couldn’t even explain anything in his press conferences because ultimately none of it made any sense, so what could he say?

Also, when he made JWP his vice he completed fucked Potts as his team had bought 2 mids in and he probably really liked JWP as a person but couldn’t take captaincy off Bowen. So his solution was to make JWP as vice and therefore ever present and he doubled down on the idea because he cant be weak can he? He’s a proper tart …

Think that shows you all you need to know about Potter. Lacks courage and conviction. All well and good giving it large in pre-season and giving Potts and the fans some hope. Then come season proper he just dropped him out of sight. Fucking pathetic behaviour.

I thought our attacks broke down so many times when he received the ball, frustratingly held it up then completely wasted it by either a misplaced pass or just being too slow to sort his feet out. Yet again we desperately need a striker. Wilson and him are both OK as back ups but together as our only options are piss poor.

Another expensive flop. Looked good pre-season, he’s shed some timber and I thought me might have the traditional old school striker we’ve been looking for. Guess will be looking around for another striker (as per usual) in the next window.

If he struggles to get on the end of any of Dioufs outstanding crosses, then that should tell us everything about how much he is failing at his job..

By comparison Wilson already off the mark by getting on the end of 1 of Dioufs excellent deliveries with just a handful of minutes at Forest. Also Bowen against Palace.

Nah. He was toss. He's too slow and not dominant enough in the air to get away with it. We don't really supply many chances to him to be fair.

Potentially play him at 9 given the ineffectiveness of Fullkrug and Wilson.

Exactly that, Helmut.

We created 2 more chances with 14 efforts and 2 more corners than them with 5 Away from home with only 2 shoddy training sessions without Nunos proper Backroom Team with people he doesn't know at all. And a Team devoid of any confidence 2nd bottom. Sums the defensive obsessed geezer up.

He was a passenger for most of the game and fluffed chances in the box when they did arrive. Even to the point of getting in other players way like young Guilherme.

He's started 4 games out of 6 in all competitions and enjoyed a complete injury free Pre-Season which wasn't afforded to Wilson without a Club for so long and who's older. And yet even he manages to score already having only been here 5 minutes whereas Fullkrug continues to struggle to score or assist himself having been at the Club for over a year now.

It's shocking and can't believe we didn't cut our losses in the Summer whilst he was back fit and tried to sell him whilst we still could as he aint getting any younger. Now we will be lumbered with him until his contract runs out in 3 years time.

A bit more match sharpness? He's played in every single game this season bar being left on the Bench against Spurs. Also played for Gemrany. He hasn't scored or set up a single goal, whereas Wilson already has scored for even worse fitness due to zero Pre-Season.

After 26 appearances for West Ham he has only scored a pathetic total of 3 poxy goals.

The geezer is fucking pony against English opposition and probably only a matter of time before he breaks down altgoether again.

But how much of the ball did he see in those games? Last night he had more touches than probably all of those games combined. I agree he didn't do great with a many of them but early on he had some fantastic lay offs to Bowen. He also worked very hard off the ball to create space and hassle the defenders. He needs to improve and ultimately his lack of pace may be too problematic, but with Bowen and Summerville stretching defences and Diop's service, I think he'll come good. If he can stay healthy, and I recognize that is a huge if.

Here's my two penneth worth. Summerville, Bowen and Diouf were the outstanding players. Areola made some crucial saves. The midfield had some energy.

Nuno must have been on our chat forums because he picked the right team. KWP is a real find and as many have said, "he had Grealish in his pocket."

I think we would benefit from moving Paqueta back 20 yards and doing a Joelinton with him. He is a not a number 10 and fiddles around too much in the build up.

What the fuck was Stavros doing trying to dribble his way out of trouble?

I loved the way the subs were used during the game and the energetic vibes coming from Nuno and the team on the bench. Finally, it's so clear what needs to happen in the January transfer window.

Wasn't meaning to suggest anything other than that. I still expect any long periods of us not having the ball to be as dull as they were under Moyes, but hopefully the attacks will make up for it.
I would add that Moyesball (for me) usually involves making subs 15 minutes too late, rarely changing tactics and riding players into the ground with little opportunity for anyone else. At least one of those things didn't happen yesterday. ;-)
And also trying to sign the slowest players possible.
