Do you believe in God? How would you explain your beliefs?

Post Ceasar »

I have witnessed two miracles in my life so I fully believe in God.

I am a Christian and I also like Buddhism.

You reap what you saw Christians say which relates to Karma of the Buddhists.

Life is short, complicated and unexplainable in many ways so I can't imagine it simply being an beginning and an end.

I FEAR God
I have a moral compass that I won't cross for anyone...

I had a CofE upbringing and education as well and got it until it came to confirmation. At that point it struck me that God did not exist.
Having said that I believe that if want to foolow a way of living then the the teachings of Jesus Christ in the gospels are a bloody good place to start.
I have no truck with the Old Testament political Christian movement in the USA as they go against, pretty much, everything that Jesus taught. They are not all that far away from Tomas de Torquemada

Every single living person on the planet went through identical processes, albeit with differing main actors, and therefor hold virtually identical memories from the time in their lives that they had no way to describe linguistically what was happening to them until self-awareness and the tool of language grew within them.

Hardly surprising that some form of unnamed/unnameable character descending from above (but you had no word for "above", just the experience of them lifting you up against the force of gravity - again some nameless state you experienced) solving your problems features so highly in groups of people.

No need for a god of any sorts - just one or more caring parents/guardians.

I am surprised that this thread is still attracting interest, but really, I shouldn't be. In the many years I have been on WHO this subject regularly gets reposted.

In the past, I have tried to convince the non-believers and believers with concerns about God's apparent indifference to suffering to read David Bartholomew's "God of Chance" ( It is available for free download https://openlibrary.org/books/OL2985028M/God_of_chance). It was written back 1980s and added to in 2004 in "God of Chance and Purpose" that one you have buy. And there won't be any updates as Bartholomew got the definitive answer in 2017.

Without going too deeply into Bartholomew's arguments, the book should appeal to those of a scientific bent. There is a fair amount of statistical argument ( Bartholomew was a professor of the subject) but you can skip those chapters if it is not your thing. What he hopes to show that not only the probability of God but that for the necessity of free will (God's ultimate gift of love). God uses probability throughout His creation.

My scientific conclusion there "probably is a God" My conclusion in faith there definitely is a God. In between what this means, there is an unending set of questions.

"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known" from 1 Corinthians 13:12

Those chumps on this thread spouting off about not believing? Ask them the question again when they are on their deathbed.

Bless you.
If they change their mind on their deathbed, then everything groovy and ok, isn't it?

Live your life how you want to, and then worry about what happens when you die when you die.  Sounds good to me.

As a fellow believer I wouldn't be so sure that people who don't believe would suddenly start believing on their death bed. And even if they did what would that tell us other than people might find comfort in the idea of God when contemplating the end of their existence?

Although I detect some disdain for the certainty (and smugness) of the atheist posts and I share that up to a point. I fully understand and respect the atheist argument, and the sincerity of those who hold that view. But the smugness with which they present it is curious. It's quite well documented that believers are in a much happier place by many measures: less likely to be depressed and suicidal, more likely to marry and stay married, more likely to have large families and the offspring of those families are more likely to do well in school and in relationships as a consequence of the stability and the support networks that those religious families provide.

None of that is evidence of the existence of God but it does question what there is for non believers to be smug or feel superior about. Statistically, their life is a less happy and a less fulfilling existence. Not a lot a people can do that about that if they don't believe, and it's not a reason to start believing as it's perfectly possible that life is just miserable and they courageously accept their lot rather than delude themselves. But to feel smug about that state of affairs?

It's called FAITH mate.
If nothing else my early years at a hardcore COE school  definitely instilled a  moral compass and self  discipline in me  which I certainly didn't appreciate at the time ..but I do now.
You'd get the "slipper" for forgetting your Cap....but none of us grew up for the worse imo.

If you can truthfully and honestly answer the question "What is your earliest memory?" you will be on the path to realising that there is no (need to invent a) God.

I’m an atheist.  I’m possibly a humanist except that I don’t pretend to fully understand exactly what the difference between an atheist and a humanist actually is. I am a firm believer that science should be able to explain the universe without resorting to deities or magic.
Years ago I attended the funeral of an atheist who sadly died in his early 40s.  As part of the service,  some woman from a Humanist Society got up and delivered a speech in which she hammered home that god doesn’t exist and that there is no afterlife.  Well that cheered us all up no end.
