Another game at the soulless bowl. All eyes will be on the team selection in the first instance, with the hope that we revert to the Everton form, and purge the experimentation of the last two games.

Nuno seems to have confirmed that for him Paqueta is a fixture in the side at 10, so suggestions he might make way look impossible. Fullkrug remains sidelined. Earthy is back in contention, and Mavro remains on the sidelines. Ezra Myers and Fin Herrinck have been called up to train with the first team.

Predicted LineUp:

Areola

Wan Bissaka
Todibo
Kilman
KWP

Potts
Fernandes

Bowen (c)
Paqueta
Summerville

Wilson

Subs:
Hermansen, Igor, Diouf, Magassa, Irving, Soucek, Marshall, Earthy, Guilherme

Predicted Result:
More of the same seems likely, with them on form and another side with a powerful aerial presence.

West Ham 1 - 3 Newcastle

Apparently, the ONLY reason we won was because the Geordie maggots were so bad. No one could understand how the media darlings got beaten, the first goal was a goalkeeping error, the second a joke, flukey own goal and the third another goalkeeping error, oh and VAR got the offside totally correct for a flagrant offside. Yep, that's absolutely fucking correct, let me get out the smallest violin I can find and see if I can find a tune that says Fuck right off. Result shows as 3-1. Boo-fuckin-hoo, good luck, nah I doont mean that either, waieye, in the Champions League.

On another note what ever happened to getting booked for simulation or play acting. Last nights game Sunderland v Everton, fuck me, the Sunderland players were rolling around like there were snipers in the crowd over every little touch, every time a ball hit a defender, screaming penalty. What a load of shit Premier League footballers are. A stronger ref would have red carded at least two Sunderland players.

Tiring players, protecting what you have, restricting them to one shot, getting another goal that could have been two?

Shutting up shop is not a Team that kept attacking soon after Wilson went off with at least 5 shots on target off the top of my head that resulted in a disallowed goal before we eventually did score again in searching for a killer goal thanks to the Teams perseverance. Think we also had 3 corners as well.
We didn't keep on attacking

So how did Pope save from Bowen, Paqueta, Soucek, Kilman whilst failing to stop Potts (although ruled out) and Souceks other effort from scoring, as well as winning a number of corners and free kicks in their final 3rd?
Maybe shutting up shop isn't quite the right way to describe our second half, and I did say that we had a few attacks, but I certainly saw it that we didn't attack nearly as much as in the first half. The first half went very well, I just couldn't see why it needed to change.

We were pulling them apart in multiple waves. I hesitate to say it but our defending crosses and corners has been much better as well.

Diouf is a head-scratcher. Almost like a quicker version of Cresswell but somehow worse than his defending last year.
Reminds me so much of Lazaridis when Harry played him as a left wing back - quick, dodgy defensively but able to hit a cross while running at full speed and causes havoc when he gets forward.

Wouldn't it be nice to try that, we weren't able to defend corners but end up facing loads because even if we clear one it's only coming straight back in because we rarely have anyone in a position to contest the ball.

A couple of teams did that at the weekend apparently, definitely worth us thinking about it, Summerville & Bowen ain't defending anything, them 2 and Wilson up top, would definitely give the oppo something else to think about.

I like what Chelsea did against spurs, when spurs got a corner Chelsea sent 3 men up front, you could initially see the spurs defenders looking absolutely lost and didn’t have a clue wether to attack the corner or drop back, it obviously worked because spurs didn’t score from a corner. Fancy a coach thinking outside the box and not just following what’s in the FA’s coaching manual.

Whenever he does that weirdo double ear tweak before entering the pitch I'd like to rip his ears off before shouting in to them "You're a useless fucking carthorse anyway! Now fuck off!". Then I'd fling his ears at his gormless face whilst he holds his luggage.

Who in their right mind does that? 😂

I completely agree, but that cant be blamed on the manager. This thread is about the game yesterday, not the state of the club.

For what it's worth, as much as he didn't occupy the CB's like Wilson did, I think Soucek gave them something else to think about, and also helped defend our own box. Far from ideal, but it's doing the best with what we've got.

I'm in no way saying this is turning the corner, Burnley will be a better gauge, but we beat a Champions League team 3-1, and we haven't won at home for months on end. Moaning at the manager for taking 33 year old Wilson off, who was puffing out his arse, not for me.

I'd agree that we were mostly in control and not hanging on, but although we had a few attacks in the second half it did seem as though we had, as Rob Green put it, shut up shop, and the trouble with defending a one-goal lead is that just one lack of concentration near the end could have given them an undeserved equaliser, which almost happened, twice.

Yeah we definitely weren't hanging on being in control of the game enjoying a number of attacks of our own when Wilson went off. Pope soon after was made to make saves from a Paqueta freekick, Kilman header, Bowen shot, Potts disallowed goal and our eventual 3rd goal of the day. Newcastle offered very little by comparison even when chasing the game.

We didn't keep on attacking, we had no one to play it up too, we had the odd break away, defending a 1 goal advantage at 60 mins would have got him slaughtered if they had scored. They had 60% of play then.

Re Sweep earlier, there set pieces were poor, everyone, even the pundits on “match of the day” know we’re shit at corners, long throws etc, but Newcastle failed to deliver the correct ball, now if it had been Arsenal or even Spurs then our centre halves would have been found out. One swallow doesn’t make a summer.

Thought Wilson looked absolutely spent when he was taken off, he had put a proper shift in, thankless task but he used all his nous and kept their defenders busy. The problem is we don't have an alternative, don't like to be too harsh about our young players but Marshall looked like he'd won a raffle to play in the last game.

As for Freddie Potts, what can you say? His movement is outstanding, I don't use that word lightly, and that is the sign of a proper player. We're all know it alls, but I did point that out before the season started was the thing I was most impressed with pre-season. Passing is crisp, and he loves a tackle. Future captain, never been so sure of something.

Paqueta has received absolute dogs abuse on here recently, but it just shows you when he plays with midfielders who can pass and move. World of difference. He's the main man who can keep us up, no more Irving, JWP & Rodders, and Soucek strictly an impact sub.

Desperately still need a centre back, a striker, and a wide player, as an injury to Bowen or Summerville leaves us badly short. Also got to think about fullbacks, as we lose 2 to that pointless competition early next year. Burnley will give us a real indication if we can stay up, still so much work to do, but yesterday gave us hope.

There were very few occasions yesterday where the back line was left exposed to a flow of attackers just waltzing into empty space in front of them - the defending in front of the defenders was much improved.

We also had a few 4v4 counter attacks of our own which we should, maybe, have made better use in the second half.

Thought their set pieces were a bit bizarre - they didn't seem as though they had done their homework ; the delivery was poor, they weren't putting the ball into the same places others have profited from when playing against us.  We looked surprisingly comfortable.

I'd probably more say 'apdoting a more defensive mindset and absorbing pressure' rather than hanging on as they never really threatened to overrun us. Lots of possession but so little of it harmful. We never looked overly stretched, tired or on the ropes and still carried a danger by moving it quickly from back to front if we got the ball back. There was a lot less desperation punts to no-one to clear our lines than usual. instead we were looking for players to run on to a ball forward to start quick counter attacks. That was great to see. I think Guilherme could be a useful sub with 10-15 to go, going forward to play that sort of role on for Summerville or even up front if we keep an ability to do that and can manufacture 3 on 3 breaks late on in games.

Very importantly we didn't make any silly mistakes at the back or get sloppy or lose concentration which we've been dreadful at avoiding in the last 18 months. Aside from some errant kicks from Areola we kept it simple and kept concentration.

Made replacements and yet we still managed to put the ball in the net twice with 1 goal narrowly ruled out by the finest of margins. He shored us up and still made sure we had a goal threat trying to score more which I liked to see.
We came under huge pressure and were hanging on. But yeah. we did hang on and as Newcastle chased, we got the chances.
Hanging on? I never saw that at any stage of the game.

They had all the possession and we were struggling to get out the half, most of the live updates were saying the same thing. But yeah, we did hang on, when we went without a striker on 60 minutes, it put us on the back foot, against other teams we would have suffered, thankfully Newcastle were poor.

Todibo was a lot better, and with Potts and Wilson, provided a spine we havent had in a long while.

Very early days before we know if the proverbial “corner turned” moment has occured. Encouraging and confirmed that us fans were right saying that midfield is key and where games are mostly won or lost.

But a striker still desperately needed, another CB and another central midfielder in Jan still needed.

Lets see if we can get this level consistently before getting ahead of ourselves but lots of positives.

Exactly, great starting 11 (finally) then got rid of the striker with 30 mins to go and we struggled, he then kept replacing attackers with defenders.

The only 'strange' tactical change I could see was swapping Kilman (right hand side) and Todibo (left hand side), but it worked.  Todibo had his best game for us.  Kilman was also better than he has been recently.
