Cloud Storage
Have a server with approx. 15Tb of data stored on it, mainly films and music.
Have never really been a fan of cloud storage but realise this is probably the way forward, especially if I want to access my files from almost anywhere.
Bloke in work recommended BackBlaze, and seems to be decently priced.
Any of you cunts use a cloud storage solution? If so, what would you recommend?

As they were taking up too much space, I offloaded the DVD's and Blu-Rays to a local charity shop.
The 4k discs, and all my CD's I've retained.
They are normally just £3.50 to stream on demand. So you’d need to be watching more than 20 of your films a year before you break even on your storage fee. Suppose you made that calculation already. And I thought I watched a lot films.

Re: Cloud Storage
Not sure why anyone would need to keep 15 TB of music and films, unless they are your own work you are archiving.
I’d keep, say, 1 TB of the most favourite stuff and then just keep the old disks.

Any of you cunts use a cloud storage solution? If so, what would you recommend?Plenty of "off-line" solutions. I've got 3 synchronised 40Tb NAS I use for storage, one in the UK and 2 elsewhere, all inter-linked via VPN.
Storage is as cheap as chips at the moment and if you've got a bunch of unused disks lying around you can coral them into one big virtual drive as a (USB) storage back-up.
2 of my servers cost a bag of sand each once fully configured, which I did over a few months to spread the cost out. I can access (stream) that data from anywhere that has a decent internet connection, which is most places, these days.
The benefit is that, being physically in-house, there is much less chance of somebody assessing your files and putting you somewhere on their political spectrum/selling that assessment to others. No chance of any fee increases down the line, either.Textbook oldschool paedo setup that. Who the fuck needs that amount of stuff stored in 2025? Massive red flag.
The only thing resembling a red flag here is your jam-rag.
If you absolutely must have someone watching your every move, go in balls deep on cloud storage and streaming and only use on-line software like Office 365 & Acrobat.
Your data/personal information, not mine, so I give a fuck that can't even be arsed to fly.

Cheers Mike
Interesting that the more tech-savvy on here would seem to favour an on-site as opposed to cloud solution as no ralternative ecommendations forthcoming.
All good, and sort of mirrors my feelings with regard security tbh.
Many thanks gents, much appreciated.
Looks like I'll need to spend a bag on the kit I need, or give Mrs Ghost the absolute fucker of a Christmas wish list.

Have been looking at a 4 bay U Green NAS.
Problem I have is my backups are stored across 6 discs of about 3Tb each (they were lying around spare), so I'd also have to buy at least 2 new 8-10 Tb drives. A monkey for the NAS, plus another for the two drives I'd need. The cloud service I've been recommended is $99 per year, unlimited storage.
Plus as we know, mechanical disc aren't infallible.
Sounds like how my set-up evolved. Whilst working/travelling I acquired about 10 4Tb external USB drives over the years (some have since failed). I bought a 4-Bay NAS and a single 4TB HDD ever month after that and began copying everything over.
Quickly ran out of space in the NAS so started swapping out to 6/8/10 Tb drives but it got to be quite a pain going through that every month or so, so I bought a 2nd NAS, mirrored the 1st, making disk upgrades easier. They stay in sync with rsync that runs every night.
The old USB external drives I then hung off a Raspberry Pi (3) and merged using Logical Volume Management, which then became a single drive 24Tb 3rd media server. They're augmented with a 4 Bay USB enclosure within which reside the hard drives I recovered from my old PC when I upgraded to a SFF model. The benefit of this is nothing sits on that SFF PC, so if it dies I still have my data.
I think the cost of NAS and hard drives has dropped considerably since I built my config, so you may well be able to put something similar together for about 500 sovs.

TBH mate, RAID 1 will do me if I go down the 'on-site' route.
Would probably opt for a couple of WD Red NAS drives.
And don't you fucking start fella

Presumably the NAS can do RAID but then you have to buy twice as many disks if you are super conservative. RAID 5 appears to be the sweet spot. The mean time between failure for spinning metal disks is pretty damn good nowadays and they won't be getting stressed storing media.

I have three NAS with music and movies mostly, one is always online, the other two are off line except when they are being synced. I don't trust other people with my data, there was a big music company that lost loads of musicians original recordings to a fire, Capitol I think?
It wasn't Capitol it was Universal.
