What a difference a game made. Last week, despair and not knowing where the next scrappily won point would come from.  Fast forward 5 days, and there is expectation that we see off Burnley like the upstarts they are, that Nuno has found the 'formula' and it's onwards and upwards from here.

Of course, these things are rarely ever black or white, and somewhere in the middle is more likely, but with the emergence of Potts from his bench-shackles, a reinvigorated and impactful Paqueta supported by colleagues that could operate on his wave length, and the energy of Fernandes, there were at least glowing embers in the previously distinguished firepit.

The Burnley game will also see pre-match protestation, with the (as of now) 16,000 signature petition delivered to the Club in printed form at the end of a 'Stratford to the Stadium' protest march, which should hopefully see also a positive mood and energy spill over into support.

Team wise, Nuno has hinted at some knocks from the previous game...but training videos looked to show all the main protagonists in attendance except Wilson.

Predicted line-up.

Hard to see anything but enforced deviation from the team that beat Newcastle.  Wilson maybe a lingering doubt.  Kante, Golambeckis and Myers continue to train with the first team, so it will be interesting to see if someone like Kante with his presence and stature can show enough raw ability to push past others to a place on the bench in the coming weeks.
Areola

Wan Bissaka  Kilman  Todibo  Diouf

Potts  Fernandes

Bowen (C)    Paqueta   Summerville

Wilson (Soucek)

Subs:  Hermansen, Igor, Myers, KWP, Irving, Soucek, Guido, Guilherme, Magassa.
Predicted Score:

Things at West Ham rarely run smoothly.  It wouldn't surprise me to see Burnley get the first gut-punch of a goal, and for us to then have to scrap tooth and nail to get something from the game. They have a good solid midfield, and have been clinical in attack thus far.  In what feels like a must not lose game, I could see a draw as an outcome, but hopefully buoyed by the Newcastle result, we find a way to prevail.

West Ham 2 - 1 Burnley.
(Bowen, Summerville)

COYI!

Did you?
You didn't appear to be so sure on August 28th fella🤔
I agree that it is a very high risk strategy. In fact, it is arguably insanity to drop £20 million on a keeper who's team has just been humiliatingly relegated and £40 million on a midfielder from a team that just finished rocked bottom and had the second worse Premier League season in history.

Only at West tHam eh!

The fickleness by some on here regarding Soucek is frankly laughable. An important win, especially as the Bees played well but it was a tough watch. Good to see Fernandes starting to show what he's about.

Obviously we need another striker in January as Wilson can only do 60-70 mins
Have said before Souceks role should now be as a sub in the last 15mins if we are chasing a goal as the other team sits in or we are trying to hold on as our box is being bombarded.
Amusing that Nuno is doing what Potter & Moyes were always criticised for … bringing on two extra defenders (Igor & KWP) when we are holding on.
We have scored when they came on!
Dont mind extra defenders unless you invite pressure by stringing 6 across the back.
These players with defensive instincts need to be up the pitch to win the ball in midfield & frustrate the other team
Or pop up on the goal line to smash in the winner like KWP!

Those that have criticised him have been proved 100% correct. He has been mostly gash as a starting central midfielder, we as a team were really suffering partly because of him in that role and his poor movement and passing.

I know for myself personally, I've always said his role should strictly be as an impact sub, to defend our own box and cause aggro in the other later on in games. That's what is happening, and funnily enough it's working.

Not sure this attempt at calling people out has been properly thought through.

Its true that soucek is not the box to box, or striker we are looking for over 90 mins. But give him 30 mins on any part of the pitch and hes a fucking ballon dor world beater. Best get out of dodge option in the league.

Did well yesterday didn't he. I didn't want him brought on ahead of Magassa and was much happier when Magassa did come on and he was moved up, at first he popped up on the left wing.

As decent as he was we need a fucking striker just buy one in January ffs you useless cunts.

The deficiencies of his game have been done to death, surely it's better to delight in the moments he's still able to produce it for us like today instead of dragging up how slow and lacks legs with poor passing.

Currently 30yo, still got another 5 years left in the tank with an important role mainly from the bench now we have the younger chaps ready to come in.

In either box he is excellent. He defends our box like a warrior and he attacks the oppositions box like a predator. So consistent at what he does well.

The phrase in Football that's made for him is..

"In the right place, at the right time, Soucek again"
I have to admit I get a bit tired of fan noise around this guy. Yes he is exposed for pace in a midfield that doesnt have a Declan Rice. I've been wondering if any manager would try him up front or in defense because this guy is a menace to defense, an asset at set pieces and gets in great positions. Of course you can say the keeper handed the goals to us but if you really watch more than his pace and limited passing range then there is a lot to like and I can understand why managers want him in the team. Total commitment to the club and his team mates, the sort of player prior to the Premier League generation that we would have lauded and celebrated.
He isnt a Elite finisher either but my goodness we havent had one since the noughties.

Much more suited to be a forward/9 or attacking mid who just stays up field.

No Legs Soucek..

Definitely has stamina. More talking about pace tbh. I’d love him to be a bit faster but it is what it is. But being more upfront, maybe he’s found his calling?

I just think Soucek is too slow to be a box to box or defensive mid in the PL.

Especially as we are playing less counter attacking football these days I think it's kind of an ideal scenario for Soucek as pace is less of an issue. Also doesnt have to track back from that position as much.

I really think Nuno is seeing him more as an attacker/9 and will be rotating between him/Wilson and Fulkrug when he's back. I think thats wise as without the speed I dont see him being in CM too much for us going forward.

Virginia.  Ive no problem with him being an impact sub or vital squad player

I DO have an issue when hes starting every week in midfield as he does not have the legs.  Especially when paired with snails like jwp or irving

Difficult to believe how many of our fans give Soucek shit for being wank. Tries his arse off every week, cops plenty of stitches each season and scores goals in the dirty places others won't go.

He's an invaluable player at WHU......
