Transfer window- are we at an unfair disadvantage due to playing tonight?

Post El Scorchio »

"Seems like playing a game this evening could really hinder us getting any last day deals done, even if this transfer window has been a bit weirdly quiet. Loads of the staff, the manager and all the players will be occupied with preparing for and playing in the game, and that’s far less resource than all the other clubs can put into getting anything done so surely we are less able to buy anyone. It’s going to be very difficult for any of our players to play and also negotiate anything if there’s interest in them- or might they refuse/be unable to play at the last minute because of it? (Benny, Cornet, Fornals etc. or anyone else someone might enquire about today. Could really fuck with our plans. At least we’re at home so it’s not quite as bad as it likely is for Bournemouth and Man U but the three of us and Wolves seem to have a really raw deal in terms of the chance to potentially get anything done and certainly a big disadvantage against the other 16 clubs. Or realistically no impact at all?"

"Thankfully it won't have any effect. Everything to do with transfers will be being handled by the clerical staff - the Club Secretary etc - people that won't/don't need to be involved on matchday. I'm making the assumption that Moyes has given them a list/had discussions about who he wants in/doesn't mind leaving and all of the permutations therein, of course!"

Funny. Didn’t even give it a thought then- and you’d think that’s the far more crucial deadline day.

Any deals we were going to do should be agreed by now and today is about sorting the paper work That doesnt need the manager or the players If we are sourcing new deals at 7.30pm tonight thats just a shambles Thought Benrahma to Lyon on loan with an obligation to buy at £15m+ was agreed?

I do wonder what Moyes learnt when he went to Red Bull. It's like he went there to do the exact opposite of what they do.

"Yeah, us and Luton were the only teams playing on the last deadline day. Moyes talked about this yesterday: “My job is to get the team ready and try and perform and you have to think about the players I might need to use and whether their focus is elsewhere. We had this at the start of the season as well, at Luton. Now we've had it again. Not that you want to do your business on the last day of the window, nobody wants to do that. “You know how many deals get done in the last day. I'm laughing with [technical director] Tim [Steiden] about it. Tim's German and they've got it all done, tools down early, all the stuff done whereas we're last minute. He's probably struggling to get used to our culture. “The culture here is lots of deals at the end and the supporters hoping for a last-minute deal. Maybe this window there will be but at the moment it's not as if it's been a huge window for anybody.”"

"Definitely agree a smart club would try to get their business done sooner, although a lot of stuff doesn’t get moving until the last minute for whatever reason and more often than not due to the selling club. There is no denying we have some pressing needs though and it’s a little disappointing to be rehashing two years ago and not addressing almost all of them. But still there’s no denying that the four teams today won’t find it as straightforward as the other 16. Fraser- did we? Genuinely don’t know. Not sure why it didn’t pop into my thoughts then- unless everyone played?"

"You mean we may have left it all to the last minute? FFS everyone knows when the window opens and closes, only the desperate seem to do business at the death. whatever has happened we have either fucked it up or clubs have wanted to big fees, greedy agents and players with unrealistic demands have seen deals fall over. Personally, its maybe something in the middle. Few hours to go but i won't be holding my breath or waiting for the Ghost of Gold to tweet dont go to bed just yet!"

"If we win, we're 5 points off a Champions League place. Tottenham have strengthened this window, and will improve. We won't. It's 2 years ago all over again. It's like they've learnt fuck all."

"If Steidten is in charge of transfers then it shouldn't effect us buying anyone. He doesn't need to be at the match and he can agree beforehand with Moyes/Sullivan who the priority targets are and what the maximum budget for each one is. Obviously causes problems with any possible outgoings. We could just not bring to the match any of those who might be going, but that puts us at a disadvantage not only for the match, but also in terms of negotiating, as we've made it clear we want to get shot of the player. That said, we should have learnt our lesson by now and made sure we do all our transfer business much earlier in the window."
