Saturday football

"MANCHESTER CITY vs EVERTON (1230) An interesting, if probably predictable, start to the weekend’s action. Everton are deep in the mire, no doubt about that, and City will look to top the table again if only for a couple of hours. Home win. FULHAM vs BOURNEMOUTH (1500) Fulham are enjoying an iffy run of form with just one win in their last six. The Cherries have pulled well clear of the bottom three and unless disaster strikes will survive the season with top flight status intact. There’s little to choose between these two. Draw. LIVERPOOL vs BURNLEY (1500) Poor old Burnley look doomed. Liverpool will look to regain top place. Home win. LUTON TOWN vs SHEFFIELD UNITED (1500) A true six-pointer, assuming the Blades are still fighting for survival. Which they’re probably not. Could be an interesting blood-and-guts encounter of the old fashioned type. Home win. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR vs BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (1500) Where’s the Brighton that illuminated the first half of the season? Between Shoreham and Newhaven. For Spurs, this is an opportunity to return to the top four, if only for a day. Home win. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS vs BRENTFORD (1500) What a season Wolves, in 10th, are having. There weren’t many Wolves fans who wholeheartedly welcomed Gary O’Neil’s appointment on the cusp of this season, but he’s done them proud. So far. Brentford are flirting with the drop and today’s unlikely to help their cause. Home win. NOTTINGHAM FOREST vs NEWCASTLE UNITED (1730) Forest, too, are playing with fire although their fate still lies entirely in their own hands. Newcastle, whom many expected to be challenging for at least a top four finish, have disappointed and will find their hosts far from easy opposition. Draw. *SUNDAY* WEST HAM UNITED vs ARSENAL (1400) Although you’ll hope they won’t, you’d expect Arsenal to win this and maintain their title challenge. Paqueta’s still out, but Kudus and Bowen represent our greatest danger in attack. There’s always a decent atmosphere in this fixture and that should help the attempt to make it three out of three against today’s opposition this season. Which would gives David Moyes a splendid opportunity to do an Arteta celebration. Pigs might fly. Draw. ASTON VILLA vs MANCHESTER UNITED (1630) Chances are Spurs overtook Villa yesterday into fourth place. This gives Villa a decent chance to return the favour. They’re marginally stronger than Man U and more consistent. Home advantage too. Home win. *MONDAY* CRYSTAL PALACE vs CHELSEA (2000) Palace are five points clear of the drop zone. Comfortable for now, but nowhere near certain safety. Chelsea are in the bottom half of the table and just seven points above their hosts. This could actually be a decent watch. Draw. *CHAMPIONSHIP* There’s a nice little battle developing at the foot of the Championship. Actually, not so little, as a mere five points are all that separate the seven sides between Millwall in 16th and QPR in the third relegation place. Millwall visit Coventry tomorrow, while QPR host ninth place Norwich this afternoon. The Canaries are in the hunt for a ply-off place, for which the battle is even more intense with five points keeping teams from sixth to 13th apart. At the top, Leicester (who play Watford, away) maintain a comfortable lead, while Southampton (Huddersfield, H), Leeds (Rotherham, H) and Ipswich (West Brom, H) have just two points between them."

Luton can really pile the pressure on the likes of Everton/Forest/Palace/Brentford today. Spurs/Brighton and Villa/Manu look like 2 good games.
