I think it's a pretty even match up. Patriots have the edge in regard to coaching experience, but young Mike (who we wanted before we got Quinn) has done great in Seattle. Both defences are good. On the attacking side of things, the Seahawks arguably have the one true elite player on either team in Njigba. I also like the running back Walker, but losing Charbonnet has put the full load on him, so I think the Pats may have the edge there with Stevenson, and the more explosive Henderson. Kooper Kupp has probably the most big game experience, so you wouldn't put it past him having an impact. Pats also have a very good veteran TE in Hunter Henry. Not a fan of Kraft, but really like Vrabel/Maye and would be happy for them to win, but I just see Seattle getting over the line if Darnold keeps his cool

Yeah Gastineau and Klecko really frightened the fuck out of offences and of course the Giants had Lawrence Taylor and the Packers had the "minister of defence" in Reggie White, the Vikes had John Randle who I really liked. but you're right, the game doesn't allow that type of violence anymore due to lawsuits arising from early dementia etc.

defence reminds me of prime time Chicago Bears, Mike Ditka, Buddy Ryan, Mike Singletary and Walter Payton.

I know ( Sweetness) Payton wasn't part of that defence but you get what I mean.

The “46 Bear” defense, and our NY Sack Exchange are my two favourite defenses ever.

Buddy Ryan was a genius. That innovation, bringing one of his safeties (#46, Doug Plank, hence the term) right up to the d-line and “over” blitzing regularly to overwhelm teams, transformed the league for a few years until HCs finally worked out how to beat it.

#46’s mere presence near the line freed up room for Singletary and Mike Dent etc to destroy QBs. They properly hurt people, too, like the Gastineau-Klecko-Lyons-Salaam sack exchange.

Animals! I think the rules don’t allow that level of violence any more!

Gut feeling, though: Glenn is a bit of a show pony and likes linebacker speed ahead of power and strength on his front four/five. So I think we’ll draft Reese at #2. Which might be a position or two too high.

Reese is good, and rapid, but he needs to add some weight for the NFL.

I’d sort the line first. Then the secondary.

Ironically, our o-line is decent. Fashanu, Membou, Myers and Tippman are solid (especially the first two). Could do with a guard or two.

But, yeah, our defensive line lacked penetration and our secondary (the “no interceptions” gang) was utterly shite.

Many people assume we’ll take Reese, the linebacker with the #2 pick. And he’s very good. But I’d trade out the #2 pick if there’s a market for Reese, down to about #6 or #7, pick up another first or second rounder, and take the defensive lineman Bain from Miami first.

You're right, Shorty, we need to build our pass rush/trenches and get line pressure on QBs.

It’s purely rational hatred - in the same way that West Ham’s hatred of Millwall is!

But, honestly, I think the Seahawks have the better side but the Patsies have momentum. And in one-off games, especially a final, I would tend to go with momentum.

My head says New England, my heart says Seattle (as much for Darnold as anything else, plus I never want to see New England win any sort of match - even a training walk-through!).

Vrabel is an excellent coach, and Maye is an excellent young QB. Alongside (injury prone) Daniels, he’s the new crop. Up to now, he’s been impressively nerveless. How Maye reacts to such a massive game at a young age could decide the result. If Seattle get any sort of pressure on him, then his reaction to big moments will be everything.

Okay , Ive just watched the Seahawks Vs Pats SB  from 2014.
Now I'm a novice , but I went into expecting to see  the reason for this Seahawks revenge angle..?.
 I noticed the Seahawks got double lucky on the play  PREVIOUS to enable this hard luck story to even be a thing..?

Jets have a new “DC”. He’s a low-key appointment from Miami’s backroom staff. Ordinarily, I’d be pissed off about such an unambitious appointment. But the reality is it looks likely that Aaron Glenn will call defensive plays next season and the new guy will carry the clipboard.

Time for Glenn to shit or get off the pot, so to speak. So he’s going back to his DEtroit co-ordinator role. I don’t mind that - it’s what Saleh should have done.

But it means that the Jets need a good, experienced OC who can call plays and take some workload off Glenn.

It seems this situation was forced on Glenn by Woody, who told the HC that he’s paid $10m a year and he’s trying not to call plays on either side of the ball - all while the team is shit. So the owner refused to sanction two high-profile, expensive co-ordinators.


 

We were after Brian Flores but I think he wants a HC job, so instead took his secondary coach as our new DC. Big year for Dan Quinn, but I have faith he'll turn things around

My mistake - the Jets own four of the top 44 picks in the draft. (#2, #16, #33 and #44). Then we own three first-rounders in 2027. That's 7 of the top 76 college players in the next 18 months.

A top-level owner, GM and HC would be licking their lips. The Patriots, Chiefs, Steelers, 49ers or Ravens would build a divisonal/title winning team. We have Johnson, Mougey and Glenn. Forget it.

Meanwhile, the Jets off-season is turning into an absolute shitshow that’s reaching new depths.

We have no coaches. And while every other franchise is already making good appointments and hoovering up the actual talent on the market, we’ve cut people so late that we now have to engage in protracted recruitment processes that means good coaches will be off the market by the time we appoint.

With the OC, for example, I think the Rooney rule ensures we have to interview at least one non-white coach at least twice - in-person (which means travel etc). It’ll take ages if it’s done correctly. By which time, good co-ordinators will go elsewhere.

We should have cut Engstrand in December or early Jan.

Same reason the Jets foolishly let him go: he wasn’t perfect (who is?) and you had your eye on somebody the shallow media/NFL pundits were telling you might be closer to perfect. (In the Vikes’ case JJ McCarthy and in the Jets’ case Zach Wilson).

The “promise” of the new (draft) QB etc seems always to outweigh the reality of having a decent, but imperfect, guy with hands-on experience.

Both the Jets and Vikes should have kept Darnold.

Yet another coach sacked by Glenn - Engstrand, the OC. That’s eight or nine now (I’ve lost count).

Ironically, most fans - and many good pundits - would tell you that the Jets are now just one sacking away from being in a decent position: Glenn himself. After that, all major posts would be vacant!

My view is that we’d even need to go one step further than that, and get rid of the owner, too. THEN you could rebuild the whole franchise.

Saw tue seahawks against the saints in seattle and after about 10 minutes with brees running the show it was like being at Highbury, was hilarious.

Was then on to San fran to see the niners and I've never seen a home player take so much shit than kaepernick did that night, was fucking brutal.
