What was the first major news story you remember as a child?

Post COOL HAND LUKE »

"Assassination of JFK is the first I can remember, but worst by far was the Aberfan disaster in 1966... I've visited the site and the graves there, it was desperate bad luck - fifteen minutes earlier or a day later and the children would not have been there... and nobody at the NCB was ever held to account for it, despite many warnings about the state of the slag mountain up above the village."

"Brian Kidd did score, he got the 3rd goal. Not that I knew who he was though, I was only 5 and was allowed to stay up and watch it as live football was a rarity."

"CHL, I think you and I must be around the same age. JFK is certainly the first one that I remember. The Aberfan disaster was the one that had the most resonance with me. Mum was a Londoner but my dad was from a mining town in Wales. When mum heard the news she just caught the bit about the event and not where it was and she was so worried that it might have affected dad’s family."

Actually I rather think it’s become interesting as it is considering our understanding of long-term memory and child development. Shame it seems to be upsetting you.

"Hammer i am. Its really simple mate. The Stones story was the lead story on the onlyb2 channels that broadcast news. The same was true of the Daily Mirror, front page news and photo's. And a sister who wouldnt shut up about the unfairness of it all. Those are not hard dots to join up. Ol Dopey just couldnt resist having a pop in his snidey cunty way but once again he has bitten himself on the arse"

"Yes, that’s right - you’ve just come up with a whole load of scenarios that might make a story of that kind memorable for a seven-year-old. Well done you. Problem is, all he can talk about is his sibling collecting Stones records and playing with Beatles jigsaws. You’ve got him seriously thinking about taking smack which of course makes it all fall into place for you. Righto."
