Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
"Vexed 11:14 Mon Jan 1 First of all, thank you for your well considered response. It's good to know we can on occasions have opposing views without biting each others heads off, (except for your final paragraph in which you cunted yourself once again, such a disappointment.) FWIW I also feel the frustration of nights like the Liverpool game which without doubt was an opportunity missed. Actually I was more concerned by the defeat at Fulham a couple of weeks previously as that was almost the full first XI with no excuses. (Except Alvarez). The Premier League response since the Fulham has been excellent with 3 wins with no goals conceded. But, had I been one of the 6,000 travelling fans at Anfield I am not sure I could forgive too quickly. Perhaps if you look at the wider picture it's about squad strength in depth. going back a couple of years look how Wolves struggled balancing the Europa League. This season, at all levels teams are finding it hard to balance too many competitions. Brighton have gone backwards in the Premier League as they also contend with a number of injuries, Villa look good in the Prem but not so good in the Europa Conference. The wheels have come off for Newcastle with a lengthy injury list and the rigours of the Champions League, they look shot to bits. Arsenal and City with their vast and talented squads are having mid season PL blips but both look good in the CL. Liverpool are the only team doing well at all levels, I just hope that decide the Europa League is a distraction toward the middle of March and they focus on winning the PL. (Highly unlikely but hey!) You also have to consider the possible sale of the club which, I am sure, has been delayed by the deaths of David and Jacqueline Gold in quick succession. Sullivan needs stability and consistency to find the best investor(s) to take the club forward. David Moyes represents stability on the pitch and Tim Steidten with Mark Noble represents that off the field. Not sure anyone can doubt Tim Steidten's affect since joining us in the summer. My best guess is David Moyes will be with us for a couple more years until the club is sold and the new owner(s) decide how the club is run and where they see it going in 3-5 years etc. Get over your angst at the occasional poor performance and celebrate the good stuff because, there is far more good stuff going on currently than bad."

"""The grass isn’t always greener"" True. But there's jo guarantee that it's not either I'm fine with talks. But if they give him a contract before the end of the season it could bea huge mistake. A very short bad run could see us around 10th. If we end up roughly where we are now at thr end I'll fully understand another contract. Not that I'll be happy about it as I genuinely think stridten could produce something brilliant if he's given free reign like he had at leverkusen"

Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
"C&P Guardian Sport West Ham should not gamble: it‚Äôs time to extend David Moyes‚Äôs contract Jacob Steinberg West Ham would need a very good reason not to reward David Moyes‚Äôs fine work with a new contract. If they waver they only need to think back to how the Scot‚Äôs first spell at the London Stadium ended. Instead of embracing the stability offered by Moyes, West Ham went for the glamorous option. They appointed Manuel Pellegrini, gave the Chilean a huge budget and ended up sacking him after 18 months of inconsistency left the side in relegation trouble. The grass isn‚Äôt always greener. Moyes returned in Pellegrini‚Äôs place, preserved West Ham‚Äôs Premier League status and built a team with a hard-running identity. He finished sixth and seventh, bringing European football to east London for the first time since 2006. It has not always been plain sailing. West Ham‚Äôs league form dipped in 2022, though allowances can be made for their run to the last four of the Europa League, and Moyes‚Äôs position came under serious threat. He would have been fired if West Ham had lost to Fulham last April. Many fans had seen enough. Some have never taken to Moyes‚Äôs pragmatic approach and will jump at any chance to criticise him. Outsiders detect more than a whiff of ingratitude. Moyes is the man who led West Ham to their first trophy in 43 years. He charged down the touchline in Prague when Jarrod Bowen scored the winner against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final last June. Time to build the statue? Not quite. For much of last summer the talk was of tension between Moyes and West Ham‚Äôs new head of recruitment, Tim Steidten. Against that backdrop it is unsurprising that, until a few weeks ago, the general feeling was that West Ham would let Moyes walk away when his contract expires at the end of the season. There was a yearning for Steidten, previously at Bayer Leverkusen, to scour Europe and unearth the next Roberto De Zerbi. Only, Moyes has just taken West Ham into the last 16 of the Europa League. They have kicked on since selling Declan Rice to Arsenal last summer, rebuilding with the signings of Edson ?Ålvarez, Mohammed Kudus, Konstantinos Mavropanos and James Ward-Prowse. They go into Tuesday‚Äôs home game against Brighton in sixth, fresh from consecutive 2-0 wins over Arsenal and Manchester United. No wonder they are prepared to offer Moyes a two-and-a-half-year extension when talks over a deal are held this month. It is not a done deal. Moyes, who was criticised for rotating when West Ham went to Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and lost 5-1, could be forgiven for wondering if he wants two more seasons of supporters calling him too negative. It is less than a month since his side lost 5-0 at Fulham. There are times when West Ham look stilted in attack. But there is more than one way to play. When West Ham won at Arsenal last week it was impossible not to marvel at their defensive brilliance. Not every manager has to obsess over passing statistics. This season West Ham have beaten Chelsea, Tottenham, Brighton and Arsenal despite having under 30% possession. To some of Moyes‚Äôs critics, those wins are just freak occurrences. As if it is possible to pull them off without motivated players carrying out a good and experienced manager‚Äôs clever tactical plan. West Ham make a lot out of a little. While Ward-Prowse‚Äôs set pieces are a big part of the plan, they are not a route-one team. They can be devastating on the break and have flair. Lucas Paquet?° is one of the best players in the league. Bowen has been outstanding since moving up front. Kudus, whose goals and dribbling will be missed while he is with Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations, looks like a bargain at ¬£38m from Ajax. Of course, there will be a temptation to give those talents to a more expansive manager. Moyes is not perfect. Some of the games are dull and there are times when West Ham drop too deep. Strikers have found it tough in his system. Fans look enviously at the enterprising football played by Spurs under Ange Postecoglou, a manager snubbed by West Ham in the past. But if there is no obvious candidate there is no reason not to keep Moyes. He points out that West Ham do not have the same resources as the teams around them, so they have to find another way. He references his years at Everton and talks about building over time. The mind goes back to 2014-15 and a promising campaign fizzling out as West Ham let Sam Allardyce‚Äôs contract run down. Uncertainty is unhelpful. Moyes has pointed out that it could be a distraction for his players. He is gearing up for a strong second half to the season. The risk is the mood changing before the summer. West Ham could give Moyes a deal now, then watch results dip and the fans grow restless again. The squad lacks quality cover in key areas. What if injuries bite? What if they finish in mid-table? West Ham would wonder if they should have gambled. Even so Moyes is easily their best manager in the Premier League era. He has masterminded wins over big clubs and overseen some special nights in Europe. He secured legendary status after winning in Prague, an achievement that places him alongside Ron Greenwood and John Lyall in the club‚Äôs history. Moyes has earned more time. West Ham would have to be very sure that someone else could do a better job. They would be gambling if they let him go. They do not need another Pellegrini."
Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
"I posted this on the Moyes Out thread but more appropriate for this thread perhaps... I can't help but feel that because the board decided to appoint Tim Steidten as Technical Director, and Mark Noble Sporting Director these appointments were to remove control of these areas of the manager's job from Moyes. We can all see that we have a squad of around 14 players that get game time and the rest are just making up numbers. They can only be classed as failings by Moyes even though he bought them or should be coaching them to better standards. Youth team players don't even get look ins unless they cause a fuss about their contracts like Mubama and now goal scorer Callum Marshall. Apparently he wants away unless he sees a clear progression path. I suspect that the board appreciate that Moyes gets results but they see the dreadful football too. And they must be unhappy at the cost of Moyes falling out with non-favourite players which might be filled by youth players having a path to the first team. I am hoping that the ""discussions"" that are due to start over a new contract for Moyes will be about how these problem areas of Moyes management are addressed. Steidten and Noble need responsibility for their areas of activity - recruitment and youth - while Moyes gets to spend all his time overseeing the coaching of players given to him without his approval being required.. I really hope this is what is happening."

"Mike Oxsaw 1:57 Tue Jan 2 The problem with that 'forever and ever' comment is that has been the way it's been since 1888 and there doesn't seem to be anything in the Premier League changing that - in fact, it's getting worse. It's not about what Moyes or the FA Suits (indeed anyone in a suit) or Sky wants (or me either) it's just the way it is. The top ten all-time league placings are pretty much as they are now minus Sunderland (and Everton to a certain extent although how long that will continue when their new ground is ready is open to debate) but West Ham are now at least asking questions. I think if you asked fans around the country to name the PL's top ten teams - not on current form but just generally - we'd get a mention but we're still either the biggest small club or the smallest big club. I think they call it 'managing expectations'. No reason we can't exceed them but it's pointless saying we're the best when we're plainly not."
Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
Charles and russ and both good posts there Obviously we've got Brighton tonight and a full strength team should murder them. But I've got no enthusiasm to go tonight at all. This is why I'm moyes out. It just seems like a chore going some weeks I'd love to be proven wrong. And I could cone round to moyes if jlhe just stopped being so fucking stubborn. But he won't. And for the first time if we changed up managers as long as steidten is choosing and not sullivan I think we could actually improve. But let's also realise 6th is a bit of a misnomer. Chelsea snd man u and Newcastle Will improve with the resources they have.

Nicholson does a good job there and he doesn’t even mention the favouritism and the apparent phobia of the youth.

"If Moyes sets the club's public expectations below ever reaching the top 6, no wonder the media love him; he's giving them (and the suits in the game) exactly what they want - the same big 6 forever and ever, Amen."

"charleyfarley 1:34 Tue Jan 2 That's a pretty good summary from Nicholson. Some could argue he's being overly negative and unfair.... But its really hard to counter what he is saying. I like his comment: ""Sometimes it feels as if Moyes doesn’t want to succeed as it sets too much expectation. The Hammers need and deserve a progressive manager and it isn’t David Moyes."" I think that's my worry too and it does seem Moyes is always too keen to pull on the reigns and tell everyone not to get too excited. It does seem a bit of an inferiority complex Moyes has got. And I believe that does spread to the players and I fear that they drop their levels to retain Moyes expectations."

Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
"John Nicholson, him of football 365 who wrote we ate all the pies reckons:- David Moyes out! West Ham are sixth but only 'hitting par' with a talented squad On the surface, West Ham are having a good season; they are making excellent progress in Europe and are sixth in the league. But all the same there remain major doubts about David Moyes. Discount all European victories – they bloody should win those, they are like a top-flight team beating a fourth-tier side in terms of resources and to make out otherwise is dishonest. It’s not nothing but just set in the proper context. Their performances can be awful. The Liverpool game especially so in the League Cup, a trophy they could have won. Terrible. The fact is they have had some excellent players. Some say Moyes doesn’t deserve the likes of Jarrod Bowen and that he bails the team out. And that team is frequently set up too defensively. Moyes gets criticism in part because the media fellates him so much; ‘he doesn’t get the credit he deserves’ is a familiar call, especially from people who only give him credit. Moyes himself, despite the excellence of his squad, displays a kind of inferiority complex where West Ham are a tiny club battling against the odds. As if they were Hartlepool in the Conference and not a club that has spent many millions on players. As odd as this mind wipe might seem, West Ham are amongst the last few years’ highest spenders. They should be doing well. They are hitting par at the moment for one of Europe’s richest clubs with little chance or ambition of finishing higher than sixth. They are only sixth because they are the beneficiaries of Chelsea and Manchester United’s rubbishness. And would anyone be surprised if Moyes’ tactics eventually led them to finish 10th? Sometimes it feels as if Moyes doesn’t want to succeed as it sets too much expectation. The Hammers need and deserve a progressive manager and it isn’t David Moyes."

Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
"Strange one for me this. I see so many positives. 6th in the league. Most points in the league at this stage. 3rd season in Europe. In last 16 of Europa League. A more positive 4-3-3 formation being utilised. Recent wins over Man Utd and Arsenal. I mean, what's not to love? Even the harshest of Moyes critics could look at our current position and struggle to argue he doesn't deserve it. But the shadow of the negatives also looms large. The potential for Moyes to revert to type when Antonio returns. Throwing the Liverpool game. Moyes constant persistence of lowering expectations and maintaining 'our place' in the order of things. Inability to rotate squad efficiently. Inability to develop and integrate Academy players. Transfer dalliance. Stubborness and spiky attitude towards the fans when things are not clicking. Lack of in game influence. But then I look at other managers. Are any of them perfect? I suppose I could pick holes in all of them. Even Klopp and Guardiola. So what is it I want from him? I just want him to keep playing the 4-3-3 and stop being so negative and worrying about our opponents. Play the right way and when we lose, lose with some pride and some fight. No rolling over. And more importantly, I want him to stop holding us in 'our place'. As a club we need to develop and grow to the next level which needs to be realistically challenging for CL each season. Stop with the excuse that 'we are only little West Ham'. Have some vision and some foresight and start fucking dreaming big and go for it."
Re: Moyes being offered a new contract. FFS
So you don't think deciding to throw a cup QF is worthy of criticism? It hardly comes under the heading of criticising him for anything does it.. I praised him when we beat Wolves and Arsenal... I'm critical of him throwing a cup game and him thinking it's justified because we beat a team that have lost half of their games.
