Admin assistance required please
"A well known regular WHOer messaged me yesterday to ask if WHO had finally ceased to exist cos he's been unable to connect to it, and only got ""oops, we are unable to find that site"" etc. I told him it was working for me. This morning he sent me this: Tried connecting via Firefox & Edge on PC and Safari on IPad and continue to get a message stating the server can’t be found. Can you ask Admin if they have any ideas please? He's been around long enough to know to try wiping his knob on the screen, so I assume he's already done that."
Re: Admin assistance required please
I had 3 (THREE) mesages last week from WHO'ers abroad to ask if it's died.

I changed my DNS provider on my phone to one.one.one.one and it works. On my android phone it was Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Private DNS. Change from Automatic to Private DNS provider host name and enter one.one.one.one Other android devices might be slightly different.

"Stickleback 2:14 Sun Oct 29 Yeah, I now get the same, which is quite strange as I've had no issues logging in via that path before. I guess the next option is too geeky for many, and I don't think it's available for Android users, is to modify the hosts file on your computer/router to do the DNS conversion there instead. I'm led to believe, though, that the fundamental issue lies within the WHO server - a combination of too many user names - most of which have been dormant for a couple of decades or so - and too many large threads, but don't quote me on that. As such, because of the poor server performance, DNS hosts may be applying arbitrary restrictions to limit traffic likely to fail to connect, which would probably account for the apparent randomness in it all."

What happens when people use the site's IP address (94.76.246.88) directly?

Re: Admin assistance required please
It's a DNS problem. If I use 4G/5G Internet I can't get through. If I use local WiFi it works. Has to be the DNS provider that (in my case) vodafone uses.

I have ALWAYS been able to connect to this site from my work (God knows why they haven't yet blocked access to it lol) - BUT this week when I tried I got the 'Not Found' message - so something is wrong.

Sitting at Milan Airport on the way home from Athens and managed to access the site for only the second time in a couple of weeks. Once was logged onto Wi-Fi on a train this time using the WiFi at the airport. Have tried every other day using 3 devices. None worked.

"I realised the only way in to this site is to use the links in your history. My old account just died and I couldn't retrieve it, apparently all my 30 year WHO history disappeared, no record of me ever existing on here. Was no longer using the original email not that it would have made any difference as I didn't exist anymore. Tried creating a new account with my current email but never got the email from WHO to complete registration. Then used my spare email account, got the WHO email but when I entered the code to register it just kept refreshing and asking me for the code. Tried just logging in with new details which didn't work. Gave up thinking my WHO days were over but then yesterday I just tried logging in again with my new details and here I am. Has taken me weeks to get back."

Re: Admin assistance required please
"NorthBank kindly replied to a PM I sent him recently. He threw a few figures at me and I'm not surprised that the site is now how it is. However, he & Defjam are ""on the case"", and are working towards a solution. It won't be a quick fix, however, for a multitude of reasons, some of which have arisen since the site's last update (bonus point for naming the day), and now have to be taken into account. Even without those changes (in the law, mainly) it's still a bastard of a task. As an aside, how many of you are still using the same email address with which you first registered? I used a Hotmail address, and I'm fucked if I can remember the password or security questions to access it again. If any of you used a work address, or have changed e-mail provider, and no longer have access to that original account, then claiming your user name on a new site will be, let me say, a challenge. Patience, here, is a definite virtue."

Re: Admin assistance required please
All day I’ve not been able to open this site. Server error kept coming up until about 20 mins ago. I put it mainly down to the anger of people watching todays game from 17:45 and the server couldn’t cope.

Re: Admin assistance required please
"The error messages seem to have changed over the last couple of days. I suspect that the DNS platforms have noted the number of failures in accessing the site and have pushed the failure notification a level or two away from the access point. Basically means that the internet, possibly using AI, is assessing whether or not your request to access the site is likely to succeed and if it feels not, blocks the attempt earlier to stop it using bandwidth that fails to connect. A bit like shutting off a motorway slip road if they believe you won't be able to get to your intended destination. But, don't worry; there will be a proper expert along shortly to tell you the real reason."
