Admin assistance required please

Post Leonard Hatred »

"A well known regular WHOer messaged me yesterday to ask if WHO had finally ceased to exist cos he's been unable to connect to it, and only got ""oops, we are unable to find that site"" etc. I told him it was working for me. This morning he sent me this: Tried connecting via Firefox & Edge on PC and Safari on IPad and continue to get a message stating the server can’t be found. Can you ask Admin if they have any ideas please? He's been around long enough to know to try wiping his knob on the screen, so I assume he's already done that."

Wils Fix the WHO clock? That would be like the crows leaving the Tower of London. England would fall. I hadn't been able to get on WHO at all for several days on any browser or device whether on WiFi or data. But for some reason being on train wifi it's working.

"I mentioned on this thread I would set up a proxy of this site when I found time and here it is on a different domain I registered (note the .co.uk): https://www.westhamonline.co.uk/ TL;DR: should work better than http://www.westhamonline.net Long version for nerds: What this hopefully does is fix the connectivity issues people have been experiencing. It's using Cloudflare domain name servers which should be more reliable. It also provides encryption (https) which may have been causing people issues too as some networks/browsers won't let you view insecure sites anymore. It also optimises the site by compressing Javascript/CSS etc and sticks the whole thing behind Cloudflares CDN (Content Delivery Network). This should speed it up a bit for most people. **** What it won't fix (although it could alleviate it a bit) is the slow loading because of the database. So the footballs threads during matches may still be a bit slow, but hopefully not as slow if most of you use this rather than the .net **** I realise I have done this without permission from people who own it. But if this does work for people and improve things I can do more. If people are happy it allows us to incept the HTML/CSS and alter it. Which gets around no-one having access to the website. The list things this makes possible: Fix the clock time Change the outdate images. Modernise the look and feel etc Anyway. DM me if this new link doesn't fix things for you and I will look into it."

The only way I can view this site is on my iPhone. Switch to private viewing in the Safari app and it seems to be working fine.

"I always seem to be able to log on no problem. It’s slow at times though. Could it be a bandwidth issue, seeing as Blighty is fast becoming a 2nd world country perhaps it’s an infrastructure issue in parts of the country."

"RichyP - it may be down to how your company handles DNS requests; they could have an internal DNS server on the LAN which has yet to be brought into line with the rest of the internet. It would be quite unusual for this to be the case though as DNS changes propagate automatically and are rarely out of sync for anything longer than a day. Basic ""ping: & ""traceroute/tracert"" commands suggest that the path to the server is fine and the problem lies beyond that. There seems to be 3 different error messages (in Firefox), none of which are of any real use; I also keep getting asked to log in fairly frequently after time-outs in post attempts, but as nobody else has mentioned that happening I suspect it's just me and the host has installed a cսnt detector on the server, which is clearly working just fine..."

"I'm having the same issue, the site stopped working on my ipad, personal iphone, work iphone and work laptop a coupe of weeks ago. Just get a message saying unable to reach server and i thought it had been taken down. Tried all devices on both 4G and my home wifi but it made no difference. Obviously, I use IOS/Safari on my apple devices and I use MS as my operating system and Edge or Chrome as my browser on my work laptop. Nothing worked, until i came into the office today and connected to my companies LAN using the same work laptop and Edge as my browser, the site is working for for the for the time in a couple of weeks Something is obviously different being connected to the company network but i have no idea what and can't raise it with the IT team!"

"It's possible to force Firefox to work with an http:// only site - I've had to do so for my local server access and this site. Can't remember whether the option is an option under Security Settings (accessed by clicking the ""Box of 3 lines in the top right hand corner of the window, then the ""Settings"" option) or via the about:config page - maybe both, but the latter is wandering too far into Geeksville for many. If it works, the little padlock in the browser address bar will have a red line through it."

"""The Stoat An error occurred during a connection to www.westhamonline.net. Peer using unsupported version of security protocol. Error code: SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION"" SSL is encryption. (https). This website is just http. Sounds like your browser or network is trying to force https and that's why it's failing. To be fair, most of the internet is now in https, so it's not suprising either your browser or networks is doing this. It's not difficult to upgrade this site to http either. As no one has access to this site, I'll see if I can set up some proxy url in https that will get around the problem. Probably wont be a for a couple of weeks until I get the time. Unless someone else wants to have a go at it."
