Antonio: can we do any better?

Post camel-with-3-humps »

"Let's be honest, he's poor frequently nowadays. So many attacks break down on his clumsy play. Questions: Should he stay in the team? If not, what are the options?"

"If its not a tap in / header from a set-piece then or a turn and shoot in open play, then its not a goal. Except against Fulham last season where him falling over made 3 of them fall over. He has always been a dreadful footballer. Maguire manages him best out of all the centre halves. Just let him have the ball and run. Goal kick."

"Won’t ever have a bad word for Antonio, great servant and some memorable moments and despite technical limitations worked his way up from non league to make a good career at the top level of the game. This is a season too far. Not his fault but he needs to accept a place on the bench or impact sub role preferably in a wide role. One of Moyes biggest mistakes or oversight or incompetence has been his lack of understanding and know how relating to the attacking side of the game and what makes a good attacker. Combine that with an owner who has bought 50 failed forwards and it’s no wonder we have a mess"

"At his best he was always streaky, yet he has never, ever had competition because Moyes only has one way of playing. It's actually ridiculous that he remains number 1 this year when his legs have gone and pace and strength were his only attributes"

"twoleftfeet Most of us would give them a go but no ducking way Moyes will give either of them a proper chance, never going to happen. Mubama (as said below) rumoured to have unsurprisingly rejected a contract offer. Say what you want about Ngakia, Ashby, Perkins and what you think their potential is, the fact is we tried to keep them all and none of them wanted to stay. That defeats the object of having a youth set up if they are going to be allowed to progress into the first team."

"He was excellent in his first few seasons at Upton Park - used to love watching him. A threat in the air, pace that most defenders couldn’t match and just seemed quite humble and honoured to be playing for us. It all started going downhill with that ridiculous accident whilst he dressed up as a snowman. Got him a lot more attention and he started believing his own hype a bit too much. A shadow of the player he once was. He never had technique or much of a footballing brain (I’ve still not forgotten the 2 basic errors in two separate games vs. Palace), but at least he would cause havoc and create one or two things a game with his pace and strength. That’s nearly all gone now, and we just get to see him giving the ball away more often than not or just falling over at the slightest touch."

"Antonio has been superb for us over the years but he's a shadow of the player he was, he's lost that burst of acceleration and his clumsiness is now becoming more prevalent and farcical. The fact that the idiot in charge thought we could get by this season with Antonio & Ings leading the line is a fucking joke."

Time to start using Marshall or Mubama. Moyes often boasts about him being the one to give Rooney his debut at 16 but his record with blooding youngsters is pretty poor with us.

"I've been critical of him recently, and maybe that is just an expression of how bad the team has been for a while. That being said, he's too old to make the impact he used to, often falls over at the slightest touch and is on a completely different wave length to his team mates. I'd have a lot more time for him if he didn't do those stupid podcasts and have in jokes with opposing team players about what goal celebration he'll do if he scores. In other news, I see that Lingard's move to SA has fallen through. I fully expect to see Moyes chasing him again."

"Let’s be honest. We create very little for him. Feeds off scraps a majority of the time. But in those moments me do give him something to feed off, if he has more than one second to think about it, he panics and fucks it."

"I am saying, quite confidentally, that Adama Traore would have been better for us up front on Sunday than Antonio who did absolutely fuck all. It is an indictmant to what Antonio has become. Because, to be fair, most professional strikers could have performed at least to the level that Antonio did"

There’s not much difference between Adama and Antonio. Certainly not enough to start attacking posters

"Are you seriously saying that Adama Traore is better than Antonio? Do you even realise what Antonio has given us over the years? Like it or not, he’s been the consistent up front during arguably our most successful period in recent history. You can’t do that with someone ‘shit’ up front. Antonio has never been the greatest striker in the world, but the disrespect on here is truly unbelievable. Adama fucking Traore!"

"Adama Traore was available on a free this summer and Wolves snapped him up. I don't think he's amazing, but he's as close as you'll get to Antonio without being quite as shit."

The bloke has become a joke now. He'd do well to play regularly in League 1.
