"'What about mackerel with custard? "" When I get the courage up, I'm going to try and recreate the ancient Roman dish of pears in garum* and custard. *Garum = rotten/fermented fish sauce"

"Coffee, dunno, I always had herring down as jewish or scandi food. I do love kippers on toast or a decent herring salad, as long as ALL bones are removed"

"The herring is king in Poland as well, mind you I find the recipes a little over-elaborate - all that cream, cheese, beetroot and general faffing around. The best of course comes from Holland and Denmark and I'm happy to say I just had me some top-notch herring at the market in Maasticht on a paper plate with nothing more than chopped raw ONION."

"Rios Surely it's the herring? What's a traditional English breakfast without kippers with a poached egg or two? Nothing. Funnily enough, I had kippers yesterday for the first time in about 30 years. Absolutely delicious. Then there's the rollmop, which shows the mighty herring's versatility. (I wonder where the word rollmop came from?) Hammer and Pickle 8:45 Thu Nov 2 Agreed!"

"Mackerel is the daddy of fish (along with cod). And its pretty much our national fish. As another said below, its perfect in Kedgeree, but would have to be small flakes in an omelette as it has a fairly strong taste"

"As a youngster when I first left home, my cooking skills were appalling. Just wanted to be out and about after work, and mackerel formed part of one of my staples. Soggy, watery shell shaped pasta, tin of mackerel in tomato sauce, half a tin of uncooked processed peas, more tomato sauce. Wallop."

If you’re in the Andes post plane crash freezing and starving awaiting rescue and it appears on a silver platter then……maybe yes.

Be grateful your paths have never crossed and the North Korean organ bank still hasn’t benefitted from what would ensue.
