DAILY RECORD A Green Brigade banner was unfurled by Celtic fans in Dingwall despite the controversial ultras group on a club ban from home and away games. Rangers boss Philippe Clement wants to tie up Ibrox youngster Ross McCausland on a new contract. Guardian Nathan Collins seals thrilling comeback for Brentford against West Ham Jacob Steinberg at the Gtech Community Stadium It would not have felt right if Neal Maupay‚Äôs first goal in 35 appearances had not come in a Brentford win. After all, it is what they do against West Ham, whose third consecutive league defeat was not only because of their wastefulness when they were dominating the first half. If David Moyes found himself struggling to understand how a performance featuring a stunning goal from Mohammed Kudus had not yielded a reward, he only had to look at his team ceding the initiative during yet another flat second half. It is not enough to point at Michail Antonio failing to convert an open goal when West Ham led 2-1. One miss does not excuse this collective failure. It was the latest example of West Ham floundering after sitting on a lead. They were unambitious, their threat on the counterattack nonexistent, but it was a misguided plan. It could not work with Kurt Zouma absent in defence and the suspended Edson ?Ålvarez unable to provide security in defensive midfield. Brentford, who took ninth place from Moyes‚Äôs side with their third straight win, took advantage. Mathias Jensen was outstanding in midfield. Bryan Mbeumo was a constant menace and Brentford soared thanks to their aerial power, equalising through Konstantinos Mavropanos‚Äôs own goal before Nathan Collins headed in his first goal for the club. ‚ÄúEvery win in the Premier League feels fantastic,‚Äù Thomas Frank said. ‚ÄúA good performance makes me a happy man. I love my team. Second half we didn‚Äôt look back.‚Äù The opening period was more of a struggle for Brentford, so it was a surprise when they went ahead. Mind you, something about facing West Ham seems to turn Maupay into Erling Haaland. The striker‚Äôs previous goal had come against them and Brentford sensed it would be their day when he nodded home after 11 minutes. Moyes fumed at the defending, with West Ham sliced apart on the right. Yoane Wissa shot, Vladimir Coufal blocked and Tomas Soucek‚Äôs clearance dropped to Frank Onyeka, whose wayward effort was diverted past Alphonse Areola by Maupay. West Ham‚Äôs response was strong. They were without Lucas Paquet?°, so often their creative hub, and Moyes adapted. The visitors were dangerous with Jarrod Bowen joining Antonio up front. Brentford were uncomfortable. Antonio made the equaliser with a cross from the left. Kudus, contorting his body, sent an acrobatic volley beyond Mark Flekken. Kudus came alive after his goal, repeatedly evading Vitaly Janelt, filling in at left-back with Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry absent. West Ham believed and Brentford were pierced when Sa?Ød Benrahma crossed from the left. Kudus hit the woodwork but Bowen gobbled up the rebound for his seventh goal of the season. The goal survived a VAR check for handball and West Ham should have led 3-1 when Kudus and Bowen combined again, only for Antonio to shoot wide when Benrahma seemed better placed. Given hope, Brentford immediately threatened, Mbeumo firing two efforts just wide. ‚ÄúHalf-time was big for us,‚Äù said Moyes, whose side have dropped into the bottom half. ‚ÄúComing out it was really important we got the third goal. If we‚Äôd have been defensively strong we‚Äôd have got opportunities. We didn‚Äôt stop Brentford getting momentum. They keep you under pressure. We‚Äôre not talking about anything weird and wonderful. If I‚Äôd been a player I‚Äôd have been disgusted with myself.‚Äù West Ham wilted. Emerson Palmieri, who received no protection from Benrahma, was vulnerable at left-back. In midfield Soucek and James Ward-Prowse were not close enough to Jensen as he threaded clever balls into the attack. Moyes highlighted a lack of concentration as he explained his side‚Äôs repeated habit of conceding shortly after half-time. Nayef Aguerd needlessly conceded a corner and West Ham failed to switch on when Brentford took it short. Mbeumo produced a vicious cross, Areola stayed on his line and Mavropanos headed into his own net. West Ham‚Äôs earlier zest was gone. Maupay had a shot blocked and Jensen tightened his grip. With 69 minutes gone, the Dane moved right and whipped in a beautiful cross. Nobody challenged Collins as he sent a firm header past Areola. Brentford, unbeaten in 14 London derbies, deserved their second home win of the season. They keep overwhelming West Ham. The Athletic West Ham lose to Brentford yet again thanks to a lack of aerial prowess By Michael Cox How many matches does it take before you can reasonably classify an opponent as a club‚Äôs ‚Äòbogey team‚Äô? It probably works on a sliding scale according to the strength of the opposition, but in this case, five matches is surely enough. It‚Äôs not simply that West Ham haven‚Äôt beaten Brentford in five Premier League meetings, but that they haven‚Äôt collected a single point against them. They‚Äôve lost 2-1 and 2-0 in their two meetings at the London Stadium, and when travelling across London to the Gtech Community Stadium, they‚Äôve been defeated 2-0, 2-0 and now 3-2. And, of course, we aren‚Äôt talking about Premier League giants here. Before those matches, Brentford were a lower-league team, and these two sides had been in the same division just once in 60 seasons. They feel like they should be in different worlds, and yet five times in a row now ‚Äî notwithstanding an FA Cup win last season against a heavily rotated Bees side ‚Äî Brentford have defeated West Ham. To put that into context, this is only the second time in the Premier League era that a side has been promoted and then won their first five matches against the same opponent. Even that doesn‚Äôt quite compare, as that was Blackburn Rovers‚Äô wins against Nottingham Forest in the early to mid-1990s. Not only were Blackburn champions midway through that run, and therefore somewhat more difficult opponents than Brentford, it also takes into account two separate Forest stints in the top flight, as they were relegated at the end of 1992-93. So, in other words, no Premier League club has ever encountered such problems against a promoted side as consistently as West Ham have against Brentford. David Moyes has a reputation for struggling to get the better of the Premier League‚Äôs big boys away from home. But this should be more of a concern, because it suggests that West Ham can‚Äôt assert their football on teams when they‚Äôre given licence to dominate. It also suggests that West Ham can‚Äôt cope with Brentford‚Äôs strengths. You know what you‚Äôre going to get against Brentford. With all due respect to their deep midfielders Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen, both talented in possession, Brentford aren‚Äôt overwhelmingly creative on the ball, and basically cause problems in two ways. They offer speed on the break, chiefly through Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo. And they offer a major threat from set pieces. And, essentially, West Ham have suffered in both ways. In two of their previous four defeats, the scorers have been Wissa and Mbeumo. Today, though, they simply weren‚Äôt able to defend balls into the box. The first concession came when Neal Maupay scored his first goal in 35 games after a scrappy penalty box situation, with Moyes describing his side‚Äôs defending as ‚ÄúKeystone Kops‚Äù after the game ‚Äî an old-school cliche for an old-school goal. The second concession reflected badly on both centre-backs ‚Äî first Nayef Aguerd conceded a corner unnecessarily under no pressure at all, and then Konstantinos Mavropanos headed into his own net from the resulting ball into the box. And the third concession came in the second phase of a corner situation, when Brentford‚Äôs tactic was just so obvious: four men waiting at the far post, creating an overload, just waiting for a deep delivery. Yes, West Ham need to have players stationed at the near post to guard against flick-ons, but you could see the danger coming a mile off. Eventually, the cross came from Jensen, and Nathan Collins was there to power home, in precisely the manner Brentford manager Thomas Frank would have expected. ‚ÄúThey‚Äôre really good at their style,‚Äù Moyes said afterwards. ‚ÄúThey‚Äôve got good players as well, but they kept the pressure on, they crossed it, they put the ball into the box‚Ķ so were weren‚Äôt talking about anything that was absolutely weird and wonderful. But we found that we‚Äôve not dealt with things that, actually, as a player, I‚Äôd have been disgusted with myself if I‚Äôd not been able to deal with them much better. ‚ÄúThat‚Äôs why I‚Äôm annoyed, that I‚Äôve come here and (we‚Äôve) not been able to defend that. I think today is the sort of game where you have to stand up and deal with it at Brentford. How can you win if you‚Äôre not going to deal well enough with those moments?‚Äù And it just doesn‚Äôt feel like a Moyes side should struggle in these situations. Granted, they were without their best header of the ball in Kurt Zouma. They could have done with Edson Alvarez too. But then Brentford were without their best penalty box player, Ivan Toney, and played the somewhat more diminutive Maupay. He causes most opponents problems with his speed and tenacity in the channels, so if he‚Äôs scoring a header against you, your centre-backs have done something wrong. Moyes‚Äô teams tend to have their limitations in terms of dominating matches and featuring playmakers who can make the difference with individual brilliance ‚Äî although Mohammed Kudus was excellent, scoring a brilliant acrobatic equaliser and being involved in the second. But one of West Ham‚Äôs limitations should not be defending high balls. You once excused that of technical, possession-based teams ‚Äî but now even Manchester City and Arsenal are loading up on centre-backs who dominate in the air, as well as being able to pass. Brentford saw out the game by introducing Ben Mee, the club‚Äôs player of the year last season, as a stoppage-time substitute, a bonus centre-back. In three minutes on the pitch, Mee managed to clear three crosses, each of which prompted the Brentford fans to bellow ‚ÄúMeeeee‚Äù around the ground. How West Ham needed someone who could do that. As Mee headed away each cross, West Ham‚Äôs fans headed for the exits. OS Report & Reaction: U21s score four in Liverpool win Liverpool U21s 0-4 West Ham United U21s Premier League 2, Liverpool Training Centre, Saturday 4 November, 2pm West Ham United U21s added Liverpool U21s to an impressive list of wins over the last eight days. Their third straight victory - and clean sheet too - saw the Irons leave Merseyside with all three points, as a stunning attacking performance unfolded against the Reds. A clinical counter gave West Ham the opening goal when Callum Marshall finished a well-worked move after 13 minutes. Marshall would add his second of the afternoon on the hour, taking his season tally to 17 goals in all competitions, after Junior Robinson‚Äôs knockdown from Regan Clayton‚Äôs cross left the No9 with a tap-in. Patrick Kelly then dinked the on-rushing Liverpool goalkeeper to leave Gideon Kodua with an empty goal to add the Irons‚Äô third just three minutes later. And buoyed on by a couple of impressive saves from goalkeeper Jacob Knightbridge, Earthy then made in four, with a neat swivel and turn 17 minutes from time, after a mistake from the Liverpool keeper. Earthy‚Äôs goal took the Irons to nine goals in their last two PL2 games and saw an unbeaten run extend to eleven games. The U21s move to second in the PL2 table with their fifth league win of the season. West Ham United U21s: Knightbridge, Robinson (Chesters 65), Casey (Laing 69), Forbes, Luizao (Moore 72), Clayton, Orford, Kelly, Kodua (Scarles 66), Marshall, Earthy Subs not used: Terry (GK) Goals: Marshall 13 60, Kodua 63, Earthy 74 Prenderville praises brilliant Hammers It was another dominant showing from the U21s on Saturday afternoon. An even first half yes, but the Irons dominated in the second and scored three goals in 14 minutes to take the game away from their opponents. As such, Gerard Prenderville was delighted with the performance and full of plaudits for his side after a third win in eight days. The U21s assistant coach said: ‚ÄúIt has been a good week but a long one with three games. The players had to deal with that, and it was really good and impressive again. All the boys have played their part [over the week]. ‚ÄúThey work so hard on the training pitch, in the analysis room, and the gym. There‚Äôs a real togetherness in this group.‚Äù Prenderville picked out an impressive front three of Gideon Kodua, George Earthy, and Callum Marshall, although he also praised a dominant defence, who secured their third clean sheet in eight days. ‚ÄúFor me, it was about the defensive players today,‚Äù he added. ‚ÄúIt was a real captain‚Äôs performance from Michael [Forbes] and Jacob [Knightbridge] made a few good saves too. ‚ÄúThe communication to the front line from the back to keep pressing was really good and yes we had a lot of goals today, but it‚Äôs about the whole squad and team, who backed up those attacking players.‚Äù Up next West Ham United U21s return to EFL Trophy action on Tuesday away to EFL League One outfit Cheltenham Town. The Hammers are into the last 32 but will seek to secure top spot in Group H. Kick-off is at 7.30pm."
