Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"I agree they should be kicked out of the league immediately. Losing those six clubs could well bring a breath of fresh air to English football and make it competitive and interesting again knowing anyone, including West Ham United, could win the league every season. It would also make us by far the biggest club in London playing in the Premier League. Bring it on."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Why would they decide to wait until the end of the season to kick them out? Do it now.

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Bungo 11:22 Tue Apr 20 Schalke were rumoured to be one. A rich club but are rock bottom of the German league so would probably jump at the chance at competing in this.

"Romford boy, that is the action that best suits English football. Let the big six go and play in their own league whilst the rest of us carry on as before. Irrespective of whether it gives WHU a place in the CL it will be a breath of fresh air to the game in this country."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"I can remember when there were the first murmurings of the European Cup changing format from what used to be a straight forward knockout competition. IIRC it was when Red Star Belgrade got through to the final and that pissed off the Real Madrids etc of the competition, idea being that if the format was changed and clubs had to play more games to get to the final, then there'd be less chance of the likes of Red Star reaching it and the more likely scenario of the semis on being the sole domain of the elite clubs. That's what led to the hundreds of pointless and meaningless European games since. The answer now is apparently come up with something even worse."

"Pedro 11:03 Tue Apr 20 How will ""Brand PL"" be enhanced by knowing, before a ball is even kicked each season, before the fixtures are even out, that 5 teams (that's a quarter of the league) have already qualified for the prime competition in Europe? Why would you even bother watching?"
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Manchester United share price went up yesterday by about 7%. That’s why there’s no going back. Either the ESL replaces the CL or the ESL replaces the PL. Take your pick. Steve Parish understands where this is going.

"147man 10:45 Tue Apr 20 Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !! From Spurs forum Not for me. This is our West Ham moment, they moved from Upton Park to Stratford into a soulless bowl that will forever be a giant shithole devoid of history or real football culture no matter what goes on on the pitch. This is our version of it if it goes through. That supporter of a team that also moved from their traditional ground to a soulless bowl has a point you know."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Like a lot of older supporters I have totally fell out of love with the game so cant honesty say I will feel it like others if it happens as a break up only hurts if your in love . The whole bubble had to burst one day and with the lower clubs like Grimsby Town Lincoln etc etc where some players are on a good wage at £2/3000 a week (yes they are and have been for many years) pleading like beggars on the street is a bit rich when many workers are earning just £10/12 a hour paying to watch them.
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Mike do you know how much the champs league rights cost......govt wont buy them when they wont give NHS workers a payrise.........they also wont put them on free to air channels when whoever buys them is doing so for the advertising revenue
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"One thing I will give these clubs is the acknowledgement that the current Champions League setup (and the new one proposed) is a load of old wank with too many meaningless games being played. It strikes me a compromise could be reached (if it was actually a compromise they wanted). The very boundary I could see that would not be totally distasteful would be something like: An 'ESL' of 14 teams split into two groups - 10 of which qualify from the strongest leagues by virtue of league position straight to the league stage. The remaining 4 qualify via straight knock out pre the league stage. With SF and F post league. Money is heavily weighted towards the league stage, and then a portion of the money of the whole tournament is distributed based on the UEFA coefficient to the top 10 whether in the tournament or not that recognises their contribution to the prestige of the event historically. That gives the safety net for a period unless they regularly stop qualifying and their coefficient slips away through sustained under performance, ensures that throughout you have to have on field success to be in the tournament, and minimises the number of games against relative minnows for the biggest clubs in the pre-league stage. 2 from England, 2 from Spain, 2 from Italy, 1 from France, 1 from Portugal, 1 from Germany and the team with highest remaining coefficient across the leagues that qualified or the previous season's Europa cup winner, go straight to the League. Knockout then seeded by coefficient rating (so you don't end up with two big club under performers knocking each other out in an early round) Could pick that leagues that contribute to the automatic qualification for league stage based on combined coefficient so there is scope for change over time (eg if Germany get stronger than Italy) However this all assumes it really is about these big clubs wanting a bigger share of the revenue because of their prestige, when in reality it's just rich owners wanting to de-risk their investments so the revenue stream is guaranteed no matter what they do. You could actually see these clubs drop back off of it, as if the revenue is guaranteed without performance, the need to keep buying the biggest players and doling out the cash slides away as it's no longer about performance. That way they can keep the revenue by investing the bare minimum each season."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Can sort of see Steve Parish’s argument. They can’t just chuck them out as Premiwr League as a brand is less without them. That means Sky will pay less and less money filtered down etc etc. That said with the damage being done to the brand now anyway they may be better without them! In terms of the Greed league; those “fans” in Asia and America where this super league will be marketed and all the games played will only be interested in Barcelona / Real / Liverpool and Man Utd Anyone else is literally there to make up numbers. Man City have never even won a European trophy (I think!). They have no history of note. A few years back foreign players referred to Manchester United as just Manchester which said it all.

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"GSP, I gather Brady met with a supporters group yesterday prior to the 14 'nobodys' meeting today. Apparently she stated that West Ham are totally opposed to the plan of 6 'big boys'. Several clubs have had points deducted over the past few years, I can't remember why but surely nothing compares to 6 clubs planning behind closed doors to de-stabilise top flight football in this country and to seek to take control from the current authorities. The reasons arrogance and greed, this must be sorted once and for all with a clear message sent out. Immediately deduct a minimum of 10 points from each of them, Chelsea thrown out of FA Cup final which should be a repeat of the semi Leicester v Southampton. Finally kick them out of the premiership at the end of the season whilst denying them entry to any of the domestic tournaments. If they want to return to domestic tournaments they can start in the National League."
