Football Super league rumours yet again !!

Post ted fenton »

"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

"Not sure how the break-away will be financed? Maybe the games will go to tender and Sky, BT, Amazon, etc will bid for them. Surely the break-away clubs must have sounded the broadcasters out."

Will some chairman who are happy with staying in the PL as a gravy train and not bothered about success other than remaining in it want to kick out those that attract the revenue

"You're on a different planet if you think football players won't fuck their countries off for double money. ""That's right Mr Sterling, don't take the £500,000 per week to play a few games season against the world's best, come and sign for West Ham for £50,000, you won't look back what with that World Cup qualifier against San Marino round the corner..."""

Before this playing for Man U (for example) gave you top ( ish) football and international football. This challenges that and will establish a new mentality of absolute mercenaries and players with a broad integrity. I’m sure many players will go for the money. They might not be the best.

"Man City and Chelsea are super clubs because they had outside investment. That investment got them better players and the PL/Sky sold that product. Same as PSG did and Monaco a few years back in the French League. Whats to stop the PL doing that again? Before the PL there was only Liverpool and Man U that could be classed as super clubs at all. I dont think leagues are successful because of the clubs alone. Sky had a massive part to play in the revolution of broadcasting. I think they could do it again. Even adding the Scottish teams etc.. What Ive noticed about football, is that it will always have a local connection. Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish fans etc.. still enjoy their leagues and love their clubs. Regardless of whether they play Madrid or not. Let them fuck off really. I think wed have a bette more enjoyable league without the stupid amount of money that only some clubs can spend."

Darby_ 7:14 Mon Apr 19 Will they ask to leave though? These clubs will be able to pay even more ridiculous wages. The fact that hardly any players have spoke out against it yet speaks volumes.

"I have my doubts whether this will go ahead. I don't think these yanks and Saudis really understand football, and they don't understand that most of their players will be unwilling to abandon playing for their country, and will instead simply ask to leave the clubs. But it'd be great if the authorities enforced a German-styled club model. It'd be a genuinely great turning point in football."

"Full Claret, the easiest way would be to amalgamate the whole league systems. The lower the division, the more regional it becomes with promotion and relegation similar to the Conference north and south. That way, you'd end up with Dagenham against Arbroath and Bromley away to Stenhousemuir. They've already sort of experimented with one of their cup competitions, with teams from Scotland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland and Ireland competing."

"FCJ - it wouldn't have to destroy Scottish football. Scotland's clubs would simply be merged into a UK-wide league system. But, being realistic, only four or five would be top-level. You'd still find others in the Championship, and leagues 1,2 (and possibly a new League 3). That could actually galvanise Scottish club football, which is a moribund mess at the moment."

"No need to erase their results as has been suggested, simply deduct 10 points from all six of them! The actions these arrogant sods have taken to destroy the premiership and all other competitions deserve nothing less. If they don't succeed this time they will be back again so time the people who allegedly 'run' the game showed some courage and gave the lot of them something to remember!"

"It might also end this ludicrous 'dance' that the sulkish 'Big6' do every few seasons when they threaten to throw their (rather large) toys out of their pram. Let 'em go - but have a plan to make English/British football a decent experience again. Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Hibs - and safe standing - are a genuine chance to breathe new life into this tiresome, money-obsessed shite."

"Mike Oxsaw 6:39 Mon Apr 19 The meeting of the 14 tomorrow will obviously be pivotal. I can't see how they can do anything other than expel the 6. If they let them stay the discrepancy in income will be so vast that the PL will quickly become even more unbalanced than it is now. Plus they will play their 2nd XI in any case either side of their midweek big games, so either way it is unrealistic and unworkable."

So you would fix the mess left of English football by destroying Scottish football?

"cup of tea 6:27 Mon Apr 19 (The saying ""you cant have your cake and eat it"" needs to be firmly adhered to and the clubs wanting in on this bollocks should simply be banned from all domestic league and cup competition at the earliest opportunity). I agree with all of that, but have to point out that the Unibomber was right, about quite a few things, to be fair. In this case I mean he was right to say that the expression is supposed to be ""You can't eat your cake and have it."""

"I do like Rangers and I'm pleased as punch they're doing well. And you're right, that feeling would disappear the minute we shared a league. Knowing terrorist supporting Celtic fans were getting chased all over England would fill me with joy though."
