May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.
Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

Latest noises from Potter is that we may not be bring anyone in for that midfield? Reflecting the Fernandes deal being a non starter.
Potter just announced his own death sentence. Get the lad from Lille at least because without an injection of pace and physicality in that central midfield we are highly unlikely to see any improvemeng. Potter can be removed at the end of the season without compensation but after hearing this I foresee him being gone by xmas with us in or just above the relegation zone.
It'll be Sullivan saying no if that's the case, because he can't shift any of the shit already in the squad. Not a chance that Potter actually thinks we don't need anyone.

I have a feeling Potter is going to do a Moyes with him and just not use him unless he's simply got no-one else.
Can't see that myself. Potter knows 100% that he's on very thin ice and desperately needs to improve on last season so he'll be playing whoever can help him achieve that. Absolutely no point in trying to send a message to the chairman that he needs to sign his own players when there's a very good chance that he'll be out of a job before the next transfer window. And if he gets sacked mid season there's very little hope of him getting a top flight job again for a good while, so he won't be doing any cutting his nose to spite his face.
I'm not so sure. I think the rest of the league knows the ridiculous constraints of working under Sullivan and I very much doubt he'd be out of work for long at all, to be honest. Don't forget it was a self imposed spell out of the game rather than no job offers.
And I don't think Callum Wilson is the key to improving anything whatsoever aside from the workload of the physio team. He'd have a completely valid argument it's better for the club to play Marshall over Wilson unless Wilson surprises us all massively, which he almost certainly won't. No way is he becoming our starter on merit. If Wilson is in the team, then we have serious problems- for about 20 minutes before he injures himself and spends three months out and we end up with Paqueta or Guilherme up front.
Sullivan is an utter idiot for forcing him into this club.

More likely that he didn't play because he'd only done his first pre-season training session a few days before the match. Players normally have 1-2 weeks training before playing matches. I would have thought that he could have trained with Newcastle until he found a new club but apparently he preferred to spend the summer in the US doing media punditry for the Club World Cup

. Expect him to be on the bench next weekend though.
For sure, that's why I asked if he was really injured or not. I expected him to take a while without having a proper pre-season which was laughable enough but if he was genuinely injured as well, it makes the signing more of a joke than it already was.

I’m amazed no one has come in for Irving.
Including us! As in we hardly played him and when he has been given scraps he's looked tidy.

I’m amazed no one has come in for Irving. He seems a good lad, and is definitely Championship quality at the very least. Also, I think he earns less than me, so wages shouldn’t be an issue. Baffling.

Irving is a strange one. I like him, he's decent and I'm surprised championship clubs haven't been sniffing around. 3.5m is a steal. Think of some of the dogshit west ham brought in over the years for 6,7,8 times that amount.
True. I'd have thought he'd be a very solid addition for someone. Not necessarily a starter but very good value. However it's probably better for him to go and play for Celtic

Celtic offered a couple of million then upped it to £3m or £3.5m
Full Scottish international… is that the price these days?

I hope you're right, but everything about the signing feels wrong. His age, his last season, his injury record, our record with injuries to strikers.
He was a superb player, who knows, we might get lucky. Can't see it personally.

Certainly he cannot be match fit, or he'd have been on the bench. I have a feeling Potter is going to do a Moyes with him and just not use him unless he's simply got no-one else. It also wouldn't completely surprise me if Sullivan actually asks/asked Potter to use Wilson as little as possible as well given the money it'll cost. That sort of insanity is what comes to mind when you consider how this club is run and what's happened in the past with players who have clauses based on financials in their contracts. Get a guy in who no-one wanted in the first place and then ask the manager not to play him.

He started 2 games last season.
And those two were away to Liverpool and Arsenal. He did also start one FA cup game vs Birmingham, which he scored in. Bit harsh to judge him based on what amounted to just 5 full games, spread out over 22. Half of them 22 games either only had a few minutes left to run or were already over as a competition with either side being 3+ goals up.
As for his age, Defoe and Vardy both had 15 goal seasons twice in a row at 33 & 34 years of age, not playing for top clubs.
All that said, it seems so unlikely that he'll be available much because of his injury record that you know it's going to make the manager's job more difficult. Even if he starts a few games and does well it'll probably mean that Fullkrug loses his place, which won't help his form and confidence when he has to step in again come injury time (and that's if he's fit himself, which isn't a given). It wouldn't be a surprise at all to see both strikers spend most of the season in the physio room or catching up with fitness. We might have been better off with a less prolific scorer who can at least be relied upon to likely be available.

I would find it funny if Wilson is injured for the first proper game of the season.
Like, no one saw that one coming.

Wilson is the same failed and tested formula that the clubs owners repeat year after year.
For the club, it is the cheaper alternative to give him a shot than to seriously invest in the ST department.
His last pay day. Knows that with lack of competition there is a hi likelihood he will be relied upon this season. Probably be the fittest he has ever been and will chip in with a few goals but that is as good as it gets.
Hoping Fullkrug can stay fit as feel as he may have a big season for us. We need him to or we are fucked.
No point playing Fullkrug without someone alongside him.
Have you been following pre-season?

Well, cheaper short term with no up front fee and if he doesn't ever get on the pitch but apparently an absolute money drain if he does, whether he does or does not score. A very short sighted transfer when what we are spunking on prospective wage bonuses/structure could absolutely have gone toward a young striker with a fee, but far lower wages, far more promise and far more positive long tern benefit for us.
This was a ridiculous transfer for a club like ours to take. The only winners are probably Sullivan and Salthouse, and Wilson IF he gets on the pitch. If he does, I don't expect much impact at all and more than 5 goals, if that and at the end of the season, a squad place and a bunch of money down the toilet which could have been far better spent. I hope Potter just has him riding the bench unless it's an emergency. Would rather see Marshall as first backup for Fullkrug. At least there's more benefit to us in giving him experience.
The cսnt's got the number nine shirt as well. I know it's fairly meaningless at the end of the day but it just boils my piss that little bit more.

I don't think anyone is questioning Wilson's goal-scoring ability.
But West Ham do not get on well with injury-prone players, especially at 33 years old when the desire and ability to recover quickly probably isn't the same as it is when you are 23.
It's all well and good saying: "If he's fit...." but it's the "IF" that make this deal so questionable. In that it's so fucking big.
