Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"Awful performance by England, lucky to get away with a draw. Dithering Gareth.............And there was me thinking we had all these breaks in the League each season for pointless friendlies that meant to be the games we experiment in?"

"Mega lolz @ Southgate’s comments about kalvin fucking Phillips. All that attacking talent and he’s talking about Phillips?? England were hopeless, how he can make so many good players so shit is amazing. Italy currently getting dicked on by a very good Spain side. Been awful with the ball and cannot get near Spain when we lose it."

"Shitegate actually stating that TAA in midfield ‘was an experiment’. What kind of cunting manager experiments with out of position players at the start of a major tournament. And experimenting with TAA put two others in unfamiliar territory therefore unbalancing the wholeside. No surprise then that the team played like a bunch of strangers. This absurd attempt by Shitegate to show us how clever he is only had the reverse effect. And Rio Ferdinand moaning about such negative football. Oh, the irony! Careful what you wish for mate."

I cannot believe Southgate even mentioned Phillips. As if he is the fucking answer! To be experimenting at this stage is piss poor. He has no idea how to set the team up and get the best out of a decent set of players. A criminal waste of talent under a clueless and serial failure. We'll get out of the group but fail at the first hurdle in the knock-outs.

"I always feel that England are the only nation where they have to be retrained to play international football, all the other nations look like they play the game they’ve grown up playing. We however play slowly almost like a running scene in Chariots of Fire and shrink into ourselves when we score, three kittens is more apt, our goal today was straight out of the PL we then seem to get paranoid about being pegged back. It’s brainless."

Actually Southgate’s Phillips comment makes a lot of other things make sense. Explains why he clung on to Maguire and Henderson for so long. Thinking ‘well who is the same as them?’ Thinking about a problem the absolute wrong way round. Not ‘what have I not got?’ But ‘what HAVE I got?’ What will work? Sounds like the guy is incapable of adapting or changing a structure. Just like Moyes plugging players into roles. It explains why he’s so reluctant to ever not use Kane. Clearly a safety blanket that he doesn’t know how to live without. Sure he’s Wnglands best striker but he doesn’t play how the team needs. You either adapt to his strengths or you play a centre forward who does what you need. I mean even with that I cannot fathom why he thinks it’s better to play TAA in centre mid over an actual centre midfielder or Trippier over an actual left back. Shoehorning a 10 onto the left wing over a left winger. Shoehorning an 8 into a 10. None of it is even necessary.

Southgate has arguably wasted some of the best attacking talent we have had in years by sitting back far too much and he never learns it's been the same since he blew both a Euros and a World Cup when he got lucky with the draw. Bar maybe France International sides haven't been as good as they were in the past and that's the only reason why he got as far as he did. Same old every time.

"If he wanted someone to play like Kalvin Phillips why didn’t he pick …. Kalvin Phillips? That would have been amusing As said he couldn’t have made more of a bollocks of team balance & selection if he’d tried As many have said Bellingham with Rice, Foden at 10 & Gordon on the left seems blindingly obvious Personally I’d even go Watkins & Palmer for Kane & Saka as well for the Slovenia game"

It’s an unbelievable statement for an international manager to make. Up there with ‘I don’t know why I’m here’ by Woy at the end of the Iceland defeat. Basically he doesn’t know what to do with one player not available. There should be a plan for any player missing. He needs to go for that soundbyte alone. Hey Gareth that’s what all the friendlies are for. Not to pad stats for your starters. Lose a player and it’s next best man up for the system you run. Acting like Philips is some indispensable player. Screams of a cheap excuse. The answer isn’t putting a fucking right back there. That should have been patently obvious to a youth team manager.

"Southgate has always been a bang average manager similar to Martinez. For all the relative success he's had, England have never looked dominant and like a side that will win tournaments. This is no great surprise, I said before the tournament that we were poor and for all the talent at his disposal he has no idea how to use them or pick a balanced side that plays to our or their strengths. Too many headless chickens and poster boys, absolutely no identity, style of play, character or grit, no idea what he's trying to do, he's a complete fraud that has been belatedly found out"

"Unless there’s a miraculous turnaround or we win the tournament he’s gone as soon as the plane home touches down. He doesn’t survive the embarrassment of being publicly called tactically inept by the entire BBC on air team. Even after the game when Kane said to the camera the players didn’t know what to do, Southgate was going on about who can he put in as Phillips replacement. Like it’s beyond his control. All he’s going to do is plug in a different player next to rice and hope it improves. Bellingham and Foden will still be out of position. our two best players not in their familiar club roles. Gareth is toast after this. Bereft of clues and ideas."

Shearer and the pundits ripping Southgate and the performance to pieces. Rightly so. Rio and Shearer clearly think TAA has to fuck off but are being very polite about it. Kane getting pelters off two Englishmen who know a thing about centre forward play I have never ever seen a group of pundits so visibly annoyed and critical of the players and manager before. And it’s needed.

"Rio can fuck off too.. Our best players at the top of the pitch and we sit back and defend.. Yeah it's shit isn't it Rio, was fine for us to do it though and for you to moan about us moaning about it. Did Walker just say it's tough when you come to these hostile grounds... It was majority England ffs, they're just using clich?©s."
