Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"Full Claret Jacket 10:31 Mon Jun 17 Everything right? How about back where it came from...? or down to the keeper's right maybe? You know, anywhere but directly where the keeper was positioned The only intentionally good cross in the entire 90 minutes which should, of course, have been buried"

Second half was very much like watching West Ham over the last couple of years. Harry Kane won't get dropped despite the fact that he drops himself at the slightest hint of contact. I don't think I have ever seen anyone who goes down as much as he does.

England scored and then went into defensive mode. Stopped passing and moving and started defending deep. Foden looked lost on the left. He is a great player but wasted playing this system. Gordon would have been more direct and stretched then second half. Kane like so many games is anonymous but then pops up with a goal. To be honest England created nothing for him. Couple of Saka crosses and a Bowen one which he actually did everything right on. England did too much passing backwards no movement. Watkins is great with movement but no chance Kane gets dropped and he is Englands Jonah and the reason we wont win anything. Liked seeing Bowen given a few minutes and he did ok. Shouldnt start but good impact player. Glad he got the nod ahead of Cole Palmer.

"Agree with consensus on here. Harsh truth is that Kane never delivers in the tournaments and games that matter ither than pens and he missed one of them when it did matter. Give Watkins, Toney and even Bowen some minutes centrally for more pace and movement or in Toney’s case more physical presence. He’s ( Kane) untouchable because he’s scored so many goals against lesser teams in qualifying games I guess? Foden looks great in a really dominant Citeh team but lightweight in a far less possession dominant England team. Should not be a starter imho. Trent Alexander good when on the ball but a liability when not in possession. Gives the opposition too much time amd space. Impact sub no more for me if we go more direct and start launching crossess in for a player like Toney. Main issue we had yesterday was time and space we allowed in midfield once Serbs took the game to us. Need more intensity in there and ability to keep it. Gallagher will help with his work rate and that is the value a player like Bowen gives too. Working and closing down when the opposition have it. Saka is quick and gets in behind against some teams but can also be marked out of some games and does not provide much when England dont have the ball. Bowen has more variation to his game so will prove useful when Saka is not producing / quiet. Southgate is biggest part of the problem though. Lack of tactical innovation and know how so resorts to Moyes-esque football based on fear."

"It wasn't very inspiring, but it was the first game and a win, so I'm in the wait and see camp, but it needs to be better and we need to play at a higher tempo. Rice was on the ball a lot just in front of the back 4 and usually did very little with it, I'd like to see us play at a higher tempo and get up the pitch quicker instead of always seemingly going through him. Not sure about these 'excuses' for Foden, regardless of where he plays he's never convinced in an England jersey, he played in the 10 role against Iceland and was shit. Would happily see him left out on Thursday, he's got bit of the John Barnes's about him. Suspect there will be a change or two for the game, which is perfectly normal anyway. Bowen did well, which should mean we see plenty more of him and is probably now our first go to sub for a forward position."

"Really good first half hour. Saka was excellent in it, Bellingham too. Foden absolutely wasted on the left, Bellingham would have been just as good alongside Rice and Foden would have improved us playing as the ten. TAA not for me, Gallagher brought more energy and pressing, but Mainoo looked calmer on the ball. Bowen was excellent when he came on. Rice was very good. The balance of the team is just wrong, Grealish could have helped the left last night I don't see the point of both Toney and Watkins if Kane is playing that poorly and won't be taken off."

"Serbia are a workmanlike team but aren’t going to challenge for the title You’d have to be worried that once Tadic came on & they had more control England looked a bit Moyesball TAA is a liability unless you are dominating the ball. If he is going to continue this formation Bellingham has to drop back into TAA’s spot, Foden move to 10 & Gordon maybe starting on the left. If Shaw is fit & can find a pair of shorts that fit after 4 months out he should play on the left as the only real left back in the squad. Bowen deserves more time on the pitch too"

Agree with Sydney… Waistcoat a fool…ultra defensive…square pegs in rounds holes… Too timid…FFS England rated 4th Serbia 35th… Kane…useless…Foden invisible…Alexander- A wasted … Defense weak in. The air…will get exposed often… Bellingham…Saka…Rice…Bowen…Walker…Stones best Typical Waisrcoat game…glad we won…but he won’t learn from it…

Safegate really needs to go for the jugular when England are on top. First half we had the momentum and should of pushed for a second or third. Instead as soon as we score we sit in and let the opposition come back into the game. Same thing happened against Croatia in WC semi and Italy in last Euro's final.

"He just as importantly made a few decent blocks and challenges defensively when we needed it late on as well. Proper Team player performance from our boy but no surprise to us. He's pushing for a starting place at this rate, even if it meant playing on the left and switching with Saka during a game."

"Bellingham although a hot head is still World Class and the best chance we've got of winning anything in the next 10 years or so. Even when we play bad, he still manages to grab us by the scruff of our necks taking no for an answer scoring the all important winner. 20yo and already instrumental in winning a League and Champions League double for his new Club, La Liga player of the season, in for a shout for the Ballon D'or and will only get better. I'd make him the next England Captain which I think would help calm him down a bit."

We will not win or do well in this Tournament by persisting with Arnold in the middle whilst pushing Foden wide out on the left so to accommodate him. What he offers isnt worth it for the rare occasional Hollywood ball. The Team is screaming out for playing 4-3-3 with Rice holding and both Bellingham and Foden supporting him either side. Play Bowen or Gordon wide left with Saka on the right and switch them. Playing 4231 we are too predictable and deep. Believe in our attack and we can win it. Have some bollocks about ya Southgate and just go for it....

"I may remember incorrectly, but didn't Southgate leave TAA out of a squad, and rightly got praised for it? And now at major finals starts him in midfield! Great talent in that squad, but you might as well have Moysie in charge, separated at birth"

"Bellingham isn’t even a quarter of the player these pundits are trying to make out Foden is a much better number 10 and is being played out of position to the detriment of the team to accommodate him I really don’t understand why they’re hyping him up so much, literally wanking themselves silly over a 15 yard half volley backwards under no pressure"

He's trying to be more attacking. I've a feeling focusing system to get the best out of Bellingham isn't a great plan. Get him into a number 8 next to rice Forden in the 10 Bowen over saka of course And eze on the left Bosh
