"Zach Wilson is going through something very similar right now. He probably needed to learn that he's not god (that's Elway!), and that he has to cut the ego and focus on learning how to be effective and win at the highest level. What's happened instead is that he swaggered into New York, thought he was the best thing since sliced bread having been the #2 overall pick, allegedly got a bit carried away by the milf market (certainly distracted by some off-field issues), and rubbed his team-mates up the wrong way. Now, he's crashed back down to Earth and has lost all confidence because it has dawned on him that he's not god's gift unless he works like a dog and cuts out the nonsense. He's been found out. We'll see if he has the character to bounce back. Maybe he will."

"Don't get me wrong - Geno also had his flaws in New York and some of them were very much of his own making. Often they were about his early-career ego, which is common among high-pick QBs who had been idolised at university, to whom few people had ever said ""no"" and they had not (yet) experienced failure as part of their learning curve. Geno had a huge ego coming out of college. He'd led (very well) a successful university side, and was personally expecting to be drafted in the first round - even though he wasn't quite top-30 standard that year. He handled the draft process badly - people thought he was arrogant for expecting to go in the first round and, when he didn't, he sacked his agents. That should have been a bit of a red flag - to him. He needed to rein in his ego. So when he encountered his early struggles in the NFL, which most young QBs encounter, he didn't seem to have the experience or character to deal with the challenges the professional league throws at you. He needed time to learn the game at the highest level, and also to manage his own ego so that he became more of a team player. It's no coincidence that he's now playing arguably the best football of his career now that he's 32, has experienced the trials and tribulations of the game and is a much older, wiser and less egotistical head. If he'd been a little more like that at the Jets, he'd have done better. But that's how the game - and extreme wealth, adulation and pressure - at a young age, can get you."

That's the kind of confidence you can normally only get after time getting the feel of the league. Spending time as a back up seems essential for QBs to properly flourish, as a general rule."

"OGS - agree with you re: Geno. The Jets mis-managed him, as they have so many other QBs. They drafted him in round 2, yet felt the need to start him immediately - and it placed a huge amount of undue pressure on him to win games straight away. He wasn't given enough time to sit on the bench, learn the playbook and ease his way into the franchise. The Jets ruin a lot of QBs that way. It's a ""win now"" league these days - and the pressure is on franchises (not just the Jets) to start high-pick QBs straight away. I still like the older model of allowing them to sit on the bench, work in training and learn the game for a season or two first. Ironically, the last QB the Jets allowed to 'sit and learn' was Pennington - and, until he was injured, he was very good for us. He was a 1st round pick, but we already had Testaverde at the time, so Pennington wasn't asked to start games until Vinny got injured. Much less pressure on him, and time to learn the playbooks, as a consequence. Maybe Zach Wilson needs to sit and learn behind a more mature QB1."

Not been to Seattle yet but saw the Hawks at Wembley close up. Called Seattle at 8-9 in the preseason predictions and thought that was wildly optimistic. southbank - On the subject of Jets QBs, Hawks seem to have done well out of Geno this year. He's been arguably a level above journeyman/game manager and certainly a decent starter."

""We can be eliminated?"" . that was the icing on the cake of another terrible season. he's the nicest person in the world but a bad head coach. the franchise has been filled with ex panther colleagues and players rather than the best available and we're about to see a third consecutive losing season. organisations can't succeed where nepotism thrives, we have by far the worst play caller in the league (scott turner, son of norv) yet he won't be fired because of his dad's history with ron. rivera's also been given so much power that he's the defacto GM, where every hire & fire goes through him so how can a team be accountable if no one is holding him to a required standard? the only positive is the future sale of the franchise"
