Paqueta Paqueta - Latest news

Post Alan »

"Sport Bible New report on Lucas Paqueta's spot-fixing charges reveals how much of next season West Ham star can play There has been an update on Paqueta's case. Alex Brotherton Lucas Paqueta will be free to play for West Ham for most of next season despite facing spot-fixing charges. Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association with four separate instances of spot-fixing. The 28-year-old stands accused of deliberately getting himself booked during four Premier League matches. It is one of the most serious cases of spot-fixing involving a top-flight player in England, and could land Paqueta with a lengthy ban. However, the Brazil international can continue to play until the disciplinary process has been completed. According to The Times, the outcome of the process could be delayed until the end of the 2024-25 season or beyond. That is due to the complexity of the case; Paqueta's lawyers say it will take many months to secure all the witness statements and relevant information they need for their defence. That's because the case spans three countries - England, Brazil and Spain - and involves a large number of people. The charges allege that Paqueta got himself booked during matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth over the past two seasons so that “one or more persons” could profit financially. The investigation that preceded the charges took eight months. In September 2023, Brazilian outlet Globo reported that suspicious gambling patterns were identified in Brazil relating to Paqueta being booked against Aston Villa in March that year. The bets were reportedly made using West Ham's shirt sponsor Betway, via accounts belonging to people linked to Paqueta. The FA initially gave the player until June 3 to respond to the charges, but his lawyers were granted an extension. English football's governing body has refused to put a timescale on the case. Paqueta has been linked with a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo this summer, but this latest development will give encouragement to new West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui that he can use the midfielder this season."

FWIW, this is almost the exact same situation with Tom Brady and "deflategate". They got his phone did whatever and gave it back at which point he threw it away. The league then wanted it back and tried to make a big deal out of him throwing it away which ultimately went nowhere.

Assuming the FA did have access, can't see anything other than them having egg on their face for not collecting what they needed.

Why the fuck, given the severity of the charges, did they give him the phone back? Weapons grade incompetence, that.

Surely they knew he'd go straight out and buy a replacement when they first took it, simply in order to get on with his life.

Paqueta's not responsible for the stupidity of the FA (investigation team).

If they fucked up, they need to man up and say so, so everybody can move on.

Thought it was established that they asked for his phone and gave it back after 8 weeks
Obviously he bought a new one in the meantime and disposed of the old when returned
Later they asked for the phone again for some reason & told him he was obstructing the investigation when he didn’t have it
After going on for 2 years the cunts are floundering and I’ve always said we should be taking legal action as they are too embarrassed to back off
Ruining the players career & stopping us from selling him

Yes, I know what you're saying, but it's still rubbish.

If we spend £30m on another player, all things being equal, he is a £30 million pound asset. We haven't lost anything on him.

We either lost Paqueta's transfer value, or we've lost his on book value. We haven't lost both. If we'd sold him for £30m and bought his replacement for £30m, by your logic we'd have lost £30m. Which is absolute nonsense.

they took his phone, he went out and bought a new one so didn’t need the old one anymore so tossed it when they gave it back
but now I’ve read that wasn’t the case, they asked for it, he didn’t reply and threw the phone away, and then when they asked for it again, then he replied and said he didn’t have it anymore

it depends which one is true
the first scenario is perfectly fine
the second one isn’t though
It is common knowledge that he handed his phone over as it has been reported as so and it is the phone that apparently the FA are basing their case. So I would suggest the second scenario is bullshit.

Paqueta will finish his career in Brazil I suppose ( they are not bound by FA rules etc ? )
Whether or not he would be able to finish his career in Brazil would be dependent on the FA convincing FIFA to extend the ban world wide. Given that the Brazilian FA has decided not to proceed with their own investigation it may be that FIFA would find it politic not to enforce it. But who knows. I think this will be in the courts for years if he is found guilty on the basis of probability. Either way he won't be in a hammers shirt next year.

FA have to create a strong deterrent that is their priority and why I guess he will get a life time ban since they use “balance of probabilities” not facts.  Gawd knows what the truth is but its West Ham and we always come out on the losing side of any thing like this.

Paqueta will finish his career in Brazil I suppose ( they are not bound by FA rules etc ? ) and we will be lucky to get 20 million of our 50 million outlay.

Then we have to sue Paqueta which will take years and come to nothing ?

From an accounting perspective you've not made a £30m loss on Paqueta. He's not valued at £60m in our books.

I get that you've lost the opportunity to have sold him at a higher price because of whats happened.

Rossal is right.  If we sold Paqueta, we'd all be expecting a replacement to come in.

You're counting the same £30m twice, mate. He either can't be sold and we are out of a possible £30m fee or he stays and we lose his services which are valued at £30m. He can't leave and stay.
The £30m sale is the fact that a potential sale this summer has gone. Its £30M off the valuation sheet
Nonetheless, it's still only one lot of £30m. You can't count £30m for a potential sale and another £30m for a potential loss on the balance sheet as well,. If we sold him for £30m, he wouldn't be on the balance sheet to lose out on.

It's only one lot of £30m. And it's only £20m by the end of the season.

Gank wrote: 06 Mar 2025, 08:31 Fraser and Manuel, you are both right - on his day he's among the most skilful players in the world, but 'on his day' is much rarer now than it used to be.

Makes me wonder if his patchy form is because of the scandal and investigation.

If so, then if he gets cleared we might get the more consistent version back. If found guilty he probably won't be able to play anyway. So it's only for the rest of the month that we need to worry about it.
Not that I disagree with this appraisal of his abilities, but there is more to this. It's not like he goes anonymous when he isn't in form, he makes costly mistakes. When he is bad it isn't that he isn't contributing its that he playing to the detriment of the team. I like what he is capable of but when he is playing like he has been recently the team is better off with a lesser player who just doesn't do much. I am glad he is out at the moment.

Genuinely think it's a combination of things. There's no way this won;t have been affecting him to some extent. Let's also be real, he's not been really put in the best position to play to his potential under Moyes or Lop where it's clearly system first and slot best available player in later. (I'm fairly convinced he was another who fell out with Lop given his in/out of the team status) We're seeing it a bit more under Potter where Potter wants to put his best players in a position to contribute. You can see he's getting more out of the player with this approach.

Sure he may have been patchy/underwhelming for us at times, but if he wasn't any good then Man City (The Man City of last season, not this) wouldn't have been sniffing around him.
