Football Super league rumours yet again !!

Post ted fenton »

"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

"Thing is though, that even though American sports are closed leagues, they have a lot of mechanics in the way they work to try and encourage parity and prevent single teams dominating. Draft, Salary cap. It's actually a better and fairer business model than all the global sports. Of course those things only work within a closed system so they couldn't be applied anyway and I have absolutely no illusion that parity is at all in the plans for the ESL. Even within that you'll end up with the haves and the have nots. Spurs, Arsenal and a few others will just end up being everyone's whipping boy year after year and finishing bottom with no points again and again. Then I've no doubt their fans will fuck off to support someone else, or the clubs might want to get out of it. The teams that find themselves at the top will probably just start using that to ask for more of the ESL pie when renegotiations come round and it'll end up as just an unbalanced system as everything else with the two Spanish clubs and a couple of others bullying the rest to get even more money and fucking their 'friends' over the way they just tried to fuck the rest of football. In some ways I'd have quite liked them to go ahead with it just to see it blow up in so many people's faces a few years down the line."

I think that these six clubs should be relegated this season their supporters obviously wouldn't be happy but the majority of footballs real fans would be overjoyed with this or a similar response. I for one would applaud this punishment and restore my faith in the games governing bodies.

"Agreed Mike. Now the so called big six will use the media to get their fanbase back on side. Give it a week or so and the poverty of the big clubs will be on the back pages. How the unfair system is bleeding them dry and how theres no money for transfers in the summer. Nothing gets the fanbase of those entitled clubs more upset than not being able to have a couple of super signings for the new campaign. Season tickets will need to go up, the Brie plate at WHL will have less water biscuits. Replica shirts at OT will no longer have free name printing on them. Then the helpful pundits will chip in about how ‘in the current climate’ West Ham ‘will have to accept a lower fee for Rice’."

"ParadiseLost 2:00 Wed Apr 21 True. The media need to be called out for media bias, but the comms budget at the Big six probably ensures that the media get treated very well whenever at one of their grounds ""reporting"". Same Christmas, different turkeys."

"If you’ve ever worked with Americans like the owners of some of these clubs you’ll know they don’t understand shame. They’ll do the contrite PR thing now (with a little spin) if they think it will head off any actions to cost them cash - which includes points. Give it a month and they’ll be pounding the table about giving them more money and meeting again to figure out how they get European football to look like American closed shop ‘sport’. And the PL/FA will go back to looking after these ‘wealth creators’, ignoring Sala’s diving, adding time on in the hope of a big team goal and the farce of VAR decisions. We, as a little club have to keep in our place. If Brady accidentally flashed her knickers we’d be accused of bringing the game into disrepute and the Mirror would be calling for a points deduction."

"southbank...., Totally agree, this cannot end without the so called big6 being punished. I don't know what Sheffield Wednesday did to get a points deduction but nothing compared to 6 megarich clubs seeking to stamp their authority over the way the game should be run in Europe. Working behind closed doors they have sought to undermine all authorities and look at the chaos they have caused including hitting out at every true football fan. They must have points deducted now, a massive fine and the obscene owners of the clubs should be given a few months to remove themselves completely from the game. Without punishment it will happen again and again and ....."

Helmut Shown 1:52 Wed Apr 21 Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !! They threw the book at us for a minor misdemeanour by falling foul of an obscure paragraph in the rules. Then with the collusion of a fuckwit judge and a know nothing journalist they imposed a hefty monetary compensation penalty. So what sort of punishment should be meted out to these crooks? Spot on.

"Trundle - but, don't forget, if you aim to ban them from Europe then it's not just the PL that can do that: UEFA, too. So you have two potential routes through which you could apply such punishment. If the PL was too weak then UEFA could, in theory, go in harder. Unlikely, given UEFA past record, but you never know..."

"If the clubs are punished it will be due to what ever is in the rules or laws they are subject to. I have no idea what that means as I don't know them but my gut feeling is they might get a fine, they might not."

"Kaiser - it's ALWAYS been a consideration. It was with us and Tevez (we were not deducted points and we/our players stayed in the Premier League). I don't feel a fine would be appropriate - Real Madrid and Tottenham would probably just lump it onto their huge debts - but preventing them from doing the very thing they wanted to do, dominate European football, for one season might make them clear their heads."

"""I agree there should be tough sanctions but the problem will be that if they result in any/all of the 12 not qualifying for Europe next season then they'll just get back together again on their ESL idea."" That was always going to be the problem. The Premier League really should have been decisive and when it became obvious that everyone was against the Super League they should have decided there and then what the punishments were for teams to return. Instead they didn't really do anything, and any punishment now is likely to be shit."

The managers and players chose to be employed by these cunts. Didn't they do due dilligence? Or was it just the money and fame that attracted them to the club?

"I agree - and for that reason I'd favour a 'short, sharp shock' punishment. Maybe a one-season ban on their participation in any European competition (next season). It would be just one year, so couldn't be seen as disproportionate, but would be a sharp reminder of what they would lose if they try this shit again. Such a ban would also avoid a points deduction, which might be seen as punishing players and managers who had no say on what their clubs did. That way, you're not punishing the players' league performances - you're punishing the club and owners with a sanction that is all about their biggest interest: money."

Goose. I'd rather it went to teams in all the other leagues. The ones that have been really hit by lack of fans during covid. Prem teams will be fine due to tv revenue. They'll juat have to buy a slightly less amazing yacht this year

"Didnt Liverpool fans fuck up Everton's chances in the 80's of becoming a ""super club"" by getting everyone banned from Europe? (I think we lost out as well from that). I think Liverpool have a lot to answer for out here. They should be reminded of their real ""history""."
