"Just to further the point about the Spanish especially, Unlike the PL, the two spanish giants did not have a revenue share for their league. They took all the tv money themselves for the last 20 odd years. That seperated them from the rest of the clubs finanically and the subsequently got drunk on their own riches. The govt would have done fuck all about it were it not for the fan protests anyway so it's a bit of a moot point whether threats from Boris were the main cause of the English clubs pulling out or not.

I feel like all uefa has said is that you cant be in both competitions. Its really the fans that actually stopped it. The PL's objections were that eventually a SL would compete with them and therefore those clubs cant be in the PL as it wouldnt be fair for the rest of the clubs. Basically UEFA will argue that every club / federation is there voluntarily and are free to leave whenever. But whilst members they need to act for the benefit of the group and that would exclude setting up rival competitions in secret. The Spanish and Italian leagues are so f'd up in debt they really need to take their medicine. Clubs like Barca who gambled heavily should not be allowed to bring down other european clubs/competitions with their need to be solvent after decades of recklessness.

"Probably depends on UEFA's legal structure. If they have the right to set the criteria for who plays in their competition and who doesn't then not much anybody can do about it except boycott them in protest. Same goes for the national leagues who offer up teams to play in Europe; If a team wants to enter itself for a European competition outside the ones allowed/sanctioned by the national league, it is quite free to do so, but cannot remain in that national league under those circumstances. Nothing to stop the fiscally challenged fifteen from setting up a separate league then finding and bribing 5 teams each year from across Europe to join them."

I was just reading this story on the BBC and says the case by the European Super League has been referred to the European Court which is questioning the UEFAs monopoly to organise European football. Looks like UEFA may be the one that gets a telling off.
