"20 Days in Mariupol... one of the bravest bits of documentary film making I have ever seen on the screen...certainly not for the faint hearted... oh yeah dont get me wrong there will be the usual handful on here using the Ivan narrative of fake news... film sets... actors... amputee actors etc.. Will see Napoleon this week... reviews are split down the middle so will take it with a pinch of historical bullshit chucked in.... popped down to the National Army museum at Chelsea last week... great day out... if waterloo.is your thing... as it is with me.... to see Marengo (Boneys horse) , Wellingtons coat worn at Waterloo... along with pictons top hat that got shot off in the battle and the surgical saw that lopped off Uxbridges leg... well... thought all my Nspoleonic dreams had came true at once..."

An old one but has anyone seen Dead Man's Shoes (2004)? Saw it for the first time on Ch 4 catch up last night and bloody hell it's a brutal ride.

"Anyone seen Saltburn? Personally loved it even though I thought it was quite obvious what was going on so that the big reveal at the end (no, not that one!) was unnecessary. Had strong Stephen Poliakoff vibes. The acting was fantastic, Barry Keoghan has a bright future and will probably be the leading light of his generation and Rosamund Pike was terrific as always. Can imagine many will think that it's pretentious twaddle, which of course it is, but that's the beauty of it...."

"I seem to remember years ago you got a short film (almost like a support act) first, then adverts for other films, then Pearl and bloody Dean for god knows how long so we were probably in there for hours even though the film was only and hour and a half. Imagine watching Ben Hur on a hard seat! I think it was Ricky Gervais who said Leonardo Di Caprio went to the Premiere of The Irishman and by the time it finished his date was too old for him!"

Branded In Switzerland they always have an intermission in the film regardless of length and virtually everyone goes out to buy drinks and snacks

To be fair I do agree regarding the cinema. Its been so long since I last went to the flicks that I dont necessarily associate film watching with going to the cinema as when I watch a film its almost exclusively going to be at home on my sofa which lends itself to being more comfortable when watching a longer film.

Watching a long film a home shouldn't be a problem though, as you can watch it at your own steam (if watching alone) and that's what I do."

"BRANDED, the Ciro di Marzio back story? if so, yes a brilliant piece of film making. Must admit I buck the trend on this thread in that I like films to be longer. I dont think you can get deep enough in to a story within 90mins to 2hrs, thats obviously providing its a story worth telling. I think the explosion of box sets in recent yrs has altered appetite for longer films. You get used to immersing yourself in a story and the characters that a 2hr film just feels shallow at times."

Chim - That's what I have noticed watching these old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films again. I think the longest was Hound of the Baskervilles done by 20th Century Fox which is 80 minutes. The films done by Universal were anything from an hour to a little longer. Didn't remember they were all short and sweet but you don't get bored. Waiting for Oppenheimer to come out on platform because my bladder would mean I'd miss half of it at the cinema!!

"Why do nearly all films need to be three or four fucking hours long these days? My basic problem with going to the cinema is that: A:My poor old bladder or arthritic hip won't make it B: people, particularly young people can't shut the fuck up for that long, and C: editors don't seem to stand up to directors and say 'you know that bit when you say you have to fly down to Florida to meet the mob there? The drive to the private airport, starting the plane, you getting on, a CGI of the plane flying through the clouds, the landing at a private airfield in Florida, getting out of the plane and into a car and driving to your meet at a discreet house somewhere in Florida is about 30 minutes long and as boring as fuck- let's bin it'. All us punters really want to see is an interesting film wrapped up in under two hours written tightly. It in itself is a gift and an art."

Boots I’m not a fan of constant action films. So that was good. I’m more of a John Le Carre slow burn type fan which is rare so this really ticked all my boxes. I think I said it wouldnt be everybodies cuppa.
