Electric cars

"Brilliant, aren’t they? Leasing an MG4 at the moment. Apart from one or two minor gripes, it’s absolutely fantastic. I’ll never go back to an ICE car. Any of you lot drive an EV? What’s your experience with them?"

MMG 1 charge point per property. You had to have planning application in before 15th of June 2022 or a spade in the ground before 15th June 2023 to avoid part S - anything after it applies. You’ll start to see the wash through on developments starting from late next year.

"Will never get one, for all the manufacturer controlled gadgets, I would rather have the fun, raw emotion and ability to maintain of a mechanical petrol car. I'd maybe entertain hydrogen cars if anything. I just don't like 'connected' cars at all. Going to just drive round in a classic car and burn as much fuel as I can before I'm too old to drive or all the petrol stations close."

"I have a Tesla Y and sell charge points so I’m EV in. I get why people don’t want them but if you have off street parking, don’t often do long distances and hate petrol garages then they are great. Part S building Regs means that all new build developments of more than 10 houses with associated parking has to have a charge point - plus most car manufacturers are committing most of their budget into EV development- so can’t see them going away anytime soon. In the future the range will be better the battery’s will be cheaper - even recently the lithium ion battery cell prices fell under the $100/kwh mark - they were $1000/kwh in 2010 for context and the price of Brent crude was nearly $100 a barrel. The shifts are happening and the tipping point ain’t far away. Everyone talks about on route rapid chargers and infrastructure but it’s the HA’s the blocks of flats the right to park properties etc that need the ability to charge at home. That’s the real barrier. D/C rapids have good pay backs and are good from a funded perspective but A/C charging and that side of the infrastructure is the tricky bit. But the Daily mail can’t be bothered looking beneath the surface for any real stories."

"Take in the full life-cycle costs of an electric car, and not just the headline price and running cost, then it's clear that these vehicles are no better for the planet - or it's inhabitants - than current modes of transport. Upping their price won't stop the depletion of rare earths required to make them, it will simply add another element to financial inflation and their sales will keep rising because so many people (will) have been suckered into the belief that they are environmentally friendly and seek that feel-good factor of ""doing their bit"". If you want to ""do your bit"" help promote the idea of not having so many kids - and that includes trying to influence (big) businesses to stop viewing another child born as a potential future customer."

"I have had a long range Tesla for 3 years this December. It says range of 325 but I realistically think I get about 240 ish. not very often I do that many miles on one trip so sort of just charge it overnight a couple of times a week at home. When driving from midlands to London to see friends or family, I generally use the south mimms chargers, I charge for about 10 mins and get out and grab a drink and use the facilities and go again. I can go there and back without charging but then I have to drive nearer 70 and I usually drive a bit faster. The charging is just different rather than annoying. Plusses. Cost as others have said, lease was way to go for me and financially the car hasn't really cost me anything to own for 3 years. Charging is cheap compared to petrol or diesel. Although expensive if you had to use super chargers all the time. it is also very well equipped and lovely layout and very very quick. Downsides... I have taken it to the alps 3 times now and the constant charging when you have a fully loaded car is a pain in the arse and adds a good hour to 2 hours on the trip, which with kids is a pain in the arse, with just 2 adults it was fine. But how often do you really do that? Normal day driving is excellent and for people that say about range and spending hours charging, to be honest they just haven't done their research and just bought the wrong car for them. get the right car and electric is cheap and great. If you do live in the sticks and dont have a home charger and do 300 miles a day then I could see why you would not want one though."

"Of course there’s a lot of nonsense as it’s WHO. Fact is that if you live in town and have a detached house they are fine as a run about. They are not a long term alternative to internal combustion engines. Far too impractical for most people and especially if you do big mileages regularly. Start with the fact that most countries can’t generate enough electricity for decades ahead if there was a big shift to it. Where do apartment dwellers charge their cars? The cost of electricity is rising and as governments will have control of it, there is big issue with so much power under their control. They are bound to misuse it at sometime."

"Is there room in the boot of an electric car for a small portable generator and a jerry-can of fuel? Sure the generator output can be fed through a modified UPS to trickle charge the battery while on the road, thus extending the range somewhat. OK it'll make Greta stamp her foot and cry if she finds out but you'll LOOK green and environmentally friendly as you swan about town, which is ALL that counts, right?"

"Plenty of nonsense on here but that is always the case on any forum whenever anyone mentions EVs, I got a Tesla March 2022 and it is brilliant, the technology is so far ahead of anything else, e.g. charging on Tesla Chargers you just plug in, no swiping a credit card. The charger recognises the car and charges the registered card. I went to South Devon and charged at Bristol on the way there and again coming back. I have been from Brentwood to Winchester and back and to Lowestoft and back without needing to charge either time. Home charging helps massively, the Devon trip is the only time I have ever had to pay on the road to charge. Tesla chargers are so much more reliable and available than those for other EVs and I haven't been in a petrol station for 18 months. I didn't buy electric to be green, as I say the technology is great. Dropped the wife off at hospital the other week and sat in the car watching Essex cricket live on Youtube. When you set SatNav the car tells you what percentage battery you will have left at the destination, always very accurate. If you will have little charge left it will then show charging stations on route and tell you how many chargers are free at any given time as you get near. And voice control is great, say ""I am hot"" and the AC turns up, say ""my feet are cold"" and the warm air is directed accordingly. Say ""play I'm forever blowing bubbles"" and Spotify jumps to the Cockney Rejects. Ok, you can't have everything, It's on charge now, adds 9% for each hour plugged in. Not for everyone but when I had the unusual opportunity to get a new car that's what I went for. That's it."

"Ten reasons why they are anything but brilliant: 1. Way too expensive. Even fewer people would be buying them if it weren't for the subsidies, tax-breaks etc. 2. Nowhere near as green as they're cracked up to be, especially when you factor in the mining and processing of the lithium and other minerals required. 3. Range issues. 4. Charging issues - terrible infrastructure and dependability. 5. Cost of charging has risen considerably. 6. Battery issues - extremely expensive and have to be replaced after about 10 years. 7. What happens when the lithium runs out? Oh yes, it will. 8. Insurance premiums are going through the roof, because... 9. They can be dangerous. The batteries can spontaneously combust, especially if they are involved in any kind of collision. They burn incredibly intensely and cannot be extinguished until burnt out. 10. Many of the drivers are virtue-signalling twats."
