The vet said that it was operable but that it would cost £000's with very limited chance of success and implications anyway. Said it was our decision. We thought about it for a while and decided that it was for the best to let her go and called the vet back... hardest decision we've had to make so far. The vet kindly said it was what she would have done. We were able to go and pick her up from the vet and go for a last walk with her which was very sad, mainly because she looked fine but just couldn't keep any food down. We then sat outside in the sun on a rug with her while the vet injected her... welling up just thinking about it!!!!"

"i'd come back from tour recently - and my wife had informed me one of our dogs had stopped eating - he was 13 We made the decision to take him to vet ti be put down - made the apt for the end of the week. We cooked a steak for his last meal - and just to see if he would accept any sustenence - surprisingly he wolfed it down - after almost a week of not eating at all On our way down to the surgery we walked him at one of his favourite walks and said our goodbyes as tears rolled down our cheeks - our vet is located 30 miles away near are old town, a vet we could trust and had known our dogs all their lives. At the vets we ticked the boxes for ashes, wooden urn and footprint. - as we went into the examination room, I asked the vet just to check him over, which the vet did so although thought it was an odd request . . . turns put dog had a UTI and a extremely high temp brought the dog home - soppy bastard he's still fucking here its wierd resiging yourself to a dog being put down - and then 6 months later the cսnt still being here"

Yeah a horrible experience to go through but the lesser of two evils rather than let an animal suffer. It's the way they look at you as if they know the game is up that gets you the worse. Going home and having to get rid of the food bowl toys and bed also does you in. Doing the right thing doesn't seem much consolation at first but you know you done right I had.to put the family ginger Tom to sleep a couple of years back and put him in my sister's brand new car to take him to the vets but low and behold it wouldn't start. We started wondering if it was a sign but ultimately knew he was suffering so just had to call a cab and get it done.

"This is a long one. Sorry. We adopted a Rescue Dog. Staffy Cross. We were told it had lost all his top teeth trying to escape from a cage it was found in. Apparently he was adopted but the people that adopted him dumped him back at the rescue place. They could have been bullshitting but we thought f&ck it. For years, never had any trouble with him or with our kids. When he passed away we got his ashes and I’ve still not opened the bag with the Urn in it. I work from home so we now do dog minding instead as a bit of extra income."

Side of Ham 10:34 Tue Nov 7 Hope your not dissing all of us Apsies. Branded is just a bit of a twat. I left my last cat far too long before getting her put to sleep. She had cancer everywhere and had got to stage where she could barely move and was in a huge amount of pain. I was there when she died and she is now buried in my garden with a rose planted on top.

"Piggybacking on what some others have said, I did not put my last dog down when I probably should have. She was definitely getting towards the end (falling down stairs on occasion, losing her bladder). I let her out one morning and she refused to come back in which was very odd for her, so I let her stay out there and went to work. Came home and found she had wedged herself up under a bush far back in the yard to die. I've always felt horrible she went alone, and the loss hits just as hard. Sorry for your loss and good on you for giving him a great life."

Willtell 12:48 Tue Nov 7 Christ that’s a bad run of shit luck mate. “I’d love to know what they put in dog foods” I wouldn’t and now feed our dogs on a raw diet the brand we feed them on is natures menu. I have two fairly large German Shorthaired Pointers they come from a working strain both young and very energetic. Fortunately we can afford to feed them on the above they thrive on the stuff and rarely get sick. They get fed twice a day an hour before or after runs (as deep chested dogs are prone to bloat/twisted stomach in most cases fatal) The cost is about a fiver a day each. It’s expensive but vets bills are horrendous.I can’t reccommend it highly enough.”

He had an op but it grew back within months. The 2nd was the best dog in the world. A Labrit Pyrenean Shepherd. Ours since a tiny 6 week old pup. Obedient, faithful and always up for chasing a stick or ball. Only 13 when cancer got him. Then several months later our English Setter also developed a stomach cancer problem. I'd love to know what they put in dog foods but losing 3 to cancer in a short period was particularly hard on my wife. We're now back to 2 very different dogs. An 8 month old Podenco and a rescue 18month old Black Lurcher - Labrador Greyhound cross."

After a while you get to appreciate dogs are all different.in my case made the loss far easier than I would ever have thought. We lost our dog a day after one of my sons 18th birthday as it turned out he had a proper shit 18th.
