I disagree I think it's a bit pathetic to apply modern terms to what would have been basic 'fan feelings' of admiration, desire to emulate or straight up awe when we were younger and now we are all older has no relevance and just sounds creepy.
When I played in goal between jumpers I imagined I was Phil Parkes and when I was old enough I used Cossack hairspray. Man crush it wasn't basic childhood fandom it was.

FWIW, i don't EVER recall having any kind of attraction to a West Ham player, or any footballer or sportsman for that matter.
