Just watching the 2015 Hammers v Arsenal  3-3 match on the Peacock Premier League channel. Payet & Lanzini in midfield - drool.
Lanzini just scored a perfectly good goal - ruled out wrongly for offside, he was 2 yards onside.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how reliable are those statistics. It strikes me as something that would have a high margin of error. Who or what determines what constitutes 'running' and how reliable is the technology in determining that?

Guess they track each player and add up the distance they all cover when running as opposed to walking. Can’t be all that hard with the tech these days

Yeah I get that, but how is it measured? You can walk faster than some people jog etc And are they wearing accelerometers with identical calibration each game to detect a run or is there an overhead camera trying to work this out with different algorithms depending on which company is doing the monitoring?

During last night's game, West Ham covered 120.7 kilometres in distance against Newcastle.That distance is the longest of any side in a single Premier League match this season.Their previous best was the 113 kilometres they ran against Manchester United, which ranked 43rd of all clubs on this season's list.

So which running stat. version should we treat as correct?

First game this season I have actually enjoyed. I wouldn't say we played outstanding as we were on the backfoot the first half and scored against the run of play.

It was a noticeable improvement though, with Soler and Paqueta working the middle. Antonio also put in a proper shift and the team actually played like a team.

Saying that though, Newcastle were poor second half as much as we were good. I couldn't believe how much space they gave us, which I doubt many other sides will do.

Hopefully Lopetegui won't go back to two defensive midfielders again, and Antonio can keep the grafting up as there are opportunities to get quite a few points in December.

I really hope this means the end of the two defensive midfielders lineup, and I urge JLo to keep the same starting XI even if Alvarez and Kudus once are available.

Watching the game again, we really were outstanding. It's as close to a complete performance you're going to get from start to finish at such a difficult place to go and play.

If this style of play doesn't appeal, Football really isn't for you. A ridiculous high level of quality for most of the game and the scoreline actually flattered Newcastle in the end. 

This is what I had been waiting for and expecting, just like his days at Sevilla.

What I also liked seeing was how much all the player's were enjoying playing this level of Football. They've embraced it and totally bought in to what Lopetegui asks of them which I was worried they might not buy in to it as it's so demanding.

About 2/3 of the way through the first half - no commentary.

General consensus on here seems to be that we were under the cosh during that time, but I don't see it that way; Newcastle had a lot of possession, sure, but we marshalled them well and battled better than I've seen for a long time to get that 2nd ball.

Hour to go. Ho Hum.

It's a bit easy to say that when you already know what the final score is going to be though, because you just watch the game differentlyif you're not living through it as it happens. Maybe more objectively to be fair- who knows.

But it definitely felt at the time like we were living very dangerously in that first half and needed to grow into the game, plus got a bit of luck.
