West Ham are considering Sérgio Conceição as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui, whose future as manager is under growing pressure after his team’s 5-2 defeat at home against Arsenal last Saturday.
The Guardian revealed last month that the Spaniard’s position hinged on results against Newcastle and Arsenal, with defeats in both outings likely to have resulted in his dismissal. Lopetegui, hired as David Moyes’s replacement last summer, met the challenge by recording an impressive 2-0 win at Newcastle.
Yet West Ham were unable to build on that performance when they hosted Arsenal, who sailed into a 4-0 lead inside 36 minutes after capitalising on some woeful defending. The manner of that latest collapse has placed Lopetegui under renewed scrutiny before the trip to Leicester on Tuesday night and the home game against Wolves next Monday. Although beating Newcastle has bought the 58-year-old time, it is understood West Ham have been identifying potential replacements.
There is serious interest in Conceição, who left Porto last summer. The 50-year-old Portuguese, who led Porto to three league titles and twice took them to the Champions League quarter-finals, is thought to be attracted to the job. West Ham are yet to establish contact with Conceição but there is support for him within the club.
Other contenders include the former Juventus manager Max Allegri, who has been pictured in London recently. There is a feeling that Graham Potter could come into contention. The former Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier, who is coaching Al-Duhail in Qatar, has been considered in the past.
West Ham, six points above the bottom three, are yet to advance interest in Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager. They have made checks on Kasper Hjulmand, Roger Schmidt and Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness.
West Ham do not have a history of swift sackings and remain reluctant to fire Lopetegui but there is growing alarm over the team’s form. The former Wolves manager has struggled to implement his vision and there is disquiet over last summer’s transfer business. West Ham spent more than £100m on players. Questions have been asked about Tim Steidten, the technical director.
Lopetegui could be in serious trouble if West Ham lose against Leicester. He has been boosted by the availability of Lucas Paquetá who had been expected to give evidence in São Paulo on Tuesday to the Brazilian parliament for its inquiry into sports betting. The midfielder’s legal team successfully argued for him to appear via a remote video link.
However it has emerged that Paquetá, who has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged breach of its betting regulations, is not obliged to give evidence to the inquiry and has chosen not to do so. The Brazil international denies wrongdoing.
West Ham will also be able to call upon Mohammed Kudus after the forward’s five-match ban. Lopetegui said the defender Jean-Clair Todibo was a doubt.

Exclusive: West Ham make Vladimir Coufal transfer decision – talks underway
West Ham have decided to offer right-back Vladimir Coufal a new contract at the club rather than sell him, sources have told Football Insider.
The 32-year-old’s current deal is up at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Talks are underway with West Ham keen to find a solution and an offer has been extended to Coufal – but no agreement has been found as of yet.
The Irons are keen to keep the Czechia international at the London Stadium despite summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka passing him in the pecking order at right-back.
Manager Julen Lopetegui is believed to see Coufal as key to his side with his impact in the dressing room a big factor in the decision.
The full-back is one of the most experienced members of the West Ham squad having joined the club back in October 2020, shortly after the arrival of countryman Tomas Soucek.

West Ham and Crystal Palace 'Want to Hold Talks' to Sign £20m Star

West Ham United and Crystal Palace are increasingly hopeful that Manchester City will be open to selling James McAtee during the fast-approaching January transfer window as recruitment chiefs at the London Stadium and Selhurst Park are eager to enter discussions over a move, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.
Hammers head coach Julen Lopetegui is aiming to bolster his squad just a matter of months after splashing the cash, with Max Kilman being the most expensive summer acquisition thanks to completing a £40million switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Eagles boss Oliver Glasner is also scouring the market.
Although Crystal Palace forked out £12.5million in order to land Ismaila Sarr from Marseille in August, as they looked to fill the void left by the departed Michael Olise following his move to Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich, they are ready to battle with West Ham for McAtee's signature as they go in search of further creativity.
Hammers and Eagles Eager to Recruit McAtee
West Ham and Crystal Palace are desperate to have the chance to hold talks over a mid-season deal for McAtee, according to GMS sources, and the London rivals are growing in hope that Manchester City are entertaining the possibility of sanctioning their academy graduate's departure.
The attacking midfielder has been limited to just one minute of Premier League action this season, having failed to work his way into the forefront of boss Pep Guardiola's plans following loan spells at Sheffield United, and it has resulted in the Hammers and Eagles aiming to take advantage by offering a route out of the Etihad Stadium.
GMS sources have been informed that West Ham and Crystal Palace are among McAtee's most serious suitors after the majority of his game time has come in cup competitions since the campaign got underway, and Manchester City have already been fielding enquiries surrounding his availability in January.

The reigning Premier League champions have refused to rule out seeing the winter window as the right time to offload the 22-year-old if a bid in the region of £20million is tabled, giving Lopetegui and Glasner renewed optimism as they seek to come out on top in the battle for his services.
Manchester City falling adrift in the Premier League title race has resulted in McAtee having little chance of increasing his game time opportunities in the coming months, GMS sources have learned, which has led to interest from the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace intensifying as they continue ironing out transfer plans.
GMS sources have been told that West Ham and Crystal Palace are facing stiff competition from overseas as they look to wrap up a winter deal for McAtee because European clubs are also beginning to touch base with Manchester City after being put on red alert thanks to his lack of game time.
The 16-cap England under-21 international is poised to enter the final 18 months of his £15,000-per-week contract at the turn of the year, leading to the Hammers and Eagles not being alone as they aim to convince their target to embark on a fresh challenge with one of his current employers' Premier League counterparts instead of moving abroad.
Manchester City are becoming more open to conversations about McAtee's future as they are considering bringing in reinforcements who would push him further down the pecking order, GMS sources understand, allowing West Ham, Crystal Palace and other interested parties to grow in confidence that an agreement can be reached.
GMS sources recently revealed that the playmaker has been expected to remain at the Etihad Stadium despite being in line to hold fresh discussions over his future game time prospects, but setbacks in the race for a fifth consecutive top flight title have resulted in the Sky Blues considering a U-turn.
