A fantastic read and really insightful about Lyall, I was going to get the same book aout Bobby Moore but may now opt for the one with Biliy Bonds as he was more my era asa kid growing up, I hope he does one about Trevor, my favourite ever West Ham player .
That was a superb book as was West Ham The Managers by Tony McDonald. Really miss the old Ex Magzines as well, brilliant publications. Think I got the Billy Bonds and Bobby Moore on Ebay for a special deal of £35 for the two. Not sure if it is still on there as a deal. So have the Bobby one to read next.
In that John Lyall book the most incredible and sad chapter was about Mark Smith. Never heard of him before reading the book but by all accounts he could have become quite a full back if it hadn't been for a quite horrendous medical condition that he still suffers today but incredibly he kept hidden. Reading about it I am amazed he could function just day to day life let alone play football. That and poor old Greg Campbell who wrecked his knee at Chadwell Heath on an old Tennis net iron that was just under the soil. Ouch!!

What is also interesting in the book is how many ex players seemed to have had an issue with Ron Greenwood and his lack of man management skills. Have read this before and it was clear that's where Lyall was by far a better manager, but I really was surprised to see that Ron could be a bit of a bugger to say the least. Still can't believe Bonzo never won an England cap, especially under Greenwood, should have had at least 100.
Totally agree - Ron was a brilliant tactical mind in his pomp for West Ham, but Lyall was the better man-manager (and also an excellent tactician). If I had to pick our best-ever manager, I'd say it was John Lyall, by a hair's breadth. The two of them together must have been a superb pairing and I wish I had been young enough to see it all. By the time I started going, Ron was England manager and John was winning trophies for us.

Does the saggy faced arrogant definitely never done a dodgy deal in his life, text illiterate cսnt explain exactly which type of knife he plunged into bonzo's back.
We still don't know if it was a kitchen knife, switchblade or machete

Does he mention our fans wanting the team to play 'the West Ham way'? If not, I'm not interested.....
