Celebrating five years of Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek: Two modern-day West Ham heroes

By Roshane Thomas
Jarrod Bowen was so determined to conceal his move to West Ham United that he ignored calls and messages from his mum for 24 hours.
Inquisitive texts from close friends were also dismissed. Speculation was rife about the then-Hull City forward making a potential move to the Premier League and Bowen only wanted to tell his inner circle once the deal was completed.
It was five years ago today the 28-year-old joined from Hull for £18million ($22.40m). He has registered 66 goals across 223 appearances, is the face of the club, and has cemented himself as a club legend.
In 2020, West Ham saw off competition from Crystal Palace and Newcastle United to land Bowen. It was the night before deadline day that Hull agreed a deal with the east London side and the following morning, he arrived at their training ground to say his goodbyes and collect his possessions.
Bowen then travelled to Leeds around lunchtime to complete the first part of his medical. Afterwards, he made his way to London to finalise his switch.
It was at 10:50pm, 10 minutes before the deadline, when Bowen signed his five-year contract. He switched on his phone and informed family that the deal was done.
Bowen has always been appreciative to West Ham for giving him a chance. His loyalty led to a seven-year contract extension in 2023, which expires in 2030, the longest deal a player has signed in the club’s 124-year history. Around that time, Liverpool were credited with an interest in Bowen, but he hopes to finish his career at the London Stadium.
Bowen has developed from a Championship player into an England international. He played a key role in West Ham’s recent success, most pertinent being his winner against Fiorentina in the Conference League final in 2023. When ex-manager David Moyes transitioned Bowen into a centre-forward last season, he registered his best goalscoring campaign, with 20 goals across 44 appearances in all competitions. Bowen also equalled Paolo Di Canio’s Premier League record of 16 goals scored by a West Ham player in a single season.
In August, ex-head coach Julen Lopetegui appointed Bowen as captain. He was one of the few players to thank the Spaniard after his dismissal last month. Being vocal has not always been one of Bowen’s strengths, but it is an area in which he continues to grow.
“Being appointed captain is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to Jarrod,” former West Ham goalkeeper David Martin says. “I remember when he joined, he was a bit quiet, but you can tell he’s come out of his shell a lot over the last few months.
“Jarrod sets the standards and that shows in his performances. He’s relishing the role.”
Bowen is in contention to feature in Monday’s game against Chelsea. He has made a speedy recovery after sustaining a fractured foot in last month’s home loss against Liverpool. Potter praised Bowen’s attributes in Thursday’s pre-match press conference.
“We played against him for Hull City when I was at Swansea and we really liked him,” said Potter.
“You could see his quality then. He was incredible at attacking big spaces, could go inside and outside, and had everything you need in a modern wide player. Working with him, you see the quality even more.
“From afar, you think he’s a really good player, but when you work with him every day, you think it even more. He’s been a brilliant signing and servant for the club. Signing another Jarrod Bowen would be fine!”
The January 2020 window is also remembered fondly for Tomas Soucek’s arrival from Slavia Prague. It was Moyes’ first window as manager during his second spell at the helm and the additions of Soucek and Bowen helped West Ham avoid relegation that season. They went on to be integral in West Ham’s transition into becoming a club competing in Europe. On Wednesday, the midfielder celebrated his fifth anniversary.
Soucek joined from the Czech side on a £4m loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season. That £19m option was activated once their Premier League status was secured.
During Soucek’s last six months at Slavia, he hired an English tutor once it became clear a departure was on the cards. West Ham beat Brighton to Soucek’s signature.
The 29-year-old midfielder initially held formal talks with Brighton’s representatives, who flew out to the Czech Republic to meet him. The talks lasted a few days, but once Soucek became aware of West Ham’s interest, he told his representatives it was a “no-brainer” to sign for them.
The midfielder has since scored 34 goals in 217 appearances. The Czech Republic international moved to London with his wife Natalie and young daughter Tereza. At the height of Soucek’s popularity, he and his family had to look for a new apartment due to supporters regularly turning up at his property hoping to get a photo.
“It’s an unbelievable five years,” Soucek tells The Athletic. “I can’t say anything negative. The time has flown by so quickly since the day I joined. It’s been a pleasure to play for this club.
“I have so many great moments on and off the pitch. When I jump into fans, they sometimes call me a legend and that makes me feel warm in my heart. It’s a big honour and to be viewed like that means a lot to me.
“Someone said me and Jarrod joining (in 2020) was one of the best windows in the last few years. We’ve made a big improvement with the club with what we’ve achieved together. I’ve played over 200 games and most of them were with Jarrod.
“As a team, winning (the 2023 Conference League final) in Prague is one of the best moments because it was a dream to win a trophy in my city. But I have other memories, like my first goal against Chelsea (in July 2020). The fans have been supportive and I feel a great connection with them.”
Soucek has drawn comparisons to former Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini. This stemmed from their aerial ability, penchant for scoring headers, and their 6ft 4in (193cm) frames. Soucek has had many defining moments and deputised as captain in Bowen’s absence and has grown in the role.
There was a time when Soucek polarised opinion among the West Ham fanbase due to his gangly frame, but he has won them over with his work rate. There are many examples of Soucek going the extra mile. He gave his jersey to a young fan after the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa. After the chastening 4-1 defeat away to Manchester City, Soucek spoke to fans in the away enclosure. It shows he cares and has a deep connection with the club.
“Tomas’ English wasn’t perfect when he joined, but morally you could tell he was a really good man,” says former goalkeeper Martin. “If you’re going in the trenches, he’s the person you want next to you.
“Tomas and Vladimir (Coufal) would come to the training ground on their days off. We’re doing recovery, none of the starters are supposed to be in, but while we’re out training, Tomas and Vlad would be running laps around the training ground. They just love running and working hard, even on a day when they should be resting. Tomas was averaging almost 12k a game, so to do more running on top of that was impressive.
“When he joined, Vlad and I took him out for a meal in Epping (in Essex). I wanted to help him feel settled because it would’ve been tough for him with no one else speaking Czech. Our bond grew together from that. There was a moment he had a cut eye clearing a set piece. I’ve lost count of the number of times he’s put his body on the line for West Ham. That’s why the fans love him. He gets the club and they get him. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a legend.”
