Detached Retina

Post ray winstone »

Noticed a shadow on the bottom right of my left eye a couple of weeks ago. It steadily got bigger so toodled off to the opticians yesterday only to be told to attend the hospital asap where I spent nearly all day having tests etc then travelled to Moorfields this morning at 7am to have surgery at 11!
Now at home nursing a saw mince pie hoping the procedure has done the trick.
Lesson learnt, any new ‘floaters’ or dark patches go to the opticians, especially if you’re over 55, getting old is a cսnt.

Westside.
I had 4 ops all under local. Duration about 40 minutes each. Its not too bad.....
Eye is clamped open and the pupil fully dilated (the surgeon uses it as a window to see what they're doing. Tiny instruments are introduced into the appropriate area through holes in the eye, like keyhole surgery. Absolutely no pain and the benefits are obvious. Having to administer 3 different drops every few hours for 4 weeks is a bit of pain. Not allowed to fly until the gas bubble disappears.

Yeah, not my favourite memories. I've always been extremely short sighted (-11) and wore contact lenses. As a result my eyes are bigger therefore the retina has to be stretched to fit, making it thinner. With age, I was 65 at the time, the vitreous humor, the jelly, in the rear section of the eye solidifies and shrinks pulling the retina with. It's very normal with aging and the brain adjusts to the sparkley lights that accompany it. Unfortunately my retina, being thinner, ripped. Without immediate surgery blindness is the next step.
I had both lenses replaced about 3 years ago because of cataracts. Best thing that ever happened. Ive now got perfect 20/20 vision and the World is a different place. Its amazing what technology can do.

"You hear of people that have had injections into their eyes.  Fuck that.  Imagine having to watch a needle come towards your eye like that."

A very good friend of mine, was having them every 6 weeks at Morefields, to help stave off macular degeneration. It's working (still has his sight), but it's not a pleasent experience.

Sounds pretty savage that, Splodder.

I don't think I'd even risk getting laser surgery done on them if I ever went blind.

You hear of people that have had injections into their eyes.  Fuck that.  Imagine having to watch a needle come towards your eye like that.

Had this in my left eye 2018. Like you, I had an opaque half moon shadow in the bottom of my eye and horrendous floaters (was like a firework display). I was rushed to the JR in Oxford for surgery that evening. My retina was detached and torn at the top (images are reversed in the eye). Had the jelly removed (it had solidified and had pulled the retina with it), the retina tear was freeze welded back in place and the eye filled with gas to hold it in place. Had to keep head down and sleep on my face for a week so that the gas bubble pressed against the repair. Bloody awful experience. Exactly 1 year later the right eye did the same!

Aloof Cornea, you say.

I’ve  seen that we’re interested in signing him.

Apparently, he can be a bit difficult to get on with off the pitch.

But has a good eye for goal, on it.

Old man had to deal with that a while back involving injections in his eyes to push it back in to place. All the best with it.
