Aguerd New number for Nayef

Post stubbo-admin »

Why bother switching number if you're off? No 5...looks like he's staying then.

Not convinced by his defending but he's good on the ball, decent recovery pace, and means we've got 3 CBs as likely first choice who are very comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Thing is the problem is not our midfields ability to defend, we know they are not too bad at that. The problem is there inability to hold onto the ball and play forward. As they cannot do that for much of the game, we spend too much time defending, which as you say eventually exposes defensive weaknesses.
One thing I like about Aguerd is that he is quick and we need that.

I don't have a big issue with that money, £34million on a starting Premier League centre back is ok. I also think Todibo is a good signing. Aguerd has shown he's worth that money but not suited to us. Kilman was definitely too much but he looked a good player when we first got him and you can understand why we paid more than market value chasing the manager's old captain while he sought to stabilise the ship.

Looking at it now, it isn't a great defensive setup but it isn't the money I'm moaning about, it's the way the defence is always under so much pressure with the midfield they have in front of them that really highlights any weaknesses they have.

The bloke is allergic to England. He can play well in other countries, including last night and out on loan. It's not who he's playing for, it's where he's playing.

This gutless snide cսnt was actually one of the more competent players this morning, which shows you just how bad Kilman is really.

Has anyone said "he'll be like a new signing yet"?

Really will be with his new number, I still remember that superb tackle at St James Park.

best news I’ve heard this summer regarding West Ham tbh.
im tired of us throwing away valuable talent on the cheap because it didn’t fit our “10 defenders, back to the wall, kick and run” philosophy that no one else in Europe plays. Who’d have thought that eh? An alien strategy to most professional players is hard to recruit for!

the whole thing about being a last ditch brick shit house defender is that it’s a sign of a bad setup overall. Dawson did so well for us because we were setup up terribly defensively and he had to bail us out. It’s the reason no one came in for him when he was relegated with West Brom (?) and why we didn’t hear much about him when he left.

With aguerd, Kilman and Todibo we have 3 of the best ball playing defenders in the league on paper. We should be setting up our team to play accordingly.  I do fear though that we don’t get the CM we need to make this all work properly.

I think he struggled under moyes "defend on edge of box for 90 mins and try and get one from a corner"

In a 3 hopefully he'll be much be more comfortable, especially given that he's hopefully got some confidence back after a very good year in Spain

Probably not though

To be fair to Paul Hilton he played twice for us in 1985/86 - in the 4-0 away win at Stamford Bridge and the 2-1 home win against Spurs two days later!

Oh yeah Paul Hilton! Looks like a George or an Ian, definitely not a Paris though

Did the 3 of them ever play together anyone recall?

I've been having a look at a couple of seasons on the 11v11 website: 86/87 and 87/88. The nearest I can get is that Strodder and McQueen started together in the infamous home League cup tie against Barnsley that we lost 2-5. Hilton came on as a sub for McQueen:

Starting line up:
Tom McAlister
Alvin Martin
Gary Strodder
Tommy McQueen
Liam Brady
Paul Ince
Kevin Keen
George Parris
Stewart Robson
Mark Ward
Tony Cottee

Substitutions:
Alan Dickens for George Parris
Paul Hilton for Tommy McQueen
Ooh I did think we probably weren't playing a 3 at the back in those days. Still any combination of 2 from those 3 plus with McAlister as keeper was asking for trouble.

In addition they were not the footballing centre halves that Todibo, Kilman and Aguerd are.
