In his autobiography he said he lent a skint singer the train fare for an audition in London. Singer got the gig and the band became (and still is) one of the biggest rock groups in the world.

He was still at his irascible best up until a few weeks ago when he could literally no longer go on air.. Hugely entertaining and mostly right in his view.
