Speculation over free agent Craig Dawson return | West Ham News

The Craig Dawson of 2023 would be a magnificent addition to West Ham’s defensive ranks just now. The fearless warrior who has ‘nothing but love and respect‘ for West Ham departed after a two and a half year stay at London stadium where his career was reborn:  How the Hammers could do with his steely determination and unyielding defending just now.

If nothing else he could teach Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman what it really means to put your body on the line and give everything for the team.

Dawson’s triumphant return to London Stadium is considered very unlikely, despite reports linking him – now as a free agent – with a rumoured return to act as an unlikely reinforcement at West Ham. Londonworld.com‘s article suggests the 35 year-old might do a job but ignore the reasons Dawson left the club, which  are still valid. (The former Hammer is midlands-based: Dawson’s travelling time to, and from London became prohibitive and impacted upon his family life).

And however rosy tinted and romantic the notion of Craig “Balon D’Orson”s return might seem in view of the Hammers current meek and mild defender options, he’s now 35 and was released by previous club Wolves last summer. As the London World article reports:

“Dawson rejected an offer from Birmingham City to join the Midlands club on a one-year deal during the recent window, with Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham also said to be interested in signing the player. That could suggest that the defender still believes he has the ability to be playing in the Premier League.”

As the Hammers crisis deepens, especially with the news that Konstantinos Mavropanos is out for six weeks-plus, clearly ‘never say never’ but the chances of a 35 year old Dawson donning the claret and blue once more is unlikely in the extreme.

But not impossible….

West Ham player identified as big January signing – Financial effort needed

Club América are in the picture to sign West Ham United’s Guido Rodríguez in the winter market.

That’s according to TV Azteca, who report the Mexican club are considering the midfielder to be their next big signing.

The West Ham player was at Club América between 2017 and 2020. They tried to sign him earlier this year but couldn’t get close to his €4.5m per year salary.

Rodríguez joined the Hammers on a free transfer in August 2024 and featured regularly in the first few months. His playing time reduced under Graham Potter and his successor, Nuno Espírito Santo. He’s been limited to 176 minutes from three matches this season.

The Argentina international’s situation at the Premier League side has caught his former club’s attention. They will have to make a financial effort if they want to secure his services in January.

Rodríguez’s contract expires at the end of this season, with an option for another year. Therefore, Club América have to negotiate with West Ham to find an agreement.

Should they convince the London club, they still have to overcome the salary issue.

Tottenham and West Ham join Barcelona in race for former Manchester United forward

Mason Greenwood’s return to top form at Marseille has made him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards, with Teamtalk reporting that Tottenham, West Ham and Barcelona are all pursuing the 24-year-old.

Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United for £26.5m [$35m] after a loan spell at Getafe where he scored eight goals and registered six assists in 33 league appearances.

His first season in Ligue 1 saw him score 21 goals and provide six assists in 35 games as he finished as joint-top scorer alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele and guiding Marseille to a Champions League place.

This campaign, he has continued his scoring form with eight goals across all competitions, including a four-goal display against Le Havre that drew interest from multiple clubs including Barcelona, who view Greenwood as a dynamic option for Hansi Flick’s attack.

For Tottenham - they want a player who can stretch defenses and provide direct pace in the final third and while West Ham’s pursuit centers on improving their poor attacking record, though convincing Greenwood to return to England remains a major challenge.

Manchester United inserted a 50 percent sell-on clause in his Marseille deal, meaning the Premier League club will benefit financially from any future transfer.
