“He has to play” – Manager sends message to West Ham man as January transfer plans build

By Sean Lunt

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has told Niclas Füllkrug he needs to be playing, with a West Ham United exit looking likely.

Sport 1 cover comments from the Germany manager today. And he’s made his position clear to the West Ham flop ahead of the World Cup next summer.

Füllkrug appears destined to leave West Ham in the January transfer window. His agent opened the door to that prospect last week. He admitted that the move to the London Stadium had been a mistake and an exit would make sense for both parties.

A report from Germany today doubled down on that fact. According to it, West Ham are open to Füllkrug departing. They added that several German sides have shown an interest, as well as one in Italy. A report over the weekend named Füllkrug as a potential option for AC Milan as well.

The striker appears determined to get back on track and, potentially, into Germany’s World Cup squad next summer. If that is to happen, he needs to be playing regularly and, scoring goals.

Nagelsmann isn’t too concerned about the latter, though. He just wants to see the striker playing regularly first.

“We had no discussions about a club change,” he said when asked about the West Ham man.

“I only read the headline from the agent. In the end, it’s the same with Fülle as with everyone else. He has to play. We know what he’s capable of and what he can bring to the team.”

West Ham, Leeds United and Bournemouth make contact for Brazilian winger

By Pedro Reinert

West Ham, Leeds and Bournemouth have shown interest in Flamengo winger Gonzalo Plata, according to Brazilian journalist Fabrício Lopes.

The Ecuadorian’s situation at Flamengo has become tense in recent weeks. The 25-year-old received three red cards – two in the Copa Libertadores, including one in the semi-final against Racing, and another in a 2-2 draw with São Paulo. His latest dismissal upset fans, and his reply to a supporter on social media only added more tension.

Lopes reports that Flamengo’s board feel increasingly frustrated with Plata’s behaviour, especially after he went to a nightclub days before crucial matches. The club now intend to hear offers in the January 2026 transfer window.

West Ham, Leeds United and Bournemouth have already made enquiries. Brazilian side Cruzeiro reportedly have interest as well, but Flamengo prefer not to deal with a domestic rival.

Plata joined Flamengo with big expectations and has a contract until June 2029. A left-footed winger who plays mainly on the right, he stands out for his speed, dribbling and quick changes of direction.

He often cuts inside to shoot or create chances and delivers accurate crosses from wide areas. His versatility allows him to play on both wings or even in a central role.

Despite his recent controversies, Plata remains a talented player who helped Flamengo win the 2024 Copa do Brasil. But as he is suspended for the decisive Libertadores final, his next steps will depend on how the club handle his situation in the coming weeks.
