What results do you get if you ask for a list of Heatherwicks sports stadia?

I think it was Wills that alluded to it earlier, but clubs, one by one, are moving ahead of us in such matters.

We, however, have got "The deal of the century" on our new, rented "home", with "World class transport links", so won't be making any such forward looking motions any time soon.

Heatherwick Studio

A jumped up designer who thinks he's an architect. He designed the Boris bus which cost about £350,000 quid each when any other bus which does the same job is about half the price.

He's also had a hand in the new Google headquarters in King's Cross which are shaping up to be like a huge turd that won't flush. Also involved in the new refurb of Kensington Olympia which looks over complicated and fussy. What a surprise!

Anything he has a hand in ends up having huge maintenance costs beyond anything reasonable.

I put that designer in ChatGPT as I had never heard of the studio or the designer behind it. It come back with some impressive and successful buildings:

Here are five notable UK-based projects by Heatherwick Studio (founded by Thomas Heatherwick), each with a summary and images:1. Coal Drops Yard (London)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
  • A redevelopment of two mid-19th-century railway coal-drop warehouses in the King’s Cross area of London into a retail, dining and public-space destination. (Wikipedia)
  • Heatherwick’s signature “kissing roof” connects the two historic buildings, adding a dynamic steel and glass form above the preserved brick and iron shed structures. (Wikipedia)
  • It opened in October 2018 and has been praised for blending heritage and contemporary design. (Wikipedia)
2. East Beach Café (Littlehampton, West Sussex)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
  • One of Heatherwick Studio’s earlier built works (opened in 2007) — a seaside café with a sculptural, monocoque steel shell inspired by a chunk of washed-up driftwood. (Wikipedia)
  • The building is 40 m long, 7 m wide and 5 m high, with minimal openings on the land-side to protect views from a conservation area, and large sea-facing glazing. (Wikipedia)
  • It received regional design awards for its striking form that complements the seaside context. (Wikipedia)
3. The Rolling Bridge (Paddington Basin, London)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
  • A kinetic pedestrian footbridge designed by Heatherwick Studio in London’s Paddington Basin, which curls up into an octagonal shape to allow water traffic (though actual traffic is limited). (Wikipedia)
  • The structure comprises eight triangular steel segments hinged and moved by hydraulic cylinders to create the curling action. (Wikipedia)
  • Completed in 2004/2005 and serves both functional (bridge) and sculptural roles. (Wikipedia)
4. Olympia London (Kensington, London – redevelopment)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
  • The historic exhibition centre in west London (originally opened 1886) is undergoing a major redevelopment led by Heatherwick Studio, converting it into a mixed-use venue with cultural, retail, hospitality and public space uses. (The Times)
  • The redesign retains much of the heritage while introducing new public areas, rooftop terraces, modern event spaces and pedestrian routes. (The Times)
  • The project is phased and aims to significantly increase the number of events per year and diversify the use of the site. (The Times)
5. Maggie’s Centre Leeds (Leeds)ImageImageImageImageImageImage
  • A charitable building designed by Heatherwick Studio for the Maggie’s Cancer Care Charity in Leeds: a plant-covered supportive environment for cancer patients. (Architectural Digest)
  • The design incorporates 23,000 flowers and 17,000 plants, blending architecture and nature to reflect the idea of change, growth and support. (Architectural Digest)
  • Its layout allows for communal spaces (a kitchen area) and more private “nook” areas, responding to the needs of its users in a subtle way. (Architectural Digest)
If you like, I can pull together a longer list of UK projects by Heatherwick Studio (including smaller and less-well-known works) and provide a map with their locations. Would that be helpful?

St Andrews is a dump and one of my least favourite away games in my least favourite city. The only good thing about in Birmingham is Villa Park and the architecture of the ground created by Archibald Leach.

But as was already said in the thread, it’s for the new polite middle-classes to go to football, not normal people. Birmingham have big ambitions and the American owners of all PL clubs want it to be like the NFL.

IMO we need to be careful. Clubs like this are building capability and momentum...and they've more than got the potential to fly past us with this relics in charge of our Club, and leave us in their wake (as we're seeing with Sunderland this year).
