Change the Laws?

If, like me, you are fed up with the ridiculous amount of holding that now takes place in games, you might enjoy the above article. 

When you've read it, post a suggestion to solve the problem.

I would suggest a change is needed, not just at dead ball and corner kicks, but across the game in general, where holding and pushing is standard and subject to the vagaries of referees' and VAR opinions on the force and duration of the offence. Strangely, at the same time, forceful and legitimate tackles get too readily penalised.

Thi shouldn't require the law to be changed. It just needs the law to be implemented.

The bottom line...if an action would be a foul in the centre circle, it should be a foul in the penalty area. Before the game you make it clear any holding will be penalised, and you'll keep giving penalties and yellow cards until it stops.

Then at the first corner, for every attacker holding a defender you give a yellow card. And if an attacker is being held by a defender you give a penalty.

And you keep doing it until it stops (which won't take long given that level of punishment).

So it's very easy to stamp out if you're of a mind to. 

The reality is they're not of a mind to. Hermansen's struggles at corners are symptomatic of this....yes its exaggerated because he's only 6'1 and of relatively light build, but there are no keepers in the league immune to this.

Right now I'd be telling our players not to hold, and if you get held to go down. Even if that is then enough masse. VAR will ignore a direct 50/50 battle, but can't ignore an offence with a deterministic outcome. Go down regardless the box and force a proper decision. You have to force the decision to get made and make it not ignorable. 6 players pulled to the deck at every corner does just that.

The game's sponsors, via the media & administration (as powerless, toothless intermediaries) would never allow that to happen.

IMO the 'drop to the floor when held' collectively is the best defence against a team like Arsenal.  Trying ot go toe to toe with them in set pieces is pointless, but you tie VAR up in knots looking at every holding incident at every corner, and force them to be reviewed. 

Force the official to make a decision by doing something they can't then ignore.

I've always wondered why refs hold up play to go and warn players while waiting for the corner. Just give a penalty or free kick straight away. They know the fucking rules.

I agree but I think if there are two players pushing and shoving each other before the corner and the ball isn't in play the ref should be able to issue a yeiiow to both players. No penalty or free kick. That might help.

Rice against Chelsea at the weekend. Had both arms wrapped round his player. Knocked the ball onto Raya with his elbow. 

somehow no penalty. If that were us they would have given two and if they missed let them take another.

It’s become a joke, and we’ve borne the brunt of it. Our players get pushed and shoved, yet we’ve given away penalties for pushing back. You could say it is our own fault for not being street wise, and you’ll probably be right. Even so, it makes football boring and shit to watch. Same as taking five minutes for long throws. We may as well go back to the days of Don Howe, Graham Taylor and Dave Bassett.

Its a major part of how leicester won the league.  They kept an eye on it after that but its got to stupid levels now
