Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"But he wasn't really running, more so turning his body, therefore his arm was in a natural position, where else is he meant to put it, the arm wasn't that high or wasn't that extended i.e not totally straight or even that close to it. Then there is proximity, and he was close to the player, although the American on ITV last night said that proximity is now no longer a consideration. Anyway, over to Southgate to bore me some more later no doubt."

He extended his arm to create a bigger blocking target. Can agree to disagree but dont think thats part of a normal running motion. One of the few positives of VAR is that it does pick up things that are blocked from the refs view (only the lino if he was up with play would have had the correct angle) & most players besides the crosser probably didnt have the best view either. Personally thought the Germany headed goal should have stood and the blocking call was a bit soft. That said the only referees Ive really noticed have been the English ones. Everyone else has just got on with it and been pleasingly anonymous

"I thought the hand was in a natural position, are you suppose to put your arms behind your back now, is that like the unwritten law now? The hand/arm wasn't raised high above the shoulder, he was just balancing himself. Regardless, what annoys me is that nobody appealed for it on the pitch or in the crowd, the ref never saw it nor did the commentators, but some jobsworth sitting in a room somewhere miles away decides to take it upon himself to get involved and pretty much ruin the game, it was complete nonsense, and what happened to clear and obvious?"

"I see Vexed has taken a day off campaigning for Reform to post on here. Britains angriest caravan dweller is obviously still salty about choking at Euro 2020. There seems to be a lot of Moyesball being played at this tournament, especially by some of the ‘smaller’ teams who are happy not to have the ball and just defend deep. The likes of Austria, Georgia and Switzerland have been refreshing. Italy were poor from minute 1 of game 1 and never looked like they were comfortable with the set-up. Hopefully Spalletti will pay the price for his poor decisions."

"English scum now ruining this tournament, why the fuck would some wanker in a box somewhere in such a huge game flag that to Oliver? The cսnt needs hanging. I usually love these tournaments but the quality on show has been shocking imo, one thing I've noticed is a lot of long range shooting instead of precise, defence splitting passes, final ball etc, no goals from free kicks, no real individual brilliance, it's been shit. Fuck it off and roll on the PL."

"Thought the Swiss in particular looked very good in todays games! If Southgate can stumble past Slovakia, then they are the next opponent and on the showings so far, can see them sending England packing!"

"Our fucking ref presiding over an absolute disgraceful refereeing and VAR performance tonight. Pulls the player off the pitch for fucking RAIN when Denmark well on top, disallow Denmark goal that was extremely debateably 'offside' and then a minute later awards Germany a pen for a complete non handball. cսnt needs investigating. Diabolical."

"What on earth has happened to all the top International sides? Baggio's Italy, Gullit's Dutch, Platini's France, Matthaeus's Germany, Iniesta and Xavi's Spain, even Gazza's England would all walk this tournament with their eyes closed."

"If we manage to scrape thru past Slovakia, the Swiss are just the type of team that will put us out as its them we would face. Sit deep, disciplined, great on the counter. As the commentators said, they only went out to Spain before on pens and beat France last time out. They will fancy themselves against us for sure."

"Italy remind me of England, slow ponderous build up and no urgency. Players look unsure of their roles and no cutting edge whatsoever. Scamacca looks like the version we had and unsuitable to the way they play. They also lack belief and know they are going out and should actually be 4 down. But in a final they’d still have a decent chance against Southgate’s tactics of fear"
