Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"They may not really have fired yet but by god watching France in comparison to us is night and day. So fluid and dynamic in their system. Saliba steps up and someone drops to cover him, Mbappe drops back and Kante goes forward to take his place. Griezmann just plays in a totally free role. They just all know what they are doing and where to be depending on what someone else does. Compare that to us. So fucking rigid. Centre backs and Rice ordered to stay behind the ball at all times. Wingers just sticking to their wing. It's all so laboured and predictable and archaic and easy to counter in comparison. It's not like we don't have the players to do it too. We still even have the striker who drops deep a lot, but not a single person moves into the space he vacated when he does. It's embarrassing how tactically behind the times we are under Southgate. We don;t pull anyone out of position at all."

Bellingham used to carry himself really well from what I'd seen of him. He's a bit of an up himself cսnt now. Maybe a year at Real has done that to him.

"Also saw the brainless cսnt is under investigation for it. Seen a side of him I don;t like since the game. Arrogance and ego. 'Nice to give a bit back' is it? At the fans who rightly criticised ow poor you have played. Why not actually have some bollocks and hold your hand up and say 'Yes, we haven't played as well as we wanted, and we're doing everything we can to improve.' Typical modern day snide response to gaslight any critic and say THEY are the problem."

"Uefa is investigating a gesture made by England midfielder Jude Bellingham after he scored a late equaliser against Slovakia at Euro 2024 on Sunday. European football's governing body says Bellingham allegedly broke the rules regarding ""the basic rules of decent conduct"". Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time. The Real Madrid player denied it was aimed at England's opponents, saying on social media that it was an inside-joke directed towards some close friends."

He should have taken a punt on someone like Mitchell at Palace over Shaw it would have maybe made it more easier for Guehi to settle in as well as Mitchell. Never know why these types of understandings are never tapped into if you are going on form like Southgate has said he was.

"Southgate got away with fucking murder yesterday, not only himself but the team would have been crucified and rightly so had we gone out. The irony is, with that sort of luck we'll probably win the fucking thing now - then again, I think the winner comes from the Spain v Germany tie"

"Takashi Miike 4:25 Yup, another huge problem. How can he not trust arguably the second best CDM in the world who does it week in week out for his club side? Agree Bellingham is one of his undroppables. (Along with Kane and Saka) So he either must move him to 8 or keep him at 10 and sadly drop Foden, I'd prefer the former as Foden is by far our most creative player and we need him central. The guy is picking names over a coherent team. I don't think he knows any other way. He's got no plan B because he just plays all his favourites every friendly. What is there to learn from just playing Kane etc up front every single international game? It just means that Watkins and Toney have to come in stone cold. Where have we heard ths before? Hello Moyes."

"our biggest problem, for me, is his obsessional need to have someone next to rice. moyes did it this past season with alvarez + soucek/jwp, and for close to four games it hasn't worked. a more advanced player frees up rice, gives support to the spurs mong and gets us up the pitch. the other problem is he needs to sacrifice foden to get in gordon/bowen/eze/palmer, as bellingham is clearly untouchable. to gareth the late goals will be a vindication of his warped tactics, rather than a wake up call to change"

"Not only would I not be surprised if Southgate starts with the same 11, I would be shocked if he didn't. Only injury would forced the deluded idiot to try something / someone new. I actually think this guy is worse than Moyes was."

"Lee Trundle 3:41 Completely agree. So many of our problems stem from having a fucking right footed player playing at left back. It completely paralyses us going forward. I've banged on and on about it like Sir Alf with Soucek as well :) It's just insane taking only an injured Luke Shaw, who clearly isn't going to be fit to start a game in this competition, seen as he didn't even come on in extra time yesterday. What is the obsession with England managers with taking injured players to tournaments? At least you sort of understand if it's a Rooney or a Beckham, but Luke fucking Shaw? He's hardly irrecplaceable. And it's simply criminal to not even take a back up left back. It's not like there aren't any. That's his bigest crime. Bigger than the mess he's made in the attacking positions. We just can't play properly with a right footer there at international level. It's not good enough. Particularly with a bloke who isn't a winger ahead of him on the same flank. We are utterly neutered down the left so everyone knows we aren't attacking there which makes us utterly predictable. Every time Trippier gets the ball he has to turn inside and back because he can't pass it with his left. Nothing goes down the line, and even if he gets up the pitch every attack stops there with him because he has to turn back or cut inside. He can't overlap because he cant cross from there or pass the ball into the box. It's also one of the reasons we can't move the ball quickly at all. The only way foden gets the ball in an advanced position is from a long diagonal. he must be sick to the teeth with it. There isn't even a solution to it. There is no-one else who has any experience playing there. As for the idiot pundits saying to put 'Trent' there. FUCK OFF. What is their obsession with getting him into the side like he's some equivalent of Messi that we need? Saka the little cսnt throwing a strop about it too. That scrote is lucky he seems to be undroppable because he's hardly doing a geat job on the right wing either. He should have been busting a gut to play LB and help the team. Selfish little egotistical cսnt putting himself first. Bowen would have done it with no complaint at all. If Trippier is injured, then it's probaby the only chance we have of salvaging something by placing ANY left footed player there. Are any of the centre backs left footed? If not I'd genuinely look at putting Bowen there. At lest he's fast, disciplined and will run all day up and down the flank and overlap with Foden, and he'll try his heart out. It's clear Saka won't put the team above himself. If I were the manager I'd drop the little shit for the next game for being such a cսnt in an hour of desperte need for the national team. I hope the other players really fucking chewed him out when they got off the pitch but they were probably all too busy slapping each other on the back for somehow fluking a win."

I’d drop two of those goose in favour of some sort of formation that introduces a bit of the PL into it so at least the players have an idea of what they are supposed to be doing.

"I woulnd't be surprised to see Southgate keep the same starting XI against the Swiss. many people said as soon as he announced the squad that the balance just looked wrong - especially the left side on the pitch. and that has been blindingly obvious from the start. what the fuck is the point of taking Shaw if he isn't even fit enough to come off the bench? now it's so obvious he surely has to bite the bullet and drop one of Rice/Mainoo/Foden/Bellingham, but will he?"

"Basic tactical and selection issues remain. Bellinghams individual skill saved Southgate from facing the truth of his tactical ineptitude imo Kane is finished at internatonal level. Too slow and old. Got in the right position I suppose but his presence provides no focal point upfront and severely limits us tk tippy tappy as he has no pace or movement. At yhe very least he has to be substituted. Watkins or false 9, as Bellingham is used to at Madrid would be more effective I reckon? The Foden wide left idea is an abject failure and Belingham either pmays as he does as a false 9 or drops deeper to alliw Foden to oorrate centrally. The holy trinity of Bellers, Foden and Kane is now a self imposed straight jacket. Unlike the Slovaks I expect the well organised, athletic Swiss will expose Southgate’s myopic tactics. But at least we csn have another night on the beer this Saturday :-)"
