Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"I'd expect that most refs appointed by FIFA, UEFA etc for these tournaments are susceptible to suggestions by the tournament organisers to deliver a desired result. That applies equally if not more so to the English refs utilised. Clattenburg was openly corrupt when he officiated. Webb was dodgy. Michael Oliver & Anthony Taylor don't get to officiate games at these tournaments because they are paragons of virtue & are incorruptible. Having an openly dodgy ref isn't necessarily a bad thing. Isn't it better having an openly corrupt ref favouring you than a secretly dodgy one against you? Then there is always a chance that UEFA will tell him it doesn't matter which side wins. UEFA might want a France v England final. I don't know why UEFA would want the Dutch in the final. The Netherlands only got to the 2010 WC final because they couldn't stomach a Uruguayan final appearance after Suarez's handball v Ghana in the qtr final. I reckon England supporters will be grateful the ref was corrupt after the game & the Netherlands fans will be the ones complaining."

"So the ref for tomorrows game has previously been done for match fixing, and Bellingham has previously been fined for calling him out in public. how is that not a conflict of interest? how is this man still allowed to ref a semi final in an international tournament."

"The Dutch will finally get their Euro 96 revenge and hammer us. We haven't looked like scoring from open play. What I would say is we have penalty takers with a strong mentality. Toney, Alexander Arnold, Cole Palmer all very calm and you would back them pretty much all the time. This time next week we will have forgotten about this car crash of a tournament from the spectacle point of view and be focused on signings and the new season."

I'd like to see Toney at our club. Seems decent and confident. Need that level of self belief. Only questions are value and his scoring form since his ban. Big questions actually

The ball doesn’t move & he basically walks up and watches the keeper Very successful for him Ironically if the best two penalty takers … Toney & Palmer … started England wouldn’t need penalties

28 out of 30 pens says his technique works. One of those he slipped as he took it I believe. The man is confident I'll give him that.

I really think that the game plan is to draw every game and win on pens. Our pens were excellent on sat and I think the players have been training hard for this outcome. Could be a master stroke by cuntgate..

"Rightly or wrongly Kane will start, fine, but don't fucking leave him the whole game, if he's not performing take him off on 60. I'd also start Shaw, time to take a slight punt on him, they say he's fit now so start him, it could give us a much better start. As for the outcome, ffs no idea at all, but really hope we do it."

"Southgate seems to have tried to install a Mourinho 'everyone hates us and its us against the world' type feeling in the camp - But I am afraid its just coming across as victim culture with a load of pampered whinging little cunts completely unable to accept any criticism. They're relying on the fans and media now 'riding the wave' which of course, as this is now a semi-final, we will. 1/4 finals and beyond are about winning and getting through. Nothing to do with performance. That plays into Southgate and the teams hands because, quite frankly, they have been fucking dogshit and totally inept, bar the first half against the fondu eating Nazi sympathisers. Instead of a group of so called men sitting in a room and discussing how shit they have been and why and demanding more from each other to change it, they are just moaning at the people moaning at them. And without a proper manager and leader forcing them to accept their shortcomings and protecting them like some sycophantic dad, then they won't accept that. And, for me, add that to how badly they have been playing, its making this current England squad hard to like. But that is now by the by and water under the bridge. I am glad Southgate changed it up - And with the fitness of Shaw now more reliable, it looks like we may finally have that balance on the left that we so desperately need. And with the weed smokers now looking better themselves, they may actually come at us which will allow us some space to play some proper positive aggressive attacking football, rather than the monotonous ""sideways backwards"" style that I would rather peel the skin off my eyes than watch. With Shaw on left, Saka coming to form and Foden operating more centrally I do feel we have more than enough to beat this bang average Dutch side. Southgate's only issue is his favouritest player in the world ever, Kane. Who, honestly, has been so poor its been hardly believable. Had I not witnessed with my own eyes how bad Kane has been i would say it was lies. And not only does Kane being as bad as he has affect our ability to score, it fundamentally affects the whole way we play as he slows us down too a grinding halt. How he has had so many minutes on this form is a joke. And Southgate needs to grow a pair and get him off quicker. Seeing Kane trying to make tackles in an area where Rice, Bellingham, Mainoo and Foden operate is about as frustrating as it gets. And Southgate is now not only coaching like Moyes. He sounds like him. His latest soundbite of ""That's 3 semi finals in 4 tournaments"" is similar to hearing Moyes remind us he won the Europa Conference after we have been beaten out of the FA cup by a rampant Bristol City. In the current time it means nothing. Southgate is a likeable man but missed his calling as a politician. But as likeable as he is, he is average at all he does. If he wins this Euros, whilst we will possibly the most average team to ever win it (bar Greece arguably), he will deserve the upmost respect and kudos. I hope he does. I really do. But my gut tells me we won't. Because, he is a loser. He's proved that. And I fear he will prove it again by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Like Croatia 2018, Italy 2020 and France 2022. I mean, it's what he does."

Southgate like Moyes. will always pay the opposition too much respect . Gakpo is a seriously good player and no doubt van dijk will have kane in his pocket. It genuinely is a 50/50 game . I've little doubt Spain beat France in the other semi ..

I see that the ref appointed is that match fixer that Rice had a go at after our Conference league loss. Bellingham has also called him out in the past.

He's not changing now is he? As far as the FA is concerned it's already a huge success. The cupid stunts. Its going to be a bore fest until they score then we put on some mobile players and we draw.

If he can get Shaw and Palmer on the left and replace Kane I think England can win comfortably ... 2-0 maybe Its hardly a great Dutch team ... DePay & Weghorst. Hardly Van Basten or Van Nistelrooy is it?

"It's hard to have much faith that we are now going to turn up and play well at the SIXTH time of asking, won't help that Kane won't be dropped. Of course we can beat the Dutch, but it won't be pretty and could easily go to pens again."
