Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation
"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

Re: Euro 2024
"I'm not against Potter, smart, fairly likeable bloke who appears to know the modern game, but also seems to have similar traits to Southgate i'e not convinced he's a out and out winner, or strong enough to make the big calls, even looks a bit like him."

Re: Euro 2024
"Manuel 1:44 Tue Jul 16 Cheers. Yes, I do believe the FA have tried similar. But its not really worked. I do also feel that a top manager may also fail. Because as Spain have proven you need a full top to bottom blueprint and most importantly you need consistency and collaboration from top to bottom. But, I do feel, very much like West Ham. If you are going to fail, then you may aswell do it with a bit of flair and excitementa nd enjoy the ride."

Re: Euro 2024
"Let's hope ten Hag continues to do a shit job for Man Utd, as Southgate is likely to get hired by them and he's unlikely to improve them."
Re: Euro 2024
"ED - 100% agree on that mate. Difficult for someone to change their approach drastically, but I do think he’ll regret many of the decisions he made. Better this final the big ones that stand out are; Croatia 2018 WC semi. Scored early, sat back. Lost. Italy 2020 EC final. Scored early, sat back. Lost. Subbing Rice off for Henderson was shameful, and one of the things that lost us a very winnable game. Just the same pattern all the time. Imagine being a player in that environment when you just know he’s going to make a stupid change, or you won’t get into the team if his favourites are anywhere near fit."

Re: Euro 2024
"The fact that he's quit this quickly suggests to me that the criticism really got to him, seems like a bit of a two fingers thing to me. I do like the bloke, but def time for someone else to win nothing."

Re: Euro 2024
"He's obviously a rich bloke and done well for himself in general, but I wonder if he'll lay in bed at night, wondering why the fuck he went to 4 tournaments and didn't think in at least 1 of them he'd just given it a right good go, thrown the kitchen sink at it. Tamely nudging your way through, hoping luck rolls your way, when you have some unreal talent at your disposal, what a fucking waste of opportunity. I certainly hope the penalty takers he choose on that night at Wembley haunts him forever more."
Re: Euro 2024
"Ha - Southgate resignation announced just as I posted that. Good fucking riddance. Hopefully that’s the last of his favourites being forced into the team regardless of fitness (cough, Kane, cough) Saying we had ‘no natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips’ was a sackable offence."
Re: Euro 2024
"A big problem imo is the media asking current England players if they want Southgate to stay. What are they expecting players to respond with? Drives me nuts. A completely pointless question. Pickford ‘really hopes he stays’ as does Rice. Nobody is going to come out and publicly criticise just how shit Southgate’s tactics are, and his overall management of the squad. If they do that and he stays they know they won’t get picked or played. Would love it if a media favourite went off on one."

Re: Euro 2024
Saka is gathering a collection of runners up medals Obviously Palmer should have been on the pitch from the start but it was clear that Yamal & Williams needed players tracking back to help the full backs Bowen (who does that) instead of Saka (who doesnt) was a HARD call that Southgate bottled Spain struggled against the physical Fulkrug in the second half v Germany ... Toney for Kane was another HARD call bottled

Re: Euro 2024
"Russ of the BML 12:25 Tue Jul 16 Appreciate the post and no doubt you make some good points, but overall I don't buy it as to why we can't win anything, I'm afraid. The FA did similar when Sir Trevor was at the helm and they developed ST George's etc, England's u-16's to u-21's have been successful in recent years I believe? We have the players to win now but it's not happening. Are you suggesting under a top coach England would still continue to come up short?"

Re: Euro 2024
"Quite noticeable that STARBOY (cringe) has got away scot free from criticism for not being arsed to track his man, in the 85th minute in a Euro final for his country. Sideshow Bob was sprinting forward, desperate to win the game for his country. Has to be the most overrated player about at the minute, press and pundits weirdly seem absolutely desperate to praise when he's decent, and say fuck all when he's shit. Talent wise, not fit to lace Palmer's boots, the only thing he beats him at is running fast."

Re: Euro 2024
"Manuel 10:33 Tue Jul 16 It does make sense. After their success using tika-taka, the Spanish FA realised that without Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and Alonso, they would need to re-invent themselves. They looked at how football had changed and reset their blueprint. It took some time. And Spain had some lean years on the national scene with some notable miserable nights under Luis Enrique. Luis De La Feunte was coaching youth players at the time and the Spanish FA liked his style of a more pressing, high energy and counter attack style that utilised good wide players. He was employed as U-19 coach and he won the Euros with them. He then went on to win the Euros with the U-21's. He then was made first team coach. But during his time with the youth development and younger sides he has. at some point, coached almost half of the current Spain squad. With notable names such as Oyarzabal, Rodri, Yamal, Williams, Olmo and a few more. It's called taking stock. Then devising a proper plan to develop and adapt so that a time comes when it all falls into place. It's about knowing your people and trusting them. Its collaboration. Everything that the English FA do not do or have. We end up with a manager that going into a major tournament didn't even know his best midfield or formation. It's night and day."

Re: Euro 2024
Also has a squad of 26 so turns up with ONE left back who isnt fit to start the tournament and hasnt played for 4 months Saw Ben Chilwell in a couple of Euro ads ... obviously M&S and NIVEA thought noone would be stupid enough to start the tournament without a left back England have the talent to win the 2026 WC. Suspect the heat in the US & Mexico and the retention of Southgate might stymie that

Re: Euro 2024
"Agree with Eerie * falls off chair* Man for man I dont think Spain have more talent but they were a joy to watch Quick, organised , incisive, great passing combinations & an energy to them. To be honest I think 3-1 or even 4-1 would have been a fairer reflection Southgate lacks the balls to make hard decisions and after 8 years in the job didnt seem to know what his best team was. 'Experimenting' so he said in tournament games and yearning for Kalvin Phillips. ha ha"
