Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

Post Phall Throw »

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"Pep is on 20 mill a year at City, he's hardly going to give that up for 5 million a year with England"

"El Scorchio 8:57 Thu Jul 18 Indeed a caretaker for a year would work, maybe Redknapp or Allardyce, kidding! I think Pep would go for it. The Spain manager isn't going anywhere and I also couldn't see Pep doing an International job for 8 years like Southgate. Maybe Pep until the World Cup with Potter working under him. Would learn a hell of a lot and then a smooth changeover when Pep leaves."

"zico 8:23 100%. Probably the only reason he's not been mentioned so much is that he's under contract and is no way leaving City early. I'd take him over anyone else and I'd even put up with Lampard or Carsley caretaking for a year until his City contract runs out. You'd be insane not to give him the job if he wanted it, regardless of nationality. But I don't think he'd take it. I bet he fancies a go in Serie A first."

"Pep said a few months back he wanted to be an International manager for anyone who would have him. Forget the ""England manager should be English"" thing for now, if Pep wanted it would you want him ahead of a Potter or Howe?"

"I'm starting to feel like it's Potter and it's already a done deal. Given his quotes today seemed very much 'the right thing to say' for someone in waiting and the Beeb running a few little puff pieces on him. However if it were that much of a done deal betting would be suspended, but yeah it feels like it'll be Potter."

"I reckon it’ll be Potter, and I also reckon he’d do well. Would love it, just love it, if Moyes somehow turned up at Newcastle though."

Another vote for Potter. He’s like Southgate but with some tactical nous. England manager should be English.

It will be potter and I'm okay with that as he's a better manager than Southgate ever was at club level. Get him in sharpesh. Last thing we need is Lampard being given it as interim whilst we wait for someone who unrealistic or contracted. Then he scrapes a couple of wins and is given a 3 year deal.

"Not sure on Howe? I know a Geordie bloke here who knows his stuff when it comes to Newcastle, reckons Howe has recently signed a new contract that included a big buyout clause. Not sure if the FA do that type of thing, buyout clauses and all that, but time will tell i suppose."

"Apparently Klopp isn't interested and sticking to his guns that he wants a year out, Guardiola isn't realistic, so suspect Howe is favourite, but who knows what might be going on."

Understand Guardiola is on £20m+ with Southgate on £5m Has to be Howe so that Shearer can advocate for Moyes to replace him at Newcastle

I had great sympathy for any sculptor asked to create a statue of Harold Kane that didn’t make him look like a gormless buffoon As said there is one trophy winning England football captain who has a statue at Wembley The one and only Bobby Moore

"The new manager has to look at other striker options. I watched the Arsenal vs Villa game on the box and Watkins tore up their defence in a way that Kane couldn't have done in his prime. Kane was/is brilliant when he has got a great understanding with players supporting him, Son at Spurs. Just don't think he's on the same wavelength as the likes of Bellingham and Foden, it just didn't look like it was going to click for any prolonged time anyway. the lumping it up to him from deep...FFS, it's like we've not learnt anything in over 50 years. CS - the despite him, not because of him - 100%"

"There was a moment not long after Palmer had equalised when England got a throw-in roughly where Bellingham's equaliser in the 1/4 final had been set up by Walker. You would think it was a no brainer. Hurl it into the box, flick it on and maybe someone will get on the end of it and score. You know, like Bellingham did before. This time Walker chose to throw the ball backwards down the touchline to Stones who then turned around and passed it all the way back to Pickford. From the edge of the penalty area all the way back to our own keeper... Any momentum England had gained went out the window right there... and handed it right back to Spain. I have literally no idea what the pair of them were thinking"
