Woke watch

Post arsene york-hunt »

"There is a very good section on GB news where the ludicrous idiocies of Wokeness are looked at I thought we would should have one for WHO. I'll start with Baptiste on BBC: In Hungary,an ambassador's family are kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and carry out atrocities. At the end of the last episode Baptiste finds out that it is a false flag operation and conveniently, the real culprits are white supremacists who want to stop all immigration. Coronation Street ITV a gay black footballer is stopped by the police, because he is driving an expensive car. He is pushed to the ground during an altercation, and damages his leg threatening his career. Could have been written by Dawn Butler or a BLM activist."

"Fo the Communist 4:43 Thu Jul 29 That stream didn't send itself. Somebody had to decide to select it then send/offer it to potential recipients. Potential right there for bias to creep in and agenda led censorship to rear it's head - which, I assume, is fine & dandy if you don't happen to agree in the first place with the ideas being censored."

"Canada, if I looked at this footage of an officer being dragged out into the crowd and lynched, I'd feel ashamed if I was a Trump supporter like you. I wouldn't be whining about how unfair the media is. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9132649/Footage-reveals-moment-police-officer-dragged-MAGA-mob-leads-away.html But, as Defjam said, it's doubtful whether right-wingers are even capable of shame. Just self-pity and whining, as this thread illustrates."

"Irons. Point is, those stories about the Capitol police didn't appear because a news organisation decided to run a story and seek the individuals out for comment. The story ran because it was part of an ongoing process that was conveniently streamed right into their newsrooms. Easy copy that was soon displaced by the next thing that landed in their lap. Enjoy the game."

"Fo the Communist 3:59 Thu Jul 29 I do obviously get less objective when I talk about it but I hope I have never said I believe that hers is a news story because that would be the story for someone somewhere every single day. The stories I have compared it to were I think...comparable and some more local. There have been various inquiries into those, the police's side was not given the same coverage. And again deaths should change the equation if only for the legitimate reason that the dead cannot tell their own story like these officers can. Reason I explicitly avoided the comparison. My point is that when you have a clash of police and an ""other"" the police coverage shift depending on the politics of the other. The BLM protests were ""international, historic and unprecedented"" but I did not see a lot of coverage of the well-being of officers in the months after the fact. That is not good journalism and you can not shuffle it under the rug, as economic. In my opinion. Cheers, mate. Thanks again. I need to get some work done, I want watch a football game at 3:00am and need to do some catch up for tomorrow. Speak to you later."

What is the required waiting time before an item is deemed front page? And is it really about waiting time at all?

"Irons. The personal emotions felt by your sister and colleagues were no doubt comparable to those felt by officers caught up in the Capitol riots. (I think it is frowned upon to refer to it as 'her truth' but that's another story). The simple difference is that her experiences were not part of an international, historic and unprecedented event and as such - have lesser news value. I have explained the reasons for this. As also explained earlier - the recent headlines are generated because they were reports of a day's hearing into the riots which centred on the experiences of the officers there. What other coverage did you expect? There was also plentiful coverage of the murder of Keith Palmer in the Westminster attack by the way But I agree with what (I think) you say - in the transient world of 24 hour news, stories are often 'front page' merely by dint of being the biggest thing that hour. Never before has front page news been so ephemeral."

"Fo the Communist 2:58 Thu Jul 29 I would like it to be loud coverage, it was an unacceptable act. But I would also like people to understand that my sister in being a rural RCMP officer, a sheriff and a prisoner transfer officer experienced many of the same things these officers described and feared for her life. The racial or in her case sexist abuse, the stinking of chemical/fecal matter coming back etc. I did not hear those realties being given voice in Westminster attack, nor the protests/riots than have happen in the UK recently. When that is not the case, I do see a political motive. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/c37r4jqnn21t/us-capitol-riots This what I am talking about as far as front page news - ie. the equivalent of something that will be wrapping fish the next day. A couple of those stories from Tuesday/Wednesday have decent headlines - not the others, if you are not going to use similar headlines about police for other incidents. Some of that is just bad/clickbait/economic, what I called sleazy before, some of it is political. I think it belies a bias to consistently downplay the political part."

"Irons. I could talk for hours on why there is so much bad (and deteriorating by the year) journalism. The biggest factor - by far - is economics rather than political agendas. Yes I think that injuries (and not just fatal ones) to police officers is given prominence in the UK media. Funnily enough the current lead story on my local newspaper's website is about a bloke spitting in the face of a police officer. That would not be a front page story if any old Tom Dick or Harry has received a faceful of saliva. As a reporter I would clearly make play of the fact a policeman had been injured. Moreover the courts and politicians do too. Your point seems to be that the coverage given to the US police caught up in the Capitol riots is excessive. For at least three reasons I have given, I don't see this that is unwarranted, unusual or surprising. And by 'front page articles' do you mean appearing as such on the website for a few hours (genuine question)?"

"Darby_ 2:28 Thu Jul 29 Everyone here knows I ""whine"" a lot more about poor journalism than I have ever ""whined"" for Trump. When you make silly generalizations like that people see the value of your posts the same way they can when make factual errors. Eg. The representatives being shot in Congress certainly happened in my mom's lifetime. And certainly within my great aunt's lifetime, who is from the States. The act deserve a whole lot of attention. The partisan hearings maybe less. But notice my original comment about tone of the police reporting, again deserves consistent and objective and loud attention. I learned that from my sister."

Fo the Communist 2:21 Thu Jul 29 Where did I say you were defending it? It was a poor argument - bad journalism happens because...bad journalism. You don't have hold that view for it to be poor. But let's cut the dance around - Police have been injured in a number of protests/riots (depending on who you ask) in - this - country in the relatively recent past. Are there front page articles about the affect on officers' involved? Do you (not what poor journalism does) believe that is correct practise? Do you believe there is any political motive for that trend?

"Canada, we all know perfectly well why you're crying about the subject. Because it was your scumbag hero who tried to overturn the voters' will, and incited his thugs to try to do it by storming Congress and stopping the election count. That, as far as I'm aware has never happened before in the US. It certainly hasn't happened in anyone's lifetime. That's why it's getting so much attention. Everyone here knows that, and yet you can't stop your pathetic whining."

"Irons You said I was defending bad journalism. This was not what I was doing at all. You therefore introduced a false narrative to detract from the real point being made. That is, by anyone's definition, a straw man. Auntie. Funnily enough, Star Trek was 'woke' half a century before 'woke' was invented. Didn't it have the first inter-racial TV kiss, overtly tackle subjects of race and prejudice and have a crew full of commies when US mainstream was still fearful of Reds under the bed?"

"Darby_ 2:10 Thu Jul 29 Honestly mate, I missed it the first time round, until Block pointed it out and as you can see I was discussing bad journalism with someone else. I did have to study these things in school, for good or bad. But, in the end you were wrong again about a historical fact And will continue to dance around the fact that this about consistency in the treatment of police in the media. And not about a political axe you want to grind with a sparse knowledge of the facts."

"Fo the Communist 1:27 Thu Jul 29 You are confusing or trying to confuse thing a bit First, we are not talking about killing of police officers - explicitly - we are talking about those that survived and feared for their lives. Of course, a great deal of coverage changes when someone dies. I did not mention the name of the soldier/officer killed in Ottawa and Westminster. So you have reached back 35 years to things that at best clouds this specific argument. ""Well no, I'm not defending it. I'm merely explaining what forces - as unwelcome as they may be - influence news coverage. Classic straw man from you there, mate."" I am arguing against bad journalism with coverage comparisons and you respond with ""but it's just bad journalism?"" Your point is a bad one without me having to say you believed it. Who taught you the meaning of straw man? For it to be decent journalism - if the officers feeling are relevant front page news now, then they should have been on the front page in a number of other incidents."

"Irons The headline arose because the House Select Committee was - during that day's hearing - receiving testimony from police officers. Of course the headline followed the evidence being heard that day. ""Another would be perpetuation of a narrative."" Are you really trying to argue a point with bad journalism again? Well no, I'm not defending it. I'm merely explaining what forces - as unwelcome as they may be - influence news coverage. Classic straw man from you there, mate. And I didn't 'reach back' - I am saying that the killing of police officers stays in the memory of people - and the news - in this country."

"Fo the Communist 1:03 Thu Jul 29 The point and the headline was about an officer, rightfully, fearing for his life. If the political story was the story, that should have been the headline. Not the officer's well-being. ""Another would be perpetuation of a narrative."" Are you really trying to argue a point with bad journalism again? And did you really need to reach back at least 35 years to find reverend police officers. I think you might be be making a bit of my point. Don't remember his name but I can think of the Thames Valley one, off the top of my head, dragged behind a vehicle recently. But again, he is remembered because we don't like those who did it?"
