"Far Cough 8:12 Tue Jun 30 Saw a thing once where they compare modern records where the drummer has played to a perfect click track, (or even drum tracks played by a computer), against older records where the real drummer set the time with no external click. Interesting that even drummers noted for their precision (like Bonham) tended to speed up/slow down sometimes imperceptively but visible on a computer trace of it. Many prefer this as it is more human, wheras the click/computer track sometimes leads to precision without the feel. Much pro live music is played to a click now as lights, videos, backing tracks etc will all be synced with it."

Far Cough 8:12 Tue Jun 30 A lot of metal drummers are staggering at the human metronome thing. Gene Hoglan is the best at it - he is not called the Atomic clock for nothing and it is fucking impressive. I am good at it too. Recorded with a couple of bands where I had to to play stacatto bang in time and it sounded like it had been sampled. Much prefer playing around the beat as it creates more tension. John Bonham was brilliant at it playing ever so slightly behind it. Bootsy Collins too - bang on the one but the rest is for fun.

"zebthecat 12:22 Tue Jun 30 I played with a drummer for a while who was the son of a successful pro, but unfortunately had inherited none of his Dad's talent. The funny thing was he would come back in to the beat out of time after a roll, but always out by the same amount. In the end the band tuned into this and would also come back in out of time, but all together. I was chatting to another guitarist who had played with him separately, and he said his other band did exactly the same thing!"

"Us bass players are underrated. My two faves are Lemmy and Bootsy Collins for abviously different reasons. I have mostly played in Metal, Prog, Psych and Rock bands but have also played Funk and Reggae. The best fun I had actually playing was in a Reggae band where I depped for a few gigs as their bass player went back to Jamaica for a wedding and I happened to working on a building site at the time with the guitarist and music came up inc conversation. The only times where I was the only white guy in the rooom. It was such fun just sticking with the groove and I really clicked with the drummer (one of only four who I did - you'd be amazed how many drummers have absolutely no sense of groove at all)."
