"Somewhat against my will, I went to the second day of the Rewind North festival on Sunday. I found out in the queue to get in that top of the bill Squeeze had pulled out due to Glenn Tillbrooks's illness and second on the bill Marc Almond Almond had been replaced by Heaven 17 for the same reason. Squeeze, love them as I do, tend to go through the motions when playing live these days, so I wasn't much bothered. Difford has always been a miserable bastard and Tillbrook has his bad days and his not so bad days. They were replaced by the Boomtown Rats. I was intrigued to see how a bunch of 70 something ex-punks would perform. The replacement for the entirely wonderful Mr Almond was Heaven 17. Heaven 17 I find to be the very dullest of all those 80s electro bands, so I was fairly pissed off. Rewind isn't really like a proper festival. There are more near-geriatrics sitting in a fishing chair than you can shake a stick at. Of those that are standing, many are near geriatric ladies in fancy dress showing distressing amounts of flesh. Some of the outfits badly needed an iron, but not as much as some of the flesh did. Also, there are a depressingly large amount of fruit-based drinks being consumed, often by the men. So, China Crisis were first up, obviously mightily pissed-off to have been re-jigged to open the bill in the torrential rain. They were OK. I quite enjoyed the three hits. The lead singer is a very sweary gay scouser. Who knew? Him and the guitarist were the only originals. To be fair, I think the band was just them and hired hands anyway. The Farm came on a did a couple of hits. The three original blokes were wearing the same jackets they used to all those years ago and all they seem to have turned out to be jolly nice chaps in the end. I quite enjoyed them. Scouse Madchester. Nice enough. Next up Big Country. Bruce Watson is very, very sweary. Mark Brzezicki is still on drums and still a wonderful drummer. I love Big Country. They played all the hits, I thoroughly enjoyed and was singly along as loud as any OAP can be expected to. I missed Tony Butler and, obviously, the late Stuart Adamson. I loved it - it was far too rock and roll for most of the crowd who looked baffled for most of the set. Some bloke that used to be the guitarist in Earth, Wind and Fire was up next doing a bunch of Earth, Wind and Fire songs with a huge band. The crowd loved it. The sound was fucking dire. Nobody except me noticed or cared. Now we come to the funny bit. In close order, none of them with their own band, came the also rans. The bloke who was the main bloke out of Red Box came on with his daughter and did his hit and a couple of others. He was very polite and humble, thanked the band properly and I can't say I minded him at all. Then a bloke from Brother Beyond (I had to look them up) came on and did his solo act comprising the Brother Beyond one and something that was a minor hit in France. He thinks his shit don't smell. A word to the wise - it does. He didn't thank the band. Then poor old Sonia was wheeled out, she looks like an emaciated 75 year old with false tits and about a million pounds worth of cut-price cosmetic surgery. I don't think she has any buttocks at all. Anyway she shreiked like a demented banshee for a bit, mumbled something about Eurovision and fucked off quite quickly. Again, the sound was awful, though I suspect that might have been a mercy. The crowd, or at least the female scousers, cheered sympathetically and waved their glasses of wine. Lastly in this section were Go West. They were really quite good. They still comprise the two original main men, they obviously enjoyed themselves and thanked the band properly. The crowd liked them. They had more hits than I'd remembered. I enjoyed them a lot. Well played chaps. A miserable bloke then came on a sat behind a keyboard of some sort. Then a gay bloke came out and started singing. There were also three birds in attendance whose singing was actually worse than Sonia's. I eventually worked out it was Heaven 17. In what was a first for me, Glenn Gregory actually apologised for the quality of the bimbos' singing. He put it down to festival nerves but I suspect they are just shit. Martin Ware didn't say anything. He looked pissed-off to be there. The other one got out years ago. Mercifully they fucked off after three songs. The sound was awful. Nobody clapped. So much for Marc Almond's replacements. Cunts. Nik Kershaw was next. I've seen him before and was pleasantly surprised then. He's got a lot more hits than you remember, and actually had the confidence to do Yazoo's Only You just because he likes it. He finished off with My One and Only, complimenting Chesney Hawkes and thanking him for the royalties. Last up were the Rats. Geldof is 71 and is in incredible nick. He started off by mocking the crowd for sitting in the pouring rain for most of the afternoon while he and the band were sunning themselves in the south of France. A few idiots in the crowd clapped. 'No, he said, 'your supposed to tell us to fuck off', and straight into Trash Glam Baby. They've still got it. Geldof can't sing too well, but the drummer Simon Crowe helped him out as he always did. Pete Briquette is still there but sadly Garry Roberts passed away last year. The band was great. The sound was great. Bob was great. Many of the crowd left to beat the traffic. It was far, far too rock and roll for them. Those that stayed enjoyed them immensely - I know I did. Rewind is a particularly money-grabbing festival. My main take on how it is organised is that the security at the gate is only concerned with confiscating any and all forms of food or drink. They quite obviously couldn't get a shit if someone got in and ran amok with a machete or semi-automatic rifle as long as nobody manage to smuggle in a can of warm cider or a pork pie. The compere was Doctor out of Doctor and the Medics. He is a complete cսnt."
